My new favorite pediatrician. The staff is friendly and professional. They're very caring and understanding. Dr Alviar is the best. I love how she calls after hours to check on her patients. It really shows me how much they care there. I never got that from the last pediatrician I used to take my kids to. I'm so glad my friend referred me here. I never wait long to be seen and there's never a problem with parking. This is my third pediatrician since moving to Arizona in 2007 and this is where we'll stay. My family just moved to AZ from CA so of course our health insurance changed as well. I found step by step pediatrics on Yelp and saw how great their reviews were so I called and made an appointment for my daughter. My daughter was nervous for her appointment because she had had the same doctor for 13 years in Ca, but as soon as she entered the office and was greeted with smiles and a warm environment I could see her calm down. After the appointment my daughter was very happy, and told me she likes her new Dr better then her last one! I'm so happy with Step By Step Pediatrics such a wonderful environment for both kids and parents. read more

Update: Brought my daughter back for her 3 year check up! Setting an appointment is easy and the ladies in the office are extremely nice and helpful. There has never been a doubt in my mind about choosing Step by Step Pediatrics as my daughter's primary care provider. All of the doctors and nurses are very informative and are there because they genuinely care about the children. read more

I've brought my six year old here since he was a newborn and now the baby comes here too. Dr Peterson is our favorite, but everyone is so nice and thorough and if either of my boys ever get sick, it seems like they can always fit us in within hours. If I could change anything, it would only be that they were back in Ahwatukee again. read more

We've been taking my son here since he was a week old! Granted he's only one year not but still. :-) we've seen a few different doctors, dr Peterson, dr Theresa, along with some others. We've had quite a few appointments in the past year as he's struggled with reflux issues. The doctors have always been welcoming and knowledgeable and the reception staff is amazing. I have been going to Step by step pediatrics for about a year now and we are really happy there. We have met most pediatricians and PAs and have been extremely satisfied with the care our little one has had. All of the staff is very nice and caring and I feel the pediatricians do a great job at connecting with my daughter. Also they almost always have open times for when my daughter is sick. We are new to the area so we were looking for a new doctor for our two children. I took my daughter into Step by Step because she was sick and had pink eye from preschool. The first thing I noticed is they have two separate entrances for sick and wellness check ups, however they lead to the same place. There is no wall separating the spaces and they only put toys on the healthy side. They want to sick kids to be kept on one side of the room where there is nothing but a tv. All kids are going to be drawn to toys... The staff needs to figure out a different way to separate the entrances. read more

I love Step By Step. I have never had difficulties reaching someone to schedule an appointment and emergency appointments are often available the same day. The practitioners have wonderful bedside manner, respectfully treating my young sons and kindly listening and responding to any questions or concerns that I have. The after hours advice care is also excellent. During cold and flu season, they also offer urgent care on Saturday mornings. How I wish that I could find a general practice for my husband and I that I like as much! read more

So, I usually like to look at Yelp reviews before visiting anywhere. Came across this place thinking that based on the reviews I would love to bring my twins here. I showed up to my appt.., only for the receptionist to tell me that their appt. was for the day before. I advised her that one of the nurses called me a week prior to appt.. and a day prior to the appt.. that I know for a fact their appt. is today. There nurse just called me yesterday. So after waiting 20 minutes for her to figure out what was going she said that the nurse called day before to let me know that their appt. was missed when in fact I spoke to the nurse over the phone who told me yesterday that it was for today. My mom also reminded me that it was for today because we had made arrangements for it before school. I would not recommend this place to a friend or colleague. Also given the fact that I drove 30 minutes out of my way based on reviews. read more

Not only is this office clean and professional, but it's the only doctors office I have been to where they get you in immediately and not have to wait forever to see the doctor. We have been going to this office for approximately 2 years with a total of 3 kids. We came to this location because our last office couldn't keep a scheduled appointment. The staff at step by step are always very nice and attentive to the kids. We generally visit dr. Abigail, she is awesome! She is very knowledgeable and good with the kids. We couldn't ask for anything more from a doctor office. The office itself is divided by a large fish tank for sick and well kids. It's kinda cool and the rooms are decorated nicely for kids . The staff has always been good about working us into the schedule for appointments. I would suggest this place to anyone . read more

