Stella Jean's Ice Cream is a California-based ice cream shop that focuses on small-batch, super-premium, and locally made ice cream. Stella Jeans is always a must when I'm in the area! They have unique rotating and year round flavors and allow you to sample the flavors before settling on your order. My go to flavor is the mango sticky rice. It's not too sweet and the mango swirl is refreshing. I'm always torn between flavors and opt for the split single scoop option. The location has a parking lot and is near other food stores.
Located in Carlsbad Cottages, you won't regret getting a sweet treat from Stella. There's public parking right between the cottages, or you can find street parking. It does get busy on the weekends, so plan accordingly. They have the best ice cream flavors that you can't always find, from Banana Turon Crunch and S'mores with activated charcoal (sounds weird, but it's so good), to Ube Pandesal Toffee, Ube, and vegan options like the Mango Sticky Rice. The staff is great, and the atmosphere is relaxing and inviting.
I want to share an unexpected nutty pie crust flavor in the Earl Grey Pistachio Pie ice cream flavor. Sweeter ice cream than I expected and I could not taste much of the Earl Grey. Please add more Earl Grey as the base. Service was amazing! Staff were very friendly and helpful. I think the window ordering is cute and fun! I look forward to of and when they bring back the Necessity Coffee colboration. So good. Thanks!
Stella Jean's new seasonal flavors, Matcha Yuzu and Banana Turon, are seriously so good and 100% worth seeking out. I ended up going twice just for the Matcha Yuzu and got a scoop on a cone each time. It's such a great summer flavor, super refreshing with a nice citrus kick from the yuzu. The matcha isn't too in your face either, which I really liked! The Banana Turon was a little harder to track down since it kept selling out, but luckily a friend grabbed me two pints when it restocked and honestly it did not disappoint. Those caramelized turon crunch bits are so addictive, I could easily finish a whole pint by myself no problem. I also tried making a matcha float with the banana turon and the flavors worked together really well, highly recommend giving it a shot. The staff is always super friendly and the service is quick. There's also plenty of seating if you want to hang outside and enjoy the sun, or you can grab your scoop and take a stroll around Carlsbad. Either way you really can't go wrong!
Nestled in a little micro mini restaurant area, this is the first iteration of SJ this far north in SD. Staff is friendly, and of course their pie shop is next door. As far as flavors, love the staples and limited flavors that tend to be more unique than most of the nearby spots. Mango sticky rice is the GOAT and currently in my freezer. The banana turon flavor isn't as turon-y as I hoped, but still good nonetheless.
This was my first time visiting, and the atmosphere here is very lovely and relaxing, such a chill place to hang out. I tried the Ube, Strawberry, Brown Butter, and Mango Sticky Rice flavors. According to my family, all the ice cream flavors were delicious, very natural, and not overly sweet. The staff were friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Parking was also very easy to find, even though the shop is located in a busy area.
Got a scoop of the ube pandesal toffee ice cream which I always enjoy. It is creamy and fluffy and the ube and toffee flavors go very well together. This place is convenient located in the middle of the village and I love to walk here after grabbing dinner at a nearby restaurant. It is a walk-up ice cream place but there is outdoor seating for all of the store and restaurants in area which is great. Usually the service is relatively quick. There are seasonal flavors that rotate but the ube is one of their staples. There are nondairy options which is great but I did notice that a lot of the flavors have tree nuts so if you are allergic this may not have very good flavor options for you!
First time trying their ice cream and, I was amazed with their flavor options. Staff was very friendly and patient even though she was by herself on a Sunday at 12:30 pm. Our top picks were mango sticky rice and the ube toffee. Although all was great flavors but those 2 were our favorites. We also love the outdoor green space with tables and chairs for everyone to share. Highly recommend to try them out.
