Is it a bar? Is it a cafe? I can't decide. Equally, I'm not that fussed, it works. As a carnivore, I like my meat. Which is the one thing not on offer on this menu. But what a tasty menu it is: fresh soups, sweet chilli spring rolls, lentil and porcini lasagne, haggis koftas - or rummage the tapas menu (but you prob won't want to share it). Stereo is hidden down a lane, and its inside walls and pillars are covered in gig posters - many for its own venue, or for decent indie bands across the city. I tend to avoid the beers on draught and opt for the selection of Williams Brothers bottles in the fridge - but I find you always have to specifically ask for a glass (do I look like a bottle-swilling kinda guy?). Downstairs is a cavernous venue space. I've danced here, seen bands here, had piety recited. Check out what's happening - there's prob a poster upstairs telling all about it. A great wee city centre bar that has the exact opposite feel of a city centre bar! I love Stereo inside because it's the exact kinda place anyone could go and fit in...in the sense that they don't fit in. Stereo mostly houses the bohemians of Glasgow, who come here to listen to bands of various types and drink good beer (William Brothers!). It's a bit pretentious, but the people are absolutely lovely and the staff know exactly what they're talking about. I do love a wee afternoon at Stereo. Very well hidden, it's one of Glasgow's best kept secrets - kept secret from the right people, at least. It's hidden away on a lane that's one street up from George Street, just around the corner from Central Station. I have a theory that it's like the island in Pirates of the Caribbean - it can only be found by those who already know where it is! I haven't experienced it as a gig venue or club as yet, but it's a pub and restaurant that I truly love to visit. Very wooden and rustic, the servery is a cross between a bar and a delicatessen's display. The food they serve here is vegan, as it's owned by the same lovely folk as Mono and The 78. They have a small selection of unusual beers, and everything is made with fresh ingredients. You can't argue with that! I absolutely love the sweet potato fries here, I cannot get enough. The choices are endless and there are so many more dishes that I can't wait to try here. Stereo is an uber hip / arty bar and music venue located in the not so hip area around Central Station. If you are brave enough to venture down the rather dark and dingy Renfield Lane you will be rewarded by finding this friendly pub serving a decent selection of beers and offering home cooked vegan grub. As Stereo is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the City Centre this is usually a great place to get away from it all and enjoy a relaxing drink with friends. My favourite thing about Stereo is the excellent gig space downstairs. The sound system is great and these guys seem to put on some of the best indie and underground acts around. It would almost be perfect but for the rather unfortunate structural columns in the middle of the room which can hinder views. When I'm in this area of town, Stereo will always be near the top of my list of places to grab a drink. read more

This is my review for the club/venue side of things, I'll have to go back and try the food as I've not spent any time upstairs in absolute yonks! Stereo's downstairs area is one of those really versatile spaces. I've been to see indie gigs, african drumming ensembles, and disco/house dj's all in the same venue, and the space really does transform depending on what you're going to see. I think it's probably best suited as an intimate gig space, but it can be a really fun place to boogie the night away if they bring in the strobes and the smoke machine. Drinks aren't too pricey but they're not cheap as chips either, and the loos are nothing to rave about (but if you even expect loo roll in the toilet's of a Glasgow club, you're really need to lower your expectations!) Nights out at stereo are all about the friends you come along with. Their soundsystem isn't great and they put on lots of startup acts so nights can be verrryyy hit and miss. I've definitely had bad experiences in stereo before, but I suppose one can always escape upstairs to a table for a drink if the basement isn't looking promising. read more

Another Vegan joint from the same folks who do Mono. For me though, it is first and foremost, a great music venue. Saw some great alternative stuff in here like Part Chimp. The staff are pretty cool and it's a lively enough place at nighttime to attract me there from time to time even without a gig on. The toilets, as pointed out, are an issue. And not necessarily a bad one. Just different. Men and women walk in the same door with cubicles lining the right hand side and sinks and mirrors on the left. No urinals! It's funny at first, but you get used to it. I don't go here enough actually. read more

