Zagloba Deli & Restaurant - Cabbage rolls combo with buckwheat and cabbage

We had just crossed the border and came here for lunch based on the reviews. This place is located…read morein a strip mall and there were plenty of parking. The restaurant is small, but vast enough that you won't feel squashed. The "buffet" is situated to the side, with menu items framed behind it on mounted shelves and a mural painted next to the shelves. You tell them what you want and they scoop it for you. A TV plays in the very back and the drink cooler sits across from the buffet as well. We ordered the following: Cabbage rolls combo with buckwheat and cabbage on the side. It was basically stuffed cabbage. Hubs & daughter thought this was good, but it was no big deal. It was ok. Mushrooms and cabbage pierogi and cheese and potatoes pierogi - Overall these were good but we've had better. Hubs only had the mushrooms and cabbage pierogi and he said that he enjoyed this better than the entrees. Somehow, he didn't get to try the cheese and potatoes pierogi. Schnitzel with green beans and potato pancake- Daughter liked the schnitzel and thought that the sides were ok. Hubs thought the schnitzel and the potato pancakes could've used a little more crisp and that it should be fried a little bit longer. Taste wise was ok. The string beans were overcooked and reminded him of school cafeteria. He always wanted to try it but felt disappointed. Tripe soup - We over got to eat this while there, so Hubs had it a few days later. He said that this was pretty good. It was beefy and the tripe was nice and soft. This was one of the better tripes he's had in his lifetime. Daughter is diabetic and wanted diet soda but they didn't have any, so she ended up getting water. The restaurant was cute but it was cold. All the patrons were wearing coats. Place could use some heat. Service was friendly and quick, though. Glad we got to try it, though.

The food here is definitely homemade, you can tell that a lot of love is put into making the food…read more Everything was fresh, and tasty; portion sizes were large however, the temperature wasn't as hot as I would have liked it. The restaurant itself looks a bit old, and may need a renovation in the near future. Service is wonderful, with the cashier giving us the food quickly, along with a smile. A great experience overall, and would recommend to someone who wants authentic Polish food!

The owner (I believe she is the owner) greeted us and told us we could sit anywhere. She brought us water and menus. My sister and I ordered 2 cabbage rolls, Potato and Cheese Pierogies, Meat Pierogies with bacon and onions to share. For my son, we tried ordering the schnitzel sandwich, but was told that was unavailable. My son doesn't eat mashed potatoes so I asked if I could just order him a schnitzel and she said yes. The food came out in about 15 minutes. The cabbage rolls were fantastic, the perfect amount of acidity in the sauce. I really don't like tomatoes or cabbage, but there is something special about the cabbage rolls. I ate very bit of mine. The pierogies were wonderful. I usually prefer just potato and cheese, but honestly between those and the meat, I couldn't decide which I liked more. Both were flavorful especially with the sauteed onions and sour cream. My son's schnitzel was huge! He could only eat about half of it and when my son asked for ketchup (much to my dismay) the owner was very nice about it and commented that's the way her daughter likes it too. Honestly the food was absolutely wonderful and the service was great. It was very similar to what I had in Poland. If this restaurant was closer to my home I would visit often. We had no issue with parking. We were able to get a spot on the street right in front of the restaurant. Parking was also not too expensive since you aren't in the downtown area. If you are in the area and want a wonderful meal, be sure to visit.

Cafe Polonez is a really solid spot in Toronto for Polish food. I came with a few friends to try…read moresomething different, and it turned out to be a fun and very filling meal. The pierogi were the highlight for me. They're flatter than the dumplings I'm used to, and I was surprised by how potato-forward they were. We tried the potato and cheese as well as the potato and onion, and personally I thought the potato and onion had more flavor. We also tried the sausage and mushroom version, which was good too, but the potato fillings were definitely the more memorable ones. I would not recommend ordering 6 or 12 pierogi for one person unless you are very hungry, because it is a lot and you only get one flavor. The better choice is probably one of the larger combo plates, which gives you 3 pierogi plus a few classic sides and mains. The sampler-style plate was actually a great way to try more of the menu. It came with pierogi, hunter's stew, schnitzel, pickled vegetables, and condiments, and it was more than enough for one person. The hunter's stew had a strong sauerkraut flavor, and the schnitzel was thin, crispy, not too greasy, and very satisfying. We also ordered the cabbage rolls, which came in a big portion with tomato sauce. They were decent, but for me the filling was a little mild and the portion felt too large. We tried a Polish beer as well, though honestly I could not tell much of a difference. Overall, this is a family-run restaurant with a simple, homey atmosphere rather than a fancy one, but it is clearly popular for a reason. The food is hearty, comforting, and worth trying, especially if you want a casual place to explore Polish cuisine.

Street parking was reasonably easy to find. We were seated way back in the restaurant and the seating was a little uncomfortable as our table was set up right next to the bar (but way too close to the bar, because our table was long) and other patrons had to constantly shimmy through a small gap between our table and the bar to get to the washrooms downstairs. Not great. We ordered a family style meals to share (combo for 2 and a combo for 4) and the amount of food that came out was probably enough to feed 10 very hungry adults. Definitely do not indulge on the bread basket that comes before the meal, because you will need to save room for the main event. The massive platters came loaded with pierogies, 2 different types of cabbage rolls (my favs!), schnitzels, and various condiments (?) of cooked beets, carrots, cabbages...etc. We were first served 1 different soups; white borscht and beet soup and both were tasty. The meat dumplings in the beet soup balanced out the sweetness of the broth and it worked well. I personally preferred the white borscht which was perfectly sour and a slightly over-powering sausage taste. The refreshing cucumber salad with dill in sour cream was a great accompaniment to somewhat heavy tasting meal. The hunters stew was a hearty bowl of tender morsels of meat, potato dumplings in a well balanced tomato based sauce. Although most of our food was great, we found the cabbage rolls (the traditional tomato version) and the schnitzels too dry. And along with the issue of having to deal with people constantly brushing by, I am taking away 2 stars. I may revisit Cafe Polonez if I'm back in the area, but not in a huge rush either.

Bar 4 U has been on my bookmarks for quite some time. I've been meaning to visit for a while, but the last time was on a Friday night and my companion was intimidated 'cause she didn't see any visible minorities inside, so we left. To me though, this is a GOOD sign as I usually judge a place by their patrons. So if a Polish sports bar is only filled with Polish people, that means the food is pretty authentic! On the other hand, a Chinese restaurant filled with Caucasian people = no bueno. :) During my visit, atmosphere and service were slightly - just slightly - better than the food. Even though 3 salads accompanied dishes, 2 of them had bottled Italian dressing so they tasted pretty much the same to me. Some of the lettuce and the lime wedge that came with the water were browning on the edges. So prepped beforehand, not super duper fresh. Pierogies were better than the kopytka (pieces of potato "dumplings"). Prior to ordering the Kopytka with the Goulash, we asked if it was the same goulash on menu, e.g. beef. The waitress confirmed it, but goulash was definitely pork. Food was more homestyle, so not doused in salt. Food was solid, portions were fairly big, but I've had better Polish food elsewhere. I wouldn't be opposed to going back though to try other items on menu! Tip: They have 2 large screen tvs, playing 2 different types of sports. So perhaps it would be a good place to see a match!