This location is in a small outdoorsy camp atmosphere, it has a fun vibe. I didn't realize the double scoops were so huge! It took a lot of effort to finish it. The staff told me next time I can get split single scoop so I can try two flavors but a smaller portion. The mango sticky rice flavor was so delicious. It had the right amount of sweetness and tart and the smell was very fragrant from the coconut milk.
My friends and I got to enjoy a satisfying and stomach stuffin Sunday lunch at Texas Roadhouse. After feasting on their famous dinner rolls smothered in their honey butter, eating fried chicken, and getting my hands dirty with their ribs, we couldn't end our time together without having dessert. For some reason, I've been fond of ice cream, so I suggested we find an ice cream spot. I used my trustworthy Yelp app and Stella Jean's was calling my name especially since I had never visited before. Their unique ice cream flavors will be enticing for many palates, but their Baklava Cheesecake and S'mores flavors are why I'd go back. The Texas Roadhouse we visited was in the Oceanside/Carlsbad boundaries, so when I looked up ice cream businesses, the joints that showed were within proximity. Stella Jean's has several locations around San Diego, but the one we visited was the Carlsbad location. We found parking in the Carlsbad Village Shops, but there is public parking in other parts of the area. Stella Jean's is not too far from the Carlsbad beach, it's a short walk from Carlsbad Village, and it's located on Roosevelt Street. While we were walking to the shop, I noticed a collection of similar buildings aka cottages and the painted word "Stella" on one of the buildings, so I knew we were heading in the right direction. As I turned the corner, there were a good amount of people sitting in an enclosed outdoor area that resembled a backyard BBQ without any grills. I really liked sit down area with a good amount of tables and chairs, two trees encompassed by wooden bench style seating, and there was a small trailer business that was closed. Stella Jean's is next to Pop Pie and diagonal from coffee shop Revolution Roasters. Stella Jean's operates out of a building where you walk up to a window to place your order. It's kind of unusual for an ice cream shop to operate out of an order window where you can't see the containers of ice cream or see the colors of the ice cream. There's a sign hanging above the order window that lists the flavors and the pricing. There is a sandwich board where people line up to order that show pictures of the ice cream flavors. What was helpful is that I asked the young man working at the register whether I could sample the flavors, but I did not like his response that I could try some. Well, since I really could not see what I was trying, I should have asked to try all of the flavors. I asked to sample the Baklava Cheesecake and after that first taste, I immediately knew that was going to be one of the flavors I chose. I ordered a double scoop of Baklava Cheesecake and S'mores. My fave between the two was the Baklava, but both flavors were creamy, divine, luscious, and sweet. The chunks of baklava and the components of the s'mores made for a tasty combo. For a relatively warm day, Stella Jean's ice cream hit the spot and was the proverbial icing on the cake or in this case the proverbial cherry on top of the whip cream. If you're having lunch or dinner in the Carlsbad/Oceanside/Vista area, take a short drive to the area close to Carlsbad beach to finish your outing with some ice cream from Stella Jean's. Their sit down area is nice and relaxing to enjoy whatever ice cream you choose, but I recommend you ask to try all of their flavors to make the best choice.
I love specialty ice cream. We tried the Madagascar vanilla and the guava cream cheese. The latter was a seasonal flavor but surprisingly less sweet than I thought it would be. I did try some of the flavors and would have tried more but it was really hot out, hoping to go back and try more. It has a shared area outdoors with tables that also are used by surrounding businesses. Staff was very kind! Pro tip: get a shot of espresso for your ice cream from Revolution Roaster to have with it. ;)

