I love how you can literally ford the Russian River at Steelhead Beach. I waded across the Russian River and found a comfortable tree branch to sit on and watch the people across the river :) People like to bring their beach towels and blankets for the beach, their dogs, and their children because this is a slow-moving river with a shallow bottom. Both the little girl and the dog in the picture I uploaded have their feet on the ground -- it's a very safe and fun place to bring the family. I

I bring my dogs here all the time. You're suppose to have them on a leash and rangers definitely come by, especially during the summer months, so I just walk down the trail about a mile and let my dogs play on a deserted beach. They love it! The water is deep enough year round so they can swim and there usually aren't very many people around so I don't have to worry about them running up soaking wet and jumping on some stranger's towel... Grab some beer/friends/bbq/dogs and head to this beach for a sunny day... guarