I've been on the fence about writing this review as I see the owner/manager replies to bad reviews…read moreand I truly don't want to engage him, but want others to know the poor experience we had to help others. As was the case with countless others, I had a November 2020 wedding scheduled that was impacted by the pandemic lockdown. That's not anyone's fault. However. The client service from the manager/owner John is abhorrent. (The event coordinators are kind and very responsive.) We'd made deposits, and were scheduled to make another -- literally, I had optimistically send out save the dates -- but the city still had restrictions on how many people could gather in the space. My contract was for 130 people. When I reached out to Arts Ballroom to discuss the way forward, thinking that they MUST have some kind of action plan about how they were going to move forward with existing contracts and triage, there was nothing. No plan. No mitigation strategy. No flexibility to bump the date. Just an expectation of payment for my contracted amount. We asked to move the date to 2021. John told us no, because our Nov. 2020 date would be considered lost revenue because it's a date he could've sold to someone else. This was illogical -- if the city wouldn't let us gather in 2020, he wouldn't have been able to sell the date to ANYONE. That was the whole point -- we were trying to get ahead of what was very obviously inevitable: we weren't going to be able to host anything in 2020, and rather than proceed as planned -- spending all kinds of money on vendors and invitations, only for Arts Ballroom to call us THIRTY DAYS BEFORE to reschedule (yes, they were only alerting to reschedule 30 days out) we wanted to be proactive and get ahead of it. For those keeping score at home: you send wedding invitations 6 to 8 weeks out. Make it make sense. We even offered extra money to move the date for for peace of mind -- our primary concern was exposure to people who were at risk -- no dice. No dice and no action plan. But he did ask us if we wanted to just buy a new 2021 date! Ha. He then cockily talked through *his* obligations to the bank which -- I'm sorry, but I'm a paying customer. His business dealings are not my business--apply for small business pandemic support or something. His responsibility is to his customers, but I guess not. It's also telling that his business had no cash reserves so he had to hold folks' feet to the fire this way. Needless to say, we canceled and lost a significant deposit. In hindsight, it was a small price to pay to not have to work with his clueless arrogance. (He was very confident, despite saying he didn't watch the news, that the pandemic would clear up by our date.) I was walking a dog with a friend this weekend, and happened in front of the venue where I saw someone casually smoking crack on the corner across the street. I chuckled and took it as a sign.

I stumbled across them during a YouTube deep-dive of local wedding bands and immediately told my now-husband I'd found the right band. We reached out in Sept 2021 and asked if there was any opportunity to see them live before we booked. They didn't have any upcoming live shows at the time but immediately invited us to stop by one of their rehearsals, where we were greeted warmly from the moment we arrived. They played a few songs by our request, though within 30 seconds we confirmed we were sold, and then were friendly enough to all sit and get to know us for a bit. They met with us again closer to our wedding date to confirm all of our song choices for the big moments, even enthusiastically agreeing to create a surprise mash-up of my dad's song choice and a childhood favorite of ours for our father-daughter dance. On our actual wedding day, they were flawless from beginning to end. Their instrumental version of "Helpless" from Hamilton for my walk down the aisle instantly triggered tears. Our first dance and dance songs were perfect. Our dance floor was packed all evening, including friends and family who don't typically gravitate toward the dance floor, and we had an absolute blast. MLX even surprised us by bringing one of their singers who'd actually left the group since we'd booked because they remembered we'd felt drawn to him (though their new singer, James, is awesome, too!). You can tell that MLX really loves what they do and were genuinely invested in making sure our wedding was perfect. We can only hope that one of our friends hires Modern Luxe for their own wedding someday. Until then, we will definitely be seeking them out at one of their public shows so we can relive our perfect night over and over.