SUCH GOOD ICE CREAM!! I'm lactose intolerant, so it's hard to find good sorbets that I actually like, but strawberry oat crumble was one of the best dairy free ice creams I've ever tasted!!! Also the scenery and building was very cute and beachy, and the service was amazing. I will definitely be coming back! read more

This Stella Jean's is located next to a Pop Pie (same owner, I believe), a fantastic coffee spot, and Shoots, which has great poke. Frankly, these are all great businesses. I like how Stella's always has interesting flavors. All of the ice cream is high quality so I doubt you can go wrong with any flavor. The counter gal was delightful. My only knock is the price. If you get a "split" scoop (basically, a double scoop), and throw in a measly 50 cents for a tip, you tip the scales at $7. I know everything is crazy expensive these days but that just seems pricey to me. The ice cream is delicious and very high quality and you can make the call whether it is worth it. read more

Stella Jean does not disappoint. It's my favorite artisanal ice cream in SD! I tried the new seasonal Greek yogurt with passion fruit and it was so good! The staff was excellent and nice in helping me pick a flavor. Super friendly and nice. Super cute spot in Carlsbad. At nighttime, it's a really cute date spot! read more

TLDR: unique and seasonal flavors, ube and mango sticky rice are standouts. Super friendly staff and good vibes, though parking can be a pain We stopped by Stella Jean's Ice Cream while craving something sweet in Carlsbad. Parking took about 15-20 minutes since the plaza gets busy. The staff was friendly and encouraged us to sample as many flavors as we wanted. The ube was perfectly balanced and not overly sweet (rare for me to finish an entire scoop), while the mango sticky rice had a great tropical flavor that paired beautifully with it. My husband got mango sticky rice and s'mores, and while he thought they were decent, he felt the ice cream overall wasn't anything too special. We both got the split single scoop (two flavors in one cup), which came out to about golf ball-sized portions, small but satisfying, and the server was kind enough to make one scoop a little bigger for him. The shop also sells pints if you want to take some home. Environment was cute and lively, though seating is limited to outdoor tables. Overall, Stella Jean's is a decent stop for creamy, well-made ice cream with warm service, just plan for parking and outdoor seating only. read more

I was able to sample the mango sticky rice and was set after the taste test. Not sweet and excellent flavor profile. Service was excellent. They are ready and willing to help and even offer a taste if you are unsure. Cute vibe in the Village. read more
It was a warm Summer night on July 4th weekend, so of course there was a long line at Stella Jean's - BUT everyone knows it's worth it! People in line were chatting & seemed to have no issue w/ the long, but quick-paced line. The only bummer about that fast-moving line is that we felt rushed once at the front - it doesn't look like you can sample any flavors cuz the ice cream isn't right in front of you, plus the server seemed impatient & hurried when I asked a question. I tried a split single with kinako chocolate crunch & guava cream cheese. My friend ordered the chocolate crunch & yuzu poppyseed cake. When she handed us the orders, she switched them, so I got to try my friend's yuzu & vice versa. I was actually pleasantly surprised - I liked her yuzu better than my guava cream cheese! The yuzu was tart & refreshing, while I couldn't taste the guava too well. We ended up getting 4 quarts - I wish I sampled them all first. The s'mores did not taste like s'mores to anyone in our group, & it's oddly grey. I was also a little disappointed in the mango sticky rice. The mango was very sweet & overbearing, which made the sticky rice almost disappear. I'm not an ube fan, but I really liked the ube pandesal toffee! The brown butter pecan was delicious, as expected; nothing surprising there. Maybe it's so popular cuz of the exotic flavors, or cuz there aren't other vegan ice cream shops nearby. Perhaps cuz of the location - it's scenic, by the beach, touristy, next to a pie shop, etc. Some flavors are great, while others left something to be desired. Suggestion: offer a sampler or a flight! read more
Stopped by this ice cream shop on our way home. Got to try a few flavors of ice cream. Mango, cookies and cream, s'mores, and churro. The flavor were all vey prominent I enjoy the mango one the most because the mango flavor and tartness was just right with the cream. The server was friendly and the serving of the scoops were bigger than what we were expecting. We got to enjoy the ice cream in the open space near by. They had some heat lamps available to stay warm while eating ice cream. read more
I've reviewed other Stella jean's locations but have yet to review this one. Stella jeans is definitely my favorite ice cream place in San Diego. The ube pandesal and baklava cheesecake flavors are unmatched. The texture of their ice cream is unlike any other. I love this location in particular, it's in a cute little plaza with outdoor seating. read more

This is a different ice cream experience. Their flavors are unique and the combinations are original. Their MO is a small window and outdoor seating. I missed the experience of coming into an ice cream shop and exploring flavors. You almost feel rushed to just choose a couple of flavors and pick something to eat when you stand at a window. I also felt that the ice cream was less an ice cream and more a dessert experience. This doesn't take anything away from the ice cream itself but it is very filling and not something I'd want to get after a meal. I got the ube and the creme fraiche and clementine cake flavors. Contrary to what the other reviews say, I wasn't a big fan of the ube, even though I was so looking forward to it. It was a little bitter for my palate. The creme fraiche was decent - tangy and sweet, just like a sweet orange/lemon cake. I tried some of the other seasonal flavors - baklava cheesecake, pandan pistachio and the black sesame and those flavors were definitely not something I wanted to have! I consider this chain to be unique and I'll give them their due. Their ice cream is good, just not something I would like for ice cream. I'll stick to my Salt and Straw flavors :) read more

