The owner and his wife are among the most disrespectful people I've ever encountered. They need a serious ego check. Their entitlement is beyond comprehension. They treat their employees rudely, put on a fake face for customers, and then disrespect and belittle them, even though they are licensed cosmetologists. I can't imagine going to a salon to learn and grow as a new cosmetologist and being treated like dirt on the floor. It's absolutely disgusting. To make matters worse, the salon isn't very sanitary to begin with, and the front desk lady is quite rude. I've witnessed multiple people waiting for 1-2+ hours to get any service done. In my opinion, it's useless to try and do a walk-in service there. I've also seen people's hair falling out in the salon with color services, and their haircuts have been absolutely butcher jobs. The long wait times, the disrespect from some of the employees, and the overall unpleasant experience have led me to conclude that I absolutely do not recommend this place. I was a client here years ago, and recently came back. I had been going to a salon downtown but, when they moved and it was no longer as convenient for me, stalled on getting a cut forever until I chanced into Stephen's SHV location one day and met Brigitte. How lucky! She has since transferred to this McMurray location, which has been remodeled since I was a client in the past and feels like a very upscale experience. I always feel like a valued client, from the front desk staff to the gentleman passing by while my color processes to ask if I need anything like a drink or a snack, to my stylist herself, who is very talented and constantly looking to grow. She is always participating in educational experiences to reach that next level of skill in cut and color technique. I started with cuts only but quickly realized I was doing myself a disservice with my at-home boxed color compared to what she could do for me and have entrusted my color to her as well. She always listens to what I ask and has transformed my look into something modern and fresh that inspires confidence in me. My minus one star is only because I think your experience here may vary based on your stylist, as I personally know others who haven't been as happy. But my own experience has been first-rate. I paid $109 for my most recent cut and color, which may sound high but is about what I expect for these services at this type of salon in the region. My only minor criticisms would be that there are a couple of things the salon could do to become a little more current: they do text reminders for your appointments but online booking, though it seems to exist, isn't intuitive and appears to require login information that I've never received despite being a longtime client, and instituting a way to tip via an online system or providing stylists' cash app info at the register, as has become standard at other salons I go to, would be really helpful, as many people don't readily carry cash anymore. read more

Not only did the stylist screw up my wife's hair, but when she asked about it, they gave her a hard time and suggested my wife leave without correcting the mistake they made. I've been coming to Stephen's to see Jennifer specifically for over 25 years (since I was a baby - i believe she actually did my first haircut) which alone should speak to the quality of service here. I don't live in Pittsburgh anymore, but I always make it a point to come grab an appointment here while i'm in town. I absolutely refuse to go anywhere else! Amanda was an absolute peach! So sweet and talented too! I'd never gotten my hair professionally colored before and she did an amazing job! She gave me her expert opinion on "sombré" (subtle ombré) and I just love it. Never once did I feel rushed and she made me feel right at home. We chatted the whole time (I probably talked her ear off haha I just felt so comfortable and was having a great time!). I went here to get my hair done for a wedding with the bridal party. There were 7 girls including the bride...so there were ALOT of us. You would think they would have anticipated that we would need attention and time, but it was utter chaos. It's like they hadn't known for months we were coming on that particular Saturday morning to get our hair done. It was so rushed and chaotic that none of us, including the bride, enjoyed the experience. I had even helped them a great deal by straightening my hair beforehand. My hair is really curly and I figured it would be easier to manage and style if I straightened it. I did warn them that I straightened it and not to put any water on it b/c the curls would spring up like perennials in Spring. Now to their credit, the woman who was styling my hair didn't put any water on it, but she was using hairspray and a curling iron (which I told her may not be necessary) and she made a comment, "wow you weren't kidding when you said your hair was curly". b/c as she was spraying the hairspray on the "death by fumes" setting and curling the hair (fire hazard anyone?) my hair was holding on to the curls made by the curling iron with such intensity that the hair spray wasn't even needed. Umm, did I stutter when I said that my hair is very curly. Perhaps I'm being too hard on them, but I had so wanted and expected it to be a good experience (not even great) and I was so disappointed. They didn't do anything that I couldn't have managed on my own with a curling iron and a large can of Aquanet and a few bobby pins. read more

