If I could give this place negative stars I would. They failed my son. He ended up in the ER the next day for an emergency surgery. Their failure led to 24 hours of agonizing pain for my infant and long term health effects. He was vomiting the night before at 3 am. I called requesting an appointment that same day. First the person assisting me made it seem normal that an 8 month old throws up and acted as if I was overreacting. During the phone call, he vomited and I said I am coming in. No doctor office should make a mother feel like she's overreacting. Period. At the time I thought it was a stomach bug. Dr. Nguyen confirmed it could just be a stomach bug. I thought it was weird how she didn't check my son's diaper but I didn't question the doctor because I thought that maybe there was different physical evaluations when a baby is sick. I wish I said something...I went home and that night my son continued to vomit. All night in agonizing pain. I called the next day and informed them swelling on my son's testicles. This time the person I called to schedule another appointment said to go to the ER. My son ended up with testicular torsion and almost lost a testicle. This is a situation that every minute counts. A full 24 hours passed and my son could have been in surgery. He could have had lesser issues with the testicle that was twisting. Dr. Nguyen failed my son and cut corners. I called to inform the office what happened weeks later. While I respect that Dr. Nguyen called me to say to discuss the extreme miss. She verified that every minute counts with testicular torsion. Being in surgery a full 24 hours earlier could have changed the outcome of my son's health. She is not diligent in her role as an advocate for children. Particularly children that cannot speak. She should have caught that. I've talked to other pediatricians about her care and they said she cut corners and testicular torsion is a hot topic in school. It's difficult for me to think that she only cut corners with my son and he so happened to be extremely ill. I've sat on this review for weeks to ensure that I give a fair review. I think it's important to call out the doctor who failed my son. I thought about not saying her name. I hope she grows from this and learns by failure. However, I would not put my trust in them. She informed me they will review their policies to ensure diligence but it's too late for my son. read more

If I could leave zero stars I would. I have been going to step by step pediatrics since I was a child until I aged out and then I had a baby in 2024 and let them care for my child as their pediatrician. I have had no bad complaints up until now. I am 9 weeks postpartum and take my new child to step by step as well. I called them and inquired about personal information pertaining to one of my children and they told me they would call me back. Instead they called someone else who is not listed on my children's records or in their files and released information. When I found out about this I went in to address the situation with the office manager Dawn. I was met with yelling and shouting and a paper being waived in my face and laughter about the complaint from the receptionists. Stating that there was no breach of privacy. 30 minutes after I left the office manager Dawn sent me a termination of care notice. This is extremely upsetting and they cannot be trusted with personal information. read more

Brought my daughter as a newborn here, on an "off" chance, as the pediatrician I had chosen for her originally, was out of town and having all patients come here until they got back. Everyone was so amazing here, from front office staff, to nurses, and ultimately Dr Nguyen - she sold me, and I decided this is where I wanted my girl to come going forward. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Alviar and Step by Step Pediatrics. The staff is warm and friendly which is a godsend when you are a new parent worrying about every little thing. I have been met with nothing but care and compassion when I call to ask questions of the triage nurse, and I have always been able to get in the same day when there was an acute issue going on. Dr. Alviar has a wonderful ability to engage with my daughter and make me feel heard during each appointment. I am so grateful to have found such an amazing practice. read more

If you care about your children don't send them here! At a wellness checkup, my daughter's height was all off. They suggested we put her on growth hormones. After a few minutes they came back into the office saying "oh we just painted the office it seems that someone re hung the growth chart wrong". They also stopped accepting my children as well as others we know who go here because of refusal of vaccines. They won't meet their monthly quota to fill their own pockets $ if kids aren't getting poisonous vaccines. Any doctor's office pushing a covid vaccine on a child is clearly a scam. Dont recommend this place at all. We went here when my son was a newborn and saw dr Nguyen. I would leave every single appointment crying and worrying for hours while I was in the worst of my postpartum trying to navigate things as first time parents. She made us feel like we were not feeding our baby since he would not drink 24 oz a day as a newborn and would constantly have us come in for weight checks although every single time we came in he was gaining weight. the office staff would make comments negatively too like "wow he's just not gaining weight??". Overall she made us feel pretty stupid and made us feel like terrible parents. A we found a new pediatrician who told us our baby was thriving and gaining weight just fine and that all babies are different. I can tell dr Nguyen just doesn't have very much experience with newborns at all and goes strictly off of what a textbook tells you. I'm so glad we made the switch. read more

I used to take my children to Step by Step Pediatrics when Doctor Peterson was there. She is so amazing and really helped my children when they needed to see her. They would fit my children in some times too when they didn't have any availability. I really do recommend them to anyone, and wished we still lived over there in that area to take them there. read more

Just had my first child 6 months ago so when looking for a pediatrician I wasn't sure exactly what to do. When I called Step by step to schedule a meet and greet the front desk was super friendly and the doctor was great at answering my questions. Now that my daughter is here we see Dr Alviar and she is amazing!! I could not ask for a better doctor for my little girl! The front desk ladies are so sweet every time we go in and they are always available to answer questions via phone or for quick appointments if needed! I highly recommend this office! I've been taking my children here for years. It's been just OK, imo. We've always struggled to get appointments w/in a reasonable timeframe when the kids have been sick. They also push the Covid Vax for young children which was a huge disappointment. Every single statistic shows that it's not only ineffective, but downright dangerous to give this experimental shot to children. The risk reward is incredibly lopsided & the only reason to push this is due to $ motivation. Very unethical. read more