I love Stereo and have been here a bunch of times. Most recently I booked a table of 11 for my birthday. The table was set out with menus, cutlery and glasses and looked lovely. The staff were absolutely brilliant ensuring that all of us were happy and had everything we wanted. As I was feeling greedy I ordered quite a selection of food (for sharing, I promise). I ordered fries, spring rolls and garlic bread that I put in the middle which were so good. For my main I had the crispy gnocchi with the cashew and cauliflower cheese. It was massive and tasted great. I also shared a bottle of red wine and prosecco. I have also eaten here in much smaller groups and the level of service was still the same. Things That Popped Into My Head Whilst In Stereo; 'What is that gorgeous food smell?! Non-meat type substances can't smell this delicious...' 'Oh look an empty table!...wait no it isn't.' 'Super cute Tom Thumb-sized barmen? Mm-hmm.' 'Oh my god is that Sean Lennon?!' 'I'd sure like to sit down now.' 'Hipster or hobo, I wonder...' I like Stereo. It's a minute away from Glasgow Central but hidden *just* enough. Had plenty of drinks in here but never lingered for very long. No reason; I just like to park my bum while I sip my wine and it's always been a tadge on the busy side. I love the space downstairs. Dark, cosy, cave-like; what I look for in a great gig space. High ceilings and tasteful bare brickwork but still with a nice compact feel to it. My only experience of the food in Stereo stretches to a bowl of sub par handcut chips. In all honesty they were a bit of a let down. Nobody likes a flaccid chip, lads. I'll make it my mission to nip in for lunch some day, so they've got a chance to redeem themselves. I'm a fan. Stereo has the dingy appearance of a dive bar, but you know from the offset that it is in fact super cool and a classy cut of Glasgow's music bar culture. Selling vegan food (which I've never tried but my friend swears by...since he is vegan obviously), its upstairs area is usually busy with flocks of music loving young dudes. You will be lucky to get a seat during supper time, so if anything that gives you an indication of its popularity. Downstairs, the party is getting started with all the gigs. As a gig venue the acoustics are good. It stretches back a fair deal and some lesser known but nevertheless popular bands play here. Getting a ticket to see an obscure band play a Stereo gig is a much envied affair. It's suitably dark, stark and littered with beer tumblers and gig flyers. Just what I and many others want from a gig venue! It's a hipster hangout but it's not exclusive, flashy or pretentious. I guess because it's cool it's a magnet for some people who are all about the hipster image but it's a laid back and thoroughly awesome place to get a drink from their varied bar before nodding your head appreciatively to music downstairs. read more

I've never actually ventured into the café for eats, although I hear good things, I've only ever experienced Stereo as a gig venue. Have been here twice for gigs now and will be venturing back in just a week or so and I'm excited already. The layout can be a wee bit confusing, loads of stairs/doors but when you get into the basement space where the bands play it's ruddy brilliant. It's fairly small, it's VERY loud but it ticks all the gig boxes for me. The bass punches you in the chest and you can feel the static from the amps riffling your hair. Everyone always seems to look like they're having the time of their life as well. Be warned though, if you are the type of person who overheats quickly, this might not be for you. As its fairly wee, when it's packed with people in to see a band it's much like I imagine sunbathing in the sahara would feel like. My only issue is that you can only buy one drink per wristband at a time. Now as rules go I understand the logic etc here but it did mean we had to share a drink because I couldn't get one for my friend as well. Not a huge problem but it's a bit inconvenient. read more

It's a tough call as Glasgow is so good for vegan food but Stereo probably has my favourite menu. The buffalo cauliflower, cashew cheese sauce, and chips are among my favourites, they almost always have a special dessert that's amazing (a cheesecake of generous portion or a cookie sandwich), and service is usually pretty quick and better than it has been in the past. I would definitely advise booking as it can get really busy in the evenings. The soup & sandwich deal is great value if you're trying not to go too OTT with your order. The only negative is when bands are on downstairs the floor vibrates but this is rarely a problem during the day. read more