I left the following review on demandforce.com after the salon asked for feedback from my experience. They responded with a prompt to email them. I have emailed them twice and have not received any response: "I have recently moved to the Pittsburgh area, so I am looking for a new salon to call "home." I will be exploring other options before I return here. I showed up on time to my appointment and was taken about 10 or 15 minutes late. The area I waited in was reminiscent of a doctor's office waiting room. My stylist was juggling another client during my appointment and had to leave me in the chair for 5 or 10 minutes to attend to her other client. I understand that these things happen however I have never been left unattended during just a haircut at any other salon before. I was there for only a hair cut so it was a bit disappointing to not receive 30 minutes of uninterrupted service. The stylists communication was not all that clear, and she seemed distracted and relatively uninterested throughout the appointment. The cut was average but I had to ask the stylist a second time to get it the way I had originally asked for it. She asked if I wanted my hair wavy or smooth, which at my previous salon meant a blow out with or without added texture by using a curling iron or brushes. She pulled out a diffuser, asked me to flip my head upside-down, and dried my wavy hair half way through and then said I was all done. I thought that she was going to style it after she diffused some texture into my hair. In retrospect I should have been more clear and assertive especially at a new salon, but on the other hand it is the stylists job to explain what they are doing and instill confidence in the client. I left the salon with a decent enough cut but I was in shock at how she let me walk out the door: with half wet hair and frizzy waves. I then went home and styled my own hair after paying $50 for a hair cut and "blow dry." The entire experience was lack-luster, and was not the high end salon experience that I had anticipated. I left feeling very unhappy, and a salon should not make you feel that way, so I will not be going back. Not even to try a different stylist." read more

I'm not usually the type of person that goes out of my way to post but in this case i felt it was necessary. I've been going to see Katie at Szabo for years. I like to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to what's in style and Katie and I always seem to be on the same page. We once pulled up the same reference photo from Google without indicating to the other what we were thinking. Amazing considering the number of photos on the Internet (think about that). I can't stress enough the importance of having a stylist that knows what you're after and can make relevant suggestions - your head is on display every day after all. The rest of the staff is also always pleasant and remembered who I was on only my second visit. Top notch. She also takes care of my daughter and my son who are in their 20's. Leigh Ann has been in the business for more than 30 years. She keeps up to speed with the latest trends, cuts and coloring. Ok: I have been going to Stephen on/off for 10 years. I have lived through the insults and even staff dragging a comb through my shampoo drenched hair. The latest visit revealed that he is now requesting staff not use conditioner after shampooing. what does he expect when detergent is added to color treated hair? Really disappointed in my experience at the nail salon. Paid for one of the more expensive manicures, and in less than 72 hours the polish started peeling off! In 6 days half of my nails had a fair amount of polish chipped away. This was the worst and most expensive manicure I've ever had. They usually last a couple weeks before they start chipping. I won't be returning. Very disappointed that I spent so much money on my nails, and left a tip, for something that didn't last 3 days. read more

I wish I had read the reviews before booking them for my bridal party, because the chaotic experience that the client below described was the exact scenario that I experienced. I called months ago to see if Stephen's could handle the hair and makeup I needed for my bridal party and they said that they could. However, that was not the case. They booked me (the bride) with a new stylist who was trying to "increase her portfolio." I'm not upset with that girl, but upset with the management because you don't assign a new stylist to the bride to practice on. She was unable to do my hair, and did not do my makeup well at all. Thankfully, 2 amazing women- Bonnie and Norma- had the experience and ability to save the day. Norma created the beautiful updo that I needed (but did not have the assistants that she needed because they kept getting pulled away), and Bonnie not only redid my makeup, but also redid 2 other bridesmaids, as well, to help us look the way that we had hoped we would. I am thankful for the 2 women who literally saved the day, but I would not want another bride to go through the stress and worry that I had to on my wedding day. read more

My daughter recently went to have her hair done at Stephen's at South Hills Village. During her visit, one of the owners struck up a conversation with her and proceeded to express his unsolicited opinions on her college choices, making comments that were rude, insulting and totally unprofessional. I called the salon to explain what had happened and let them know how upset we were. A manager called me back to pass along that the owner "said he was sorry". He did not even have the courtesy to respond to us personally. I've been a Stephen's customer for almost 15 years and I know some great stylists there. I specifically requested Stephen as I thought since he owned the business and had been in business for as long as he has, he would be excellent at what he does. Before washing my hair we discussed what I wanted, which was a simple trim of my current style. I told him it was important to keep as much length as possible. I then had my hair washed and sat down for him to cut my hair. He prepared to make his first cut and had quite a bit of length in his hand. I asked him if that is what he planned on cutting off and he said yes. I reminded him that I wanted a trim only and wanted to keep my length. He then proceeded to tell me he was not going to cut my hair because I would not let him have space to be creative. He said "I'll dry your hair for you though." Really? How nice of him. As I left I asked the two women at the front desk if he does that often and they said "sometimes". read more