I wouldn't give any star at all, but this is not an option. I won't tell how nice doctors were to me or how many times Dr. Bishop or Dr. Peterson smiled to us. I will talk about professionalism, attention of these doctors to my child's health, symptoms of his sicknesses, and their readiness to perform their duties as pediatricians. When my child was 2 years old, I brought him to Mrs. Peterson with cough and high fever. According to her words, bronchitis had high occurrence at that period, they dealt with many children diagnosed with it. BUT! Taking tests for bronchitis is quite a painful procedure, and Mrs. Peterson didn't really want to cause discomfort for my son. Therefore, "let's hope it is not bronchitis." I was a first time mom. And I had very little experience with this type of doctors. I was of the opinion that every doctor - especially the one who is a mother herself! - realizes all responsibility laid on her shoulders when it goes about accurate diagnostics and timely treatment. Puzzled and confused, I had to submit to her decision. The following night my baby had fever up to 104. I took him to the urgent care and guess what we found out? Bronchitis! I swore I would never lay a food on Mrs. Peterson's office door. We decided to stay with Dr. Tanya Horner in the same office. At that time she had less experience, but how attentive, thorough and careful she was and still is! How professional she is! It was a pleasure to work with her. 4 years after our unpleasant occurrence with Mrs. Peterson my son had high fever and swelling red tonsils. We came to the office to see Teresa, the only available physician assistant on that day. A nurse took samples from my son's throat to test if it was strep. The result came back negative. We were let go home with standard instructions of warm drinks and plenty of rest with reassurance that 3 days later the child should be back to normal. 3 days later situation worsened significantly. The tonsils increased in size, acquired bright red color, lymph knots increased too, fever never went away. (Yes, I am not a professional, but the worsened state was so obvious even to me, non-professional!) I brought my child to Step by Step again and had a pleasure to see Mrs. Bishop. She disregarded extremely bad state of tonsils and lymph knots, and solely relied on his high fever, sending us to an unnecessary Xray trying to find reason of persistent fever in possible inflammation in the lungs. Xray didn't reveal any abnormalities. And then Mrs. Bishop referred us to the urgent care to have them done blood-work. (It is sufficient to say, urgent care does not provide such services.) What happened here - lack of desire to look deeper into the symptoms (which were indeed so obvious!). Maybe on Friday evening she was too tired to try to find the answer what was happening to my child. With symptoms so obvious, Mrs. Bishop didn't bother to double check my son's throat, and plainly shifted her responsibilities on others letting them do her work. She just sent my child (who had had fever for 9 days by that time) out into the world, without definite direction and destinations. I did take my son to an urgent care the following day. The doctor was stunned to see enlarged tonsils and lymph knots, and took samples for strep. It was positive. To my question how it happened that a nurse at Step by Step wasn't able to detect it, her answer was simple: "it should be taken very thoroughly". Yes, let's blame the nurse. But should a professional, who is entrusted with health of your children, overlook obvious symptoms and blindly rely on mistaken results? What should be in the focus of a doctor's attention - to find the cure for the child and heal him? Or just cover herself with procedural requirements? If we didn't have the accident with Mrs. Peterson, I would perhaps remain more loyal to this office. But when 2 doctors out of 3 (!) demonstrate the same extent of dereliction of duty and negligent performance, we can see a tendency. Therefore, my advice to those parents who truly care about their children and want to see them grow healthy - stay away from Step by Step. Seek professionalism and true care, not just how nicely the personnel smiles to you. read more

I have been bringing my son to Step By Step Pediatrics since he was a newborn, back in 2010. Never had any complaints! They are very professional, polite, and clean. I never feel rushed during my visits and they always double check they've answered all of my questions prior to leaving. I am impressed that I am always able to get same day appointments! So glad I found this pediatrician. I'm a Patient Experience Director for a local hospital system and I can say as someone who does this stuff for a living that THIS is how you run a medical office. I've been in (way too) frequently with my son for his frequent ear infections and we've seen Dr. Bishop, Dr. Peterson and Theresa the PA. I like all 3 providers, they are very caring and take their time to listen and explain things. When I call on the phone they immediately answer - it's not the 15 minute phone hold music I put up with at my previous pediatrician's office. They keep enough sick child same-day appointments available so we can get in that day if we have to and when I call with a question during business hours they always have a provider return my call that day. I like the sick child/well child entrance, the waiting room and exam rooms are always clean, and we rarely have to wait more than 10 minutes past the appointment time to see the doctor. If my son gets prescribed something it's instantly transmitted to our pharmacy so by the time I drive over there, the Rx is ready. Seamless. The front office staff is friendly and helpful and I'm just very pleased overall. I'm mad at myself that I put up with another pediatrician's office treating us like crap for 10 months before I finally switched! read more

I would not recommended this place for any of your children. I have had two issues here with two of my kids. They force you to come to multiple visits when it is not necessary. They do this to bill your insurance as much as possible. This happened with my 2 year and my 8 year old. They nurse practitioner's who will always see, never the physician, will diagnose your child initially, then when your child doesn't feel better, your are forced to come back to another visit. You will then see another nurse practitioner, and if you are forceful enough, may give you an antibiotic. This can take up to 3 times as that happen with my 2 year old. If you have a co-pay it can get costly, plus it's frustrating when your child is not getting better. Both of my children had to live with bronchitis for nearly a week before the finally prescribed an antibiotic for bronchitis. Keep in mind, I initially told them that's what it was. I highly recommend you stay away from this office and find somewhere else. read more