I really like Stereo, and for me only Mono beats it. Now if this was audio I was harping on about I would clearly be well off base. Ok ok I'm sorry excess crap musical punnery must end, time for my review: I've been here twice, once on a date and once meeting an old friend. On both occasions the food was lovely, the drinks nice and the quiet ambience perfectly matched to the chilled conversation I was engaged in. I love the long bench seating at the window looking onto the somewhat dingy wheelie bin strewn lane outside. Actually the first time I walked into that lane I thought I had the wrong lane/street! The staff have always been really nice, you can tell they enjoy working behind the bar there. It is always better when the staff take pride in their place of work, and this is certainly the case with the enthusiastic and vibrant staff in Stereo. I thoroughly recommend it here, and it's another of my must visit places each time I come to Glasgow. Actually as a vegan I am even tempted to move to Glasgow just because of the availability of eating out: something I'm deprived of in the rural Aberdeenshire town I abide in. read more

When I finish work early and fancy reading with a glass of wine this is my go to place. Actually, if I'm meeting friends, fancy a bite to eat...OK you get the picture. It can seem a tad hipster at first but then you'll notice a wide variety of people in it enjoying the vegan food. Downstairs is a large area great for seeing bands and I've even watched a movie in there. please be aware that the toilets on the ground floor are unisex. When you go in the signs on the doors will let you know if there's a toilet or urinal behind it. It also has disabled access so everyone can enjoy this (slightly) hidden gem. Walking along the cobbled lane might seem a bit risqué but it's actually quite safe and i do recommend that you look up and you'll notice how beautiful the building is, designed by Macintosh no less. read more

Not a vegan me - I have neither the puffed up wallet nor the steadfast morals to give up meat, or even cheese or eggs. I do like the idea of healthy eating especially as I find myself transitioning into a more sedentary lifestyle, but the prices and the portions of some vegan places are a tad vulgar. I once found myself paying almost £20 for essentially what boiled down to a spoonful of brown rice and char-burnt tofu, and almost cried hot tears of anger at how dumb I was. Never again. Now I only go to great venues serving decently priced and tasty food and with a beer wash to boot. And all thanks to Yelp! GOING TO STEREO IS NOT DUMB! No rant from me here! My friend for the evening was 'Meek' Kaman. Now Kaman's that reserved, soft-spoken type who never makes himself heard - He's no alpha male. He'll occasionally come up with some off the cuff remarks though, and last night was no exception. Like "They have all the awesome drinks here!!!" and "This is gonna be my new home! In fact next time you phone to ask if I want to go out I'm gonna say - No I'm staying in! But I'll say I'll grab a veggie pizza and a drink from MY bar, I'll get you one while I'm there! Then after a few drinks I'll say we'll go down to my basement to watch Mogwai, Eliza and The Bear or something cool!" Kaman - you took the words right out of my mouth. Almost forgot. The duck? Food is good and the gig space downstairs is always enjoyable hosting to bands such as The beards and Seraph Sin. Nice atmosphere really enjoyed it. Downside and a star stealer for me is the upstair toilets. They are horribly cold and I have a feeling of unease when I need to use them. A stones throw away from central station, Stereo is a great place to spend an evening or while away a saturday afternoon away from the crowds in Glasgow city centre. It straddles the line between bar, cafe, restaurant and live music venue with ease. The food is vegetarian but even a confirmed carnivore like myself will no be disappointed as it's full of flavour. There's a good range of imported beers on tap and the downstairs space is a great place to watch a live band. Evening can get quite busy, especially if there's a gig on. The crowd is cool without being too trendy and you can be sure to avoid the oompa loompa types that populate some of the bars nearby. read more

I come here every time I am in Glasgow! If you've got difficult veggie mates with you then they'll find no complaint here - the food is fantastic, with everything from delicious three bean chilli to tapas to gorgeous calzone - all unsullied by the touch of meat (and lots of vegan stuff too!). The soup I had last time, pumpkin, was the best I've ever had! The range of beers here is excellent, from bottled real ales in the fridge to a wide range of often German beers on tap. This is a great place to see bands - lots of funky indie goodness - everything from twee to screaming metal catered for! This is a lovely little oasis in the middle of the Glasgow city centre and a nice place to seek refuge from the wind, rain and cold. read more

