I chose Dr. Madry for a tummy tuck in November 2024 to address the excess abdominal skin left after having two very large babies. At our initial consultation on June 12, he was polite but seemed rushed and didn't spend much time discussing details. Still, he offered to perform the procedure at a reasonable price, so I decided to move forward. The surgery itself went smoothly, but recovery was incredibly painful. I couldn't stand upright for weeks. By January, I noticed swelling in my upper abdomen, which I initially assumed was just part of the healing process. Unfortunately, the bulge continued to grow rapidly, and I knew something wasn't right. I called Dr. Madry's office and was told he was leaving the country and wouldn't be available for another two weeks. At that point, the swelling was about the size of a lemon and getting bigger every day. When I expressed my concern, I was shocked by how I was treated. The office staff was dismissive, defensive, and even blamed me for not coming in sooner. Dr. Madry later called me from overseas and also made me feel shamed and at fault. They referred me to another surgeon at Good Shepherd who was covering for him, but I was told he wouldn't be able to see me for another week. Meanwhile, the bulge had grown to the size of a grapefruit. After some research, I realized I was likely dealing with a seroma--a fluid-filled pocket left behind after surgery. As a professional photographer, this growing mass made it extremely difficult to work. In desperation, I contacted my previous surgeon in Chicago, Dr. Michael Lee, who drained a significant amount of fluid from the area. I continued to see him for repeat aspirations--about ten times--until it became clear that this was not sustainable financially or logistically. Emotionally drained and hesitant to return to Dr. Madry after my experience, I resorted to draining it myself every few days. It's a painful and risky process, involving sterilizing the area and inserting a four-inch needle into my abdomen. Dr. Lee has now advised that I'll need another surgery to permanently resolve the seroma. It will cost $5,000 and require two weeks off work. I've had over ten surgeries in my life and never had any issues--until now. This has been my worst medical experience. Not only is the seroma still present, but the incision from the tummy tuck is large and poorly done. I also continue to have significant swelling that gives the appearance of a pot belly--on top of the seroma in my upper abdomen. Looking back, I deeply regret not investing in a more experienced and compassionate surgeon. I wish I had paid more for someone who would've treated me with care and delivered better results. I was referred to Dr. Madry by my breast surgeon. I was scheduled for an appointment on 2/3/26 to discuss reconstruction after a level 2 oncoplastic excision. The surgeon would be removing a substantial amount of tissue, and reconstruction would be required to maintain symmetry. I had my first lumpectomy in 2024, after a pathology report that came back unable to rule out DCIS. My results had been forwarded to the Cleveland Clinic for a second opinion from the resident expert in ADH and DCIS. They were also unable to definitively rule out DCIS; the clinic states it errs on the side of ADH in these cases. So, I was referred to an oncologist for preventative chemo and had my lumpectomy. Unfortunately, I cannot take the oral chemo, as I had a gastric bypass and suffer from malabsorption. I continued the rotation of a DX mammogram and MRI every 6 months. In December of 2025, I had my follow-up MRI. The MRI showed two areas of concern. They were biopsied and determined to be the same case as before, unable to rule out DCIS. At this point, the issue had returned, and the breast surgeon was treating it as DCIS, unless proven otherwise. This led to the level 2 oncoplastic excision. He stated he had discussed it with Dr. Madry, and I just needed to go for a consult. I showed up 2/3/26, by myself. I thought this would be a standard appointment to go over what would happen during and after the surgery. I was brought into the patient's room and seated in front of a very large window, without shades drawn, for about 15 minutes. Dr. Madry entered the room, holding a file with a piece of paper inside. He said, "I'm sorry you are going through this". I was mid-response of "thank y.." when he interrupted and said, "ADH?? YOU DON'T HAVE CANCER. More like CONGRATULATIONS". He lectured me for the next 4 minutes on how my insurance would never cover the reconstruction. He has dealt with insurance, and he knows. I tried to explain what was going on, and he just said, "Fine. I guess I can take a look. Put on the gown." He walked out while I put on the gown (the window was still wide open). I sat on the exam table, waiting for him. He came in and said, "Stand up and open the gown". I stood up, opened my gown, and he replied, "Well, you are DEFINITELY a good candidate for a lift, anyway." I closed my gown, and he proceeded to tell me, again, that my insurance won't cover any of it, but he will go ahead and submit it. I then asked him, "How long do you think it will take to hear from the insurance?" He replied, "Probably at least a week. I don't know why you are in a hurry. YOU DON'T HAVE CANCER." And walked out. At that point, I got dressed and hurried to my car, where I had a good cry. I then called my breast surgeon's nurse and explained that I have decided not to have the procedure, and I would rather take my chances. They, of course, referred me to another surgeon (my breast surgeon is the absolute best and I trust him 100%). The new plastic surgeon is not only understanding, but also offers suggestions without lectures or humiliation. He acknowledges that my type 1 diabetes is a concern (I have had it for over 40 years) and he will make sure to keep a close watch. The kicker is that I received a bill with a copay of $247.49 for the (less than) 10 minutes that he spent lecturing and humiliating me. If you have had a good experience with this doctor, I will not try to convince you otherwise. However, I want people to know about my experience. To know that there are other options. Maybe he had a bad day, maybe he was overwhelmed, maybe it bothered him that the word CANCER wasn't written in bold letters on my chart? I have no idea. I know that I don't believe in comparative healthcare. Everyone deserves good care and respect. Especially when they are dealing with such an overwhelming situation. read more