We loved all the Dr.'s! However there was a mix-up with our "payment" due to insurance change, medical spending account change, and husband placing mailed invoices in work papers on our WFH desk, etc. I called to clear up the matter and the Billing Manager put us in collections. Fine, no big deal because we could pay the bill and asked to pay it over the phone so that it would be cleared up. After three phone calls back and forth to get this matter figured out... they would not take our payment, they required me to then call the collection agency to pay the bill, before they would even schedule my sick child (during COVID-19) for an appointment. Again, while I understand billing is an issue and some do not pay, etc., my child has been a patient for over 5 yrs and we have NEVER had billing issues. Needless to say, my sick child is more important than arguing with someone at the front desk about payment, so we are no longer with Step By Step! read more

We've been coming here for a year since my daughter was born. A coworker recommended this office to us. We commute from east Gilbert for these doctors! We started with Dr. Horner and was incredibly bummed that she left but we've seen Dr. Bishop and Dr. Peterson times as well. The front desk staff has always been extremely friendly and kind. I have rescheduled multiply times and they've never had a problem and got me rescheduled. Really great facility especially when you are a first time parent. I don't often leave reviews but I was so impressed by how thoughtful and professional the staff and doctors at Step By Step were especially during these scary Covid times. All three of my kids have seen Dr. Peterson for years and they all really feel comfortable with her. She has taken care of my kids through all sorts of sickness and even through some broken bones :/ We also see Theresa who is absolutely fantastic! I was really looking forward to finding our new pediatrician after reading all of the great reviews. I took my son in for his well visit appointment. Front office staff was great and the nurse was great. The nurse practitioner that saw our child had really good bedside manner. My complaint was that she didnt check his ears inside, didn't check his nose, eyes, or listen to his heart! I called to voice my concerns and the man I spoke with said they don't normally check the ears unless there's some concern and it was in her notes she did an external exam. What good is an external exam! I do that myself daily. I don't know if that kind of well visit is typical for Arizona but in Texas it was very thorough! read more

We have been very pleased with the care our children have received from all of the practitioners at Step By Step - MDs and NPs alike. Office visits are never rushed, and Dr Bishop and Dr. Peterson both take parents' concerns and wishes seriously. Saturday hours during peak cold and flu season are a huge plus! Dr. Peterson correctly identified a congenital heart valve defect in our 5 day old son... a condition missed prenatally, by hospital staff at delivery, and - according to the cardiologist - so subtle he doubted he would have caught it himself without the aid of advanced technology. Thanks to Dr. Peterson, we were able to get our baby immediate treatment for a condition that could have presented much later in life with serious consequences. I recommend Step By Step to any brand new parents looking for a quality peds practice, or to families recently relocated to the area. read more

I have been coming to this pediatrician for 3 years now and I love them. Today, especially so. I was having a horrible morning and was running unbelievably late to an appointment I had made to get my daughter in, because she was complaining of ear pain. I called them, near tears and even though they were already completely booked, they fit me in at a later time. Decided to switch pediatrics offices after seeing two different pediatricians at step by step, after my husband wasn't too happy about the first one. Every time we would leave from a check up appointment, they did nothing but just stress me out. I would leave constantly worried about my baby. We LOVE this place! Always friendly service. Appointment setting is also easy. The doctors assistants are just as knowledgeable as the doctors. The office is always clean and kept up to date. I've been taking my 13yr old to this office from the day she was born and the office staff is always helpful. (Was informed of her last wellness apt and they let me know insurance might not cover since it hadn't been a full year) THATS SERVICE! As of February 2018, this clinic is overwhelmed. Expect long waits on phone, and don't expect to be able meet your assigned doctor other than during the well-baby visits. We have had 3-4 visits during the last fall for ear infections, fever etc., and none of them were with her doctor. So, if your baby is well most of the time, (or if you only need to meet her doctor when she is well), this place is great. Just don't count on getting to see her doctor when she is ill. read more

I love this place. Dr. Petersen is wonderful with kids - she is gentle and sweet and has loads of wonderful parenting advice for such things as potty training and sleeping habits. Her Nurse Practitioner, Mrs. Ricketts is equally wonderful. At some offices, if you hear that your symptoms only qualify for a nurse visit, you wonder if you will get a thorough checkup. Mrs Ricketts is wonderful - she takes her time and has lots of great home remedies for simple ailments instead of over the counter medicine. The office is kept very clean, and the staff are extremely friendly. I am very happy we found this place. read more

we received wonderful care from dr. courtney bishop from the day my son was born and all throughout his rehabilitative care after his heart and stomach surgery. she's thorough and attentive and is very straight-forward, which was great when we had so many things we were always worried about. i wish we could have continued our pediatric care with her for our son, but we've recently moved to california and had to say goodbye. we miss her and the staff dearly. the nurse practioners, office staff, and on-call personnel are all wonderful people who take their jobs seriously and consider your child's health to always be top priority. read more

After a not-so-recent move to this area, we finally transferred to this pediatrics office and I am completely impressed with the doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, and staff. With two young children and the cold/flu season here, we have been to plenty appointments in just the last few weeks and at every single appointment we were treated beautifully. The staff is caring and supportive and I always feel that we have a relationship based on mutual trust and respect. In several instances just this year, I was able to make same-day appointments without any problems. I ordered a copy of our immunization record and it was available for pick up within an hour. We stick with Dr. Bishop for well check ups. She is always so thorough and makes sure she doesn't miss anything.