I only came for a gig, and it was a great location - excellent acoustics, good size, bar just for the music lovers (never crowded/long wait!) and enough space to move. I imagine if it was an incredibly popular artist it'd be a bit crowded, but this was an obscure favourite of mine and it was truly amazing to have the experience in this space. Stereo is the perfect spot in the centre of town for veggie food. I met some friends here (one of which is pregnant and veggie, so the perfect spot!) for a quick lunch today. I've been to Stereo countless times, mainly for drinks as it's such a handy pub with a good selection of beer. It's so central but feels a little hidden as down a side street. It also has a great gig space downstairs. I wasn't that hungry today so I just went for some falafels and polenta fries. They were from their tapas selection so £3.95 each. The polenta fries were well seasoned and come with garlic mayo and some chilli. The falafels were on a bed of well dressed cucumber salad which was really nice. One friend got a very large wrap and the other the gluten free mezze which had an amazing amount of food! The service was a little slow today so we didn't stay for coffee. I do love Stereo, but the one thing I CAN'T STAND is the unisex toilets. I just really dislike unisex toilets. SO MUCH. Also, these toilets are pretty gross so there's that too. In brief, Stereo is reasonably priced, has a good selection of food and is a nice chilled out space. It would probably get 5 stars if it wasn't for the bogging bogs. read more

Unusually for a indie/alternative music venue, Stereo is situated in the very heart of the city centre. While other similar venues are on the relative fringes of the city centre (Mono, 13th Noth, Sleazys), Stereo is very centrally located. However, blink and you might miss it as it is situated down a small lane and it isn't really obvious until you walk down the lane towards the entrance. Stereo is a cool place to chill out and enjoy music, food and drink upstairs, and live bands downstairs. A welcome change to the usual places you find in the centre, and the staff and clientele are a decent sort. read more

Hands down our favorite vegan restaurant in Glascow. The food was absolutely incredible. We ordered the jackfruit cakes (similar flavoring to crab cakes) with tartar sauce. The parsnip soup was amazing and so was the bread that came along with it. The beetroot gnocchi had amazing flavors and the vegan wine was divine :). This would be our number 1 stop upon returning. Loved the menu selection and how it's all vegan, but tbh the food was just meh, especially for the price. We got the broccoli veg burger and the tempeh reuben. The burger was bland and kid of burned tasting, amd the reuben seriously lacked substance. It needed way more sauerkraut. read more

Finally got to eat here! It seems plain, at first. Like, why am I here, and what is the fuss about? The menu is sizeable, and has enough gf options to give me more than one choice. Which is already a plus for them. Then it takes forever, and you are talking, so it would normally not seem that long except that you worked up an appetite shopping with three other gals all afternoon. At this point, I'm ready to ask for an apple or something to tide me over. But I sip my water, listen, watch every move the waiter makes, are they coming to me? No! Damn it. This time? Wait, maybe...No! Ok, then finally the food arrives. It is larger than you expected, and smells delicious and you know it is not just your hunger talking. It IS delicious. And despite the fact that usually you leave about 1/3 of the food there, to control yourself, this time you eat it all. And you try a bite of your friend's polenta with ratatouille and wish you had ordered that. MMM. Good. read more

This is the No.1 Vegan restaurant in Glasgow at the moment, totally love it. The decor has been improved recently, which sadly used to let the place down. The food is always ace, normally there is a range of small plates, soups and hearty mains and if your lucky Choc Brownie and Ice cream, which is to die for. First night in Glasgow, visiting from US. Usually challenged to find a delicious gluten free meal that feels like a special night out. Stereo ticked all the right boxes. The food was so delicious and lovingly prepared here. Savory potato mash, cauliflower with whole carrots, onions in an out of this world hearty broth. Fresh, honest vegetables being showcased as vegetables in a main dish not trying to be something they aren't. Every morsel so savory and appreciated, very satisfying dining experience. Stereo is my favourite place to go if I'm in the city centre and looking for yummy food and refreshing drinks. They have an amazing selection of vegetarian and vegan small plates including imaginative specials and desserts. This is also the best place to go for a really late evening bite- food is served until very late. As well as vegan wines and a brilliant range of cool beers and ales they have a fantastic selection of non alcoholic drinks including non-alcoholic beer, rose lemonade (my fave ever- like what unicorns should drink!) and ginger beer. The vibe is very hipster and shabby chic - also there are gender neutral toilets which demonstrate the eclectic equalities oriented ethos of Stereo- everyone is welcome here! Also home to a great live music/club venue regular nights include Push It- all female r 'n b and hip hop- and an impressive array of indie/hipster gigs from guitar bands to electronic beats.
