Tasty, upscale comfort food with uniquely twisted cocktails define this quaint little restaurant nestled beside the plush rolling hills of Waupoos, Ontario. A picturesque drive through Prince Edward County will take you to Stella's Eatery, a widely adored dining spot with a seasonal menu inspired by local farmers, producers, and nature. Step out of your car to the ambience of peaceful silence elevated by crickets, and the tone is already set for a laid back and enjoyable evening. Step inside a warm and cozy atmosphere with stylish and rustic decor. We were greeted by Evan, who would also be our server.
We ordered a drink from Cristina at the bar while waiting for our friends to arrive. Their cocktails have a unique spin to them and the Manhattan was especially delicious. Cristina is also the General Manager and owner. She was really nice and at one point we were talking about wine and she showed us a marketing letter from Rosehall Run Vineyards, also in the County, that had a riddle on it. When our friends arrived we deciphered the riddle, which used a pop culture reference to promote one of their new release wines.
We were excited Stella's was participating in Quintelicious, a culinary celebration featuring local food and drink from farmers and producers across the Bay of Quinte region. Their Quintelicious menu has three options, each containing a starter and a main, and there were two dessert options. With four in our group, we ordered one of everything to share, plus some spicy chicken wings and beer battered pickerel from their A La Carte menu.
The plates were innovative and elegantly presented. It was all delicious and perfectly shareable but two dishes completely stole the show-- the Arancini appetizer and the Braised Bison Brisket main. Let's talk the starter, for starters. The wild rice and squash Arancini came with pea purée, Lighthall Manchego, and espellette oil. Crispy on the outside, smooth and creamy on the inside; fresh and hot and delicate, it was everything you want an Arancini ball to be. With the four of us splitting every dish, we each got half an Arancini, which of course only teased the taste buds and left us wanting more, in a good way.
The Braised Bison Brisket came with perfectly whipped Yukon golds, Swiss chard, and juniper blueberry jus. Each bite was a flavour punch that had us scraping up every last morsel of those potatoes and jus. We've all been there, struggling to find the balance between greedy and gracious when rationing your seconds from a shared plate. Needless to say our compliments went to Chef Leah Marshall, who is also an owner.
Without even looking at the wine menu, we asked Evan to recommend a dry bottle of white, and did Evan ever deliver. In the glass was a very delightful 2020 Luna Gaia Agramante Grillo from Southern Italy. It was light and fruity with a pleasant blast of citrus. Many of their wines are not in the LCBO, and I enjoyed this one so much I found myself scrambling to track down a bottle days later after the producer had sold out (I was successful and the bottle is currently in my cellar). I also ordered a savoury glass of local Cabernet Sauvignon to accompany the brisket.
Among the rest of our meal were the sweet pea salad and chicken liver mouse appetizers, rainbow trout raviolo and grilled mushroom mains, with an apple rhubarb tart and cedar crème brûlée rounding out the desserts-- the latter being the unanimous favourite of the two.
We were stuffed. It was a fantastic evening of great food and great company. The fact that the menu is always changing gives us even more reason to come back again soon, and I look forward to when we do. read more
