This was the best instructions we have ever had in Firearms Training! As we all know, Nevada is a firearms friendly state, and since we moved here from California so many years ago, we did not know anything about firearms. As our family started to grow, we started to take lessons for us and our children so that we could understand how to be safe around firearms, the law and how to respect them. We knew that our kids as they grew up, would be exposed to many that had firearms at home and so we embarked on a journey to learn about gun awareness, gun safety. Fast forward, we needed to really amp up our learnings and to obtain our CCW as well. We had our CCW before, but we allowed it to expire during Covid and it had been to long past the grace period so we needed to take another full course. This time, I was not looking for a classroom setting, set on a specific day with a lot of people. I was looking for small group setting and found out about Tim Stephens and Stephens Firearms training. This was the best choice we could have made. 1. Tim is a strong communicator and very timely as well. He will guide you with all you need to be prepared and ready. The process to obtain a CCW is administratively daunting and Tim guides you through the process with ease, helping us to prepare all our applications well in advance. 2. In terms of class size, Tim customized the class size just for us and we started at 2 of us and ended up with a total of 5 attendees. 3. Dates were negotiated based on everyone's availability which is awesome, as most of the other CCW classes I looked at were set on specific dates and so having customized dates based on our needs was perfect. 4. We were also asked a lot of questions that we had about firearms, what information we were looking for and what we thought we needed to know. It was really great that Tim could incorporate many of these things into the CCW mandated curriculum. On my own, I have "made things up" or developed some inconsistent habits and Tim's focus was all about reality, facts, the law, best practices and consistent / repetitive processes. This was so helpful and a game changer for us. 5. Other trainings I have had in past are more classroom like for the CCW or it is at the range but a bit daunting and too quick. Tim's training is a lot more engaging and personalized, so when we did not understand something or needed something to be repeated, it was great to be able to engage at this level to get a much deeper understanding and value from the course. 6. The actual shooting test was also beyond our expectations as not only did we all qualify, but we also learned additional practical hints. 7. After qualifying, Tim spent additional time with us to give us live hints on how we could go beyond qualifying and actually improve our accuracy as well! The entire process with Tim, from the communication, the learning, the process, the qualifying and then the extra coaching was beyond our expectations and exactly what we were looking for in an instructor and coach. Tim was an amazing instructor. Spent a decent amount of time going through safety rules and how to properly do safety checks on my handgun and rifle. Once I felt confident enough we were able to move on to the reloading and unloading stage. Spent some more time understanding how to properly reload and unload both guns and started with proper aiming techniques. Once I started shooting he took the time to make sure I was handling my firearm in a safe and proper manner. He taught me how to aim and improve on my shots. I booked a private class for myself and a group of five friends. Most of us had very little firearms experience and were looking to learn basic, defensive handgun handling. Tim did an amazing job of customizing a class that perfectly suited all of our needs. Before the class, he reached out to everyone in the group to figure out what everyone's goals were, and tailored the classroom portion to our experience level. Every so often you run into an individual who is exceptional at their job. Tim Stevens is just such a person. My husband and I with our three daughters aged 21, 19 and 19 had the opportunity to take a private firearms training course with Tim that exceeded all our expectations. I will mention a few of the things that really stood out. 1. From the moment I first contacted Tim he started asking questions and probing about our familiarity with guns and our goals for the class. Once we got to his classroom it was clear that he tailors each class to each individual. His knowledge of gun use, gun laws, self defense etc.. is very broad. He even added a section on self defense/situational awareness which was so helpful for our daughters to hear. 2. Tim was a teacher and principal and his background as a teacher shines through with the classroom portion of the instruction. We were fully engaged the entire time. If we had more time I would have happily spent hours learning more from Tim. 3. I had never touched a handgun before this course. I was nervous about he idea of holding a loaded gun and watching my family do the same. By the end of the shooting portion at the gun range I felt comfortable handling, loading, unloading and shooting it. Safety is drilled into each student at every step. I would never have believed this level of confidence was possible after just one class. Tim is just that great at what he does. These are just a few of the things that stood out but I could go on. For my son's 14th birthday, having typical teenager interests in guns,(other than his video games) so I decided to gift him with Stephens Firearms Training. Originally, I had no interest in learning to shoot, and just wanted it for my son. I have Fibromyalgia, and that alone would make it difficult for me to do the physical aspects of shooting, on top of the loud noises of shooting, being in large groups, and/or the sitting/standing for long periods of time. Tim had the foresight to custom make a small class with myself and son, and another single mother, with a son similar to my son's age, whom was also celebrating a birthday. I was so impressed with Dr. Stephen's professional teaching methods, which probably stemmed from his years of being a High School Principal, his vast experience of being a Professional Firearms Instructor at Front Sight, as well as being a NRA Basic Pistol and CCW Instructor, and a Nevada CCW, and Utah CFP Instructor. Tim emailed the training course material ahead of time with our names printed on them, as well as providing a hard copy, to take notes on, during the presentation. The temperature was perfect in the training room, although it was important to Tim that everyone was comfortable, and offered adjustments if needed, as well as cold water to drink. The instruction included, but was not limited to: Basic knowledge/Safety, Ammunition/ Ballistics, Grip/Stance/Ready, Weapon Presentation, 4 Secrets to Firing a Weapon, Load/Unloading Guns, and Shooting Drills. We were taught dry practice, the safe trigger position, tested to see our dominant eye, and the 5-step process to holster a weapon. After our safety training, we went to the gun range. We shot with a Glock 19s, Generation 5s in 9mm. I thought the shooting would affect my sensitive hearing, but Stephens Firearms Training provided this cool ear protection that blocked out all the sounds, except for our voices. Tim has the patience of a saint! I loved all the positive constructive criticism, as Tim pointed out, what each of us needed to work on, (after each small session of shooting) in order of achieving our own personal goals. As a special gift for the birthday boys, Tim provided an AR-15 type gun for the boys to shoot. They both were so excited! Tim offered the adults on site finger printing and help filling out the forms for a Concealed Weapons Permit in Arizona, for those that wanted one. I had a hard time seeing the small print and Tim even offered his own reading glasses to help me see. It's good that I wasn't cold, because he probably would have offered the shirt off his back.