Poor listener, doesn't take your concerns seriously. J. Claire Drew, who works with him, awful. Kristen, who also works for him , actually assaulted me prior to surgery with acid peel concentrate on a temperature thermometer on purpose , Causing physical skin damage and psychological trauma . All why asking me why I did not like Dr Madry. Avoid this practice. If this review keeps others from suffering , I am hopeful for you. For over 10 years, I considered on and off a breast reduction to reduce or eliminate my upper and lower back problems. I finally caved in this year after experiencing more days with pain than without and I can say I'm instantly happy. I had my surgery right after thanksgiving and it's been a tremendous improvement on my life already. My back pain is almost completely gone, clothes fit better and my confidence has gone up a bit as well. There was minimal pain after my procedure which has been amazing. Stephen A Madry - Posted on April 14th, 2020 Think twice before using this doctor, I had complications with my incision after reduction and lift for breast cancer surgery. The day of surgery I had heavy bleeding when I got home. Called his office twice with no call back, no direction on what to do. Had necrotic tissue, because incision fell apart. Doctor offered no options on how to fix, he lost interest couldn't even keep him in room long enough to ask questions. Had an open wound for weeks until I switched plastic surgeons. He also does some patient blaming, said wouldn't have happened if I wasn't an ex-smoker. Haven't smoked in 15 years, two other surgeons told me that was not true, and not based in any science. It's deflection. He also has an infuriating habit of leaving exam room door open and walking out when patient is half dressed. I'm so sorry I ever let this doctor do my surgery. His failure to help me after complication delayed my radiation, and then this virus has delayed it even more. That's not the doctor fault but I could have been done before it started, if he would have given me options of a skin graft or wound vac. I understand completely that complications happen, that's not what upsets me. His lack of response if you have a complication upsets me. If you have a complication, that's when you need your doctor the most, my experience was this doctor won't be there for you. His office staff is wonderful, but they don't operate.' read more

Dr Madry has done two surgeries and I am so happy with both procedures. My breast reduction was such a success that I returned a year later to have a tummy tuck. Although the post surgery pain was not as bad as I had expected, I would certainly do it again. He is very professional and his assistant, Claire, is wonderful too. I can't say enough great things about Dr Madry, and his "team" at the office. I was referred to see him by my cancer surgeon in 1/2019. I was diagnosed with breast cancer (2nd time) an had to have a bilateral mastectomy. I opted for breast reconstruction an saw Dr. Madry an his assistant Claire for a consult. He always listened to me with what I wanted an how I wanted to look. It's been a process (4 surgeries in 11 months) I still have nipple reconstruction to go through which Dr Madry is doing. But I got my "rock star boobs" as I told him I wanted. He's a wonderful person and plastic surgeon an I could not imagine having anybody else other than him and Claire an the office staff to go through this journey together. I'm also going to get Botox that Claire will be doing. An I also got a flatter tummy from the fat grafting "extra perk" that I needed to fill in some ripples I had from my implants. I would highly highly recommend Dr. Madry for any plastic surgery you want. He's down to earth, great personality, listens, answers any questions and is very informative. I also can't say enough good things about Claire, his assistant, she rocks!!! Great doctor! I went through a breast reduction surgery and results are beyond my expectations! I can't say how appreciate I am to Dr. Madry and his staff for what they have done for me. After pregnancies and weight gain, my breast increased significantly in size. I struggled with neck, shoulder and back pain everyday. Unfortunately, exercise and PT brought only short term relief, and my GP send me to plastic surgeon. Dr. Madry explained details about surgery, and what realistic results I can expect. However, what I saw after surgery was beyond that! Except instant back pain relief, my breast looks better than ever! Even when I was in my twenties I didn't have that beautifully shaped breast. I am so grateful to have been referred to Dr. Madry. I was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer in February of 2013. It was quickly determined that a double mastectomy would be my best option, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. My breast surgeon recommended that I meet Dr. Madry for a consultation as well, before my surgery, to determine if the reconstructive process could be done concurrently. When I first