Cute walk-up, outdoor ice cream shop located in Carlsbad Village that shares its outdoor seating with The Pop Pie Co., Revolution Roasters and Shoots. It's close/adjacent to Le Papagayo Restaurant. Might take a note that these places don't accept cash. There's a parking lot behind this business but parking is challenging. We were lucky to find parking on the street. It was surprising since it was a weekday at 1:30pm. There's many unique flavors of ice creams to choose from and even vegan and gluten free options. We chose Pandan Pistachio and Black Sesame with toasted coconut. These flavors were amazing! So creamy and flavorful. However, we also tried their butter (?) cookie and unfortunately it wasn't a hit. A soft cookie and bland. Nevertheless, their ice cream is worth trying. We're going back! read more

A little difficult to find if you're new to the area and just driving by trying to find it. You need to park and walk on foot to the little area tucked away. I absolutely love all the flavors offered here! Definitely an attention grabber. It's not your ordinary Neapolitan flavors. I'm a sucker for any Ube ice cream so I tried the "Split single" scoop option ($6.75) with Ube + Pandesal Toffee & Mango Sticky Rice. Split single is a good option if you just wanna taste the deliciousness and watch your sugar intake a little haha. They were so creamy, flavorful and complimented each other well. It was a bummer the pandan pistachio was sold out at that time because I would've chosen that over mango. I actually don't eat the real mango sticky rice but I still loved the ice cream flavor though. Next time! Service was also very quick! The girl helping me out was sweet and patient as I wanted to sample every flavor lol. read more
I'm not a big ice cream person. I'm allergic to dairy so most ice cream will kill me or make me extremely sick. I was finishing up a meal with my family at Shoots'(see review) and I saw all the flavors Stella Jean's Ice Cream was offering. Lots of vegan options which is surprising because most places just have one or two choices. Service was mega friendly and they let me try samples of all the vegan options which was generous. I landed on the strawberry and oats, but the mango sticky rice was very close. My family really enjoyed the ube+pandesal toffee which the woman working the counter said was a crowd favorite. My wife ordered the brown butter pecan which she devoured. I think the thing that makes Stella Jean's standout are the unique flavors and the wonderful service. So good! Service was great. It's located in a little food hall. Got the ube + pandesal toffee and the mango sticky rice. The mango sticky rice was gluten friendly and vegan but didn't taste like it was non-dairy. Would definitely come back! read more
Asian inspired ice cream flavors, what??? We were there in a heart beat. The Ube was by far my favorite with the Mango Sticky Rice coming in second. Per the menu board you are sure to find a favorite. The service was friendly and quick. S&J is a walk up window with a faux grass area with table seating. Also there were others cute eating places surrounding so you can get all your dining options filled. This will be one of our stops when we come back. read more

Stella Jean's in Carlsbad is the perfect post-dinner treat spot! The open patio area makes for a great hangout, and when we visited, there was a DJ playing old-school hip-hop--big vibes. I grabbed a chocolate chip cookie (bomb, highly recommend) and my go-to: the Ube Pandesal Toffee ice cream. If you love ube or toffee bits, this flavor is a must-try. It's unique and keeps me coming back whenever I'm near a Stella Jean's. This was my first time checking the Carlsbad location out and I was impressed. Two-double scoops was the way to go for our family of 4. Can never go wrong with Ube Pandelsal toffee and mango sticky rice. And tried a new one - yuzu poppyseed cake, loved it! Service was great and they offer samples. Enjoyed the outside seating area that was a great space for the kids to play and for me to check out the surrounding shops. We will be back! read more
Was craving a sweat treat for dessert and stumbled upon this place since it was down the street from dinner, decided to walk over. There is parking around but it seems like it's in a popular area so parking might be hard. Just a heads up. Staff are friendly and helpful if you need recommendations for flavours but love how this ice cream spot has Asian inspired flavours! Like Ube, Mango Sticky Rice and seasonal Pandan. Tried the Smores and Ube in a split single, which I think is very worth it since you can get 2 flavours without eating too much ice cream. But both flavors were super delicious , smores had that burnt marshmallow taste and the Ube flavor was on point. Great tasting ice cream! And they hit the spot without being "too sweet" IFYKYK. read more
