Booked this ticket days ago, in anticipation of doing something fun with my father--who drove all the way from Modesto to pick me up. Their rail yard is down the road from SMF airport, so it seemed like the perfect activity! After landing, we drove straight over (30 minutes early) for our 5 PM rail car reservation. They were open, and two staff members were sitting in the back having a chat. At first, they didn't show any interest in the fact that we had walked in, and I thought we had come to the wrong place. It was only after I started approaching them that one of the staff members got up and said "We emailed you--we've cancelled the 5 PM excursion due to rain." She made a snarky comment about how I should have known they emailed me. I told her that I literally just got off a plane and came straight from the airport--I barely even had a chance to check my email. Worse yet--when I found the email. They had sent it at 3:40 PM. Less than an hour before the 4:30 PM arrival time that they specified when I had booked the activity. So, yes, they did email me, and I did miss it due to my circumstances... but it's still unacceptable for them to cancel an activity less than an hour before they tell you to arrive. When I inquired why the excursion was cancelled, she said it was due to the rain. I replied and said: "Your website says to dress appropriately because railbikes run RAIN or SHINE.'" To which she said, "Yeah, that only when it's drizzling". ‍ Great, so their website lies. And on top of that, it wasn't even raining when we arrived. Just cloudy and a little chilly--but we were dressed appropriately and ready to ride. She suggested that we reschedule, but I said that was unacceptable because my father lives in Modesto (2 hours away) and that we wouldn't be able to come back. Nor would we risk rebooking and driving back to Sacramento knowing that their modus operandi is to cancel reservations less than an hour beforehand. Have you seen gas prices these days? Their website says that they don't do refunds. But I was very serious that we needed a refund (otherwise I was going to do a chargeback for fraud). Thankfully she backed down on the rebooking idea and gave me my money back. Seemed like the staff just had no interest in doing their job because it rained earlier. And, as far as I'm aware, they didn't even try to call me. That's not a way to run a business. Stay away!

We increased our knowledge of the animals and of the farm but also got to feed them. We also had the opportunities to get close and personal with them for pictures. They were all friendly and fluffy. I recommend this unique experience for all because if you do not just break your usual pattern to stop and smell the roses or to pet and feed an Alpaca, life will pass by before you know it. We stayed in touch over the next several weeks before settling on an August date. We braved the high temps and winding roads to arrive at the ranch. It's a beautiful space on a hillside and you can see the herd and their guardian llama as you pull into the parking lot. We learned a lot about the alpaca life cycle, fed the boys, and my daughter got to hold and carry a cria. We bought two cute alpaca shaped soaps. I didn't experience any of the negativity others have complained about. It is a working ranch so it's not a petting zoo or a tourist attraction. Go with the flow and you'll have a great experience.

The ride does start very early, so I would suggest grabbing a quick energy drink or going ahead and having your first mimosa so you can really enjoy the experience! You also receive a glass of wine afterward, and that wine was so lit! I recently found out about this place from a friend's Instagram story when they went. So I made…read moresure to plan a hike here for when I had time. I was able to come here in the middle of the week around noon. The GPS made this place easy to find. There is plenty of parking here at pena adobe park and lagoon valley park. The hike is located at lagoon valley park, so don't mix those up. You do have to pay $5 for parking, and the machine kiosk was broken when I went, but you can still pay through the park mobile app, which is what I did. The hike is listed as moderate, but felt borderline difficult to me (maybe I'm just out of shape). There is a lot of up hill when you first start, and because there wasn't a lot of shade combined with me going on the hottest day of the week (low 80 degrees), it did make it feel more difficult. After I parked, I was a bit confused on where to go so had to ask someone finishing up their hike for the direction. I was instructed to go up the main trail past the gate for the main trail to the lighthouse at the top. There are lots of trails here, but the one to the top of the hill is the most popular, and probably the most difficult). Once you park in the lot by the lake/pond, you cross the road to the grassy side and follow that trail to the gate that keeps the cows inside. There is another easier hike/walk your can take around the lake/pond, which is mostly flat. The views on this hike are great. Despite it being a little warmer, the breeze helped a lot. I liked the views and made it to the top after about 1 and a half hours. In total, it took me about 2 hours to finish the hike. And that's with a 20 minute break halfway going uphill. Going downhill is a lot faster. I'll be back for one of the other trails and how to bring family and friends to join.

Trees and bushes hide smaller birds and provide shade in spots. It looked like they had lots of picnic tables, playgrounds for kids etc. We were not here long, so I'm sure there was a lot more to see and do.