For those who frequent the live local cover band nightlife scene like hubs and I had so much fun…read moredoing before kiddos, you may remember a band called Lima Bean Riot. They have somewhat recently reinvented themselves as "Modern Luxe" and play weddings now too! They still kick tush!!! We recently attended a wedding and these guys absolutely rocked it!! They played a fantastic mix of genres and combined them all so seamlessly. They had the crowd dancing and singing along from beginning to end. They covered all the classics you expect to hear at a wedding and some you would never think to, but thought were an awesome add-in. Each member of the band who came from a variety of different musical backgrounds offered something unique to the mix and together, they were absolute perfect and well-rounded. The band acknowledged the couple often and very well. They gave a warmth to the couple as if they weren't just another gig. They even learned the first dance song which the bride said she loved more than the original. The bride also said that she was going to go with a DJ, but once she saw Modern Luxe at a bar one night in Philly, she was sold. My small critique has nothing to do with the music so I'll keep with my 5 star rating they deserve based on performance. The tiny thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way was the beautiful, personable lead singer's flip flops which she wound up changing into well into the night. I totally get it. Heels suck. There's no getting around it. Dancing and performing in them for hours blows. I've done it. I too was in the same industry for years and years and wore heels the entire night. I feel her pain, I really, really do. I just think it looked very unprofessional for a wedding, even a more casual summer barn wedding. There could've been a better, more appropriate shoe choice in my opinion. I'm not one for flip flops anywhere other than the beach or on the way to yoga. Certainly not with a dress and definitely not to your place of work or a wedding. A nice sandal if she wanted to keep with a summer open toe, a ballet flat or flat ankle bootie to go with the whole rocker chick thing. I mention this because I'm not the only one who noticed. The bride gave a lot of thought into every perfect elegant detail of her special night and I personally thought it was a tad disrespectful. I know this may sound harsh and silly, but I notice these things and apparently wasn't the only one. Small, tiny fixable flaw however. I've seen other photos of her performing and she looks amazing and dressed up, head to toe so I'm not sure what the deal was with this night.... I would absolutely hire these guys without thinking twice and I'm suuuuuuuper picky about bands. If you're in the market for a band for your wedding which I personally think is the way to go and makes a world of a difference, check these guys out! They still play the bar scene so seeing them live before booking or just for fun is easy. Check their Insta or FB for upcoming gigs!

When I first set off upon the long quest that is wedding planning I knew that picking a…read morephotographer would be one of our most important decisions; after all, you're spending a small fortune, gathering all your favorite people together, and you better have something tangible to look back on once the details have faded from memory. Having the opportunity to laugh hysterically at so many cheesy engagement and wedding photos on Facebook during the preceding years I was determined that under no circumstances would I ever hire someone who would pose us in a wheat field and have us staring into each others eyes... or something like that... Along comes Ian, we were struck by the fun, exuberance, tenderness, and straight up real moments and feelings that we saw captured through his lens. We met over coffee at Ultimo, got to know each other a little, and hit it off really quick. He is, in a nutshell, a charming, laid back dude with great taste that works really damn hard- what more could you want? He sent a contract which we signed and returned promptly. (Also of note is that he is part of a wedding services collective worth checking out called "Rabbit Rabbit Crew" which is a curated group of small businesses for every aspect of your perfectly styled wedding) On our big day, Ian showed up right on time to the loft where my girls and I were getting ready as per a timeline/shot list that he had us send to him before the day so that everything would run smoothly. He was completely at ease moving around the space, shooting stealthily and casually chatting, but not at all being intrusive. As we moved on to the church and then the reception site he was right there capturing everything and even stopped off with us at a coffeeshop to shoot some awesome photos of us two in our natural habitat. The photos we got back were so lovely and perfectly captured the spirit of the day- I really couldn't have higher praise for his work. For the most part the pictures were documentary in style with just enough posed shots and each and every picture was thoughtful. Thanks so much Ian for being such an integral part of a very special day. I couldn't recommend this guy enough! Want proof? Check our pics out at: http://www.vivalovephoto.com/cassie-and-drew/

Seeing Ian go above and beyond for us set the stage for his professional services throughout the rest of the day. His assistant DJ did an excellent job capturing the guys bridal party and their personalities. Fun experiences with good hearted people makes for amazing photos. Ian and DJ were so kind and perceptive. Hire them - they care about what they are doing! We have received many compliments.