met Dr. Madry, I wasn't sure what I thought of him. He does not sugar-coat things and will be brutally honest in his medical assessment. However, I came to appreciate his straightforward approach because when you have been thrust into the world of cancer, it is comforting to have someone who is clear, concise, and knowledgeable. The reconstructive process was able to occur concurrently with the surgery and chemo, and Dr. Madry worked well with my various oncologists and surgeons to coordinate surgeries and treatments. ALL of my doctors have commented on what a fantastic job he did (no, I will not post pictures) and after hearing horror stories from some friends with the same diagnosis who did not have the pleasure of working with Dr. Madry, I am grateful every day that he is my surgeon. Most important, Dr. Madry truly understands the psychology of women going through cancer treatment. He took the time to check in with me and treat the whole person. In particular, I remember a time when I was feeling helpless and not in control of my outcome due to an offhand comment made by his staff, who was not aware of my situation. He must have heard the interaction because when he came in to meet with me, he let me know that they were there to give me the outcome I wanted, and that I was in control of this whole process. He empowered me at a time when I felt completely powerless in everything else in my life. Dr. Madry is not the most chatty or sociable doctor, but he speaks with knowledge and compassion. His skills as a surgeon are excellent and precise, second to none. I can't speak to any other surgeries he may perform, but if you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, you will be very fortunate to have Dr. Madry as a member of your healthcare team. read more

One year ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer in both breasts. My cancer surgeon told me I had 2 options: a double lumpectomy or a double lumpectomy followed by breast reduction. She gave me Dr. Madry's name. I was in shock and just wanted to pretend nothing was wrong but my daughter convinced me to at least do an initial consult with Dr. Madry. I am so glad I listened to her. Dr. Madry explained everything in detail and answered all the questions I and my daughter and my husband had, patiently and matter of factly and without any pressure. He said he would save the operation date until I had time to think about it and make up my mind. I decided I would go ahead with it. On the day of the surgery he was the last doctor I saw in the OR prep area and by then my family had been ushered out and I was alone in my bed. He came in and "inked" me and then before he left he looked at me and said "you know you are going to be just fine" and for whatever reason I believed him and began to relax. The surgeries went fine and my cancer is gone but the most amazing things happened later on in my recovery. When I was able to wear a bra again I went to a local lingerie shop since I had no idea what size I was anymore and as any woman knows when being fitted for a bra you are topless in the dressing room. The sales lady knew why I was there and after a bit she asked me if Dr. Madry had done my breast reduction. I said yes and how do you know and she told me she has fitted many woman who for whatever reason had had breast work done and she was able to spot Dr. Madry's work because it is so good. She said not all plastic surgeons are equally talented and the best work she has seen have all been from Dr. Madry. The same thing happened at a shop in McHenry which specializes in garments for breast cancer patients where the woman helping me commented on how equal and perfect my new "girls" were and when I told her I had used Dr. Madry she said she thought so and that several of the woman who work in the shop had also used him. Even my oncologist commented on what a great job my plastic surgeon did! In short I would recommend Dr. Madry to anyone. He is compassionate and professional and talented. He makes you feel at ease and cared for and was always available for questions. read more

Dr. Madry was recommended by my general surgeon for a bi-lateral mastectomy and rebuild. He did not listen to my fears in advance of surgery. I thought I should wait to rebuild because we would not know if the cancer had spread until after the mastectomy. He pushed and I was so consumed with fear and there is so much on your mind going into this major surgery that I agree to rebuild right away. He came into my hospital room the morning after surgery - did not listen to my heart, lungs nor bowel sounds, as a matter of fact, he didn't even come close to the bed and said "hey you look great - want to go home?" He was so cavalier I was shocked. It was literally 24 hours after surgery, I was on IV narcotics, felt awful, and very emotional after this surgery. I live alone and I said "I'm not ready." He still pushed and said I would heal better at home. I never saw him after this first day at the hospital - only his PA. I spiked a fever of 101.7 after surgery while at home & he said I didn't need to go to the hospital that he'd see me the next day in his office. I got to his office & he wasn't even there - it was only his PA. After a couple of weeks a wound opened up on the radiated side - PA put me on antibiotics for a week - when I went back the wound had not improved at all and he still hadn't shown an interest in seeing me, only his PA. I went to a new plastic surgeon to find that there was an actual hole in the wound so my chest cavity and the spreader had bacteria and infection in it. It took two more surgeries with the new plastic surgeon to fix this problem. It had been very, very serious to have a hole in my chest and Madry never even gave me "audience".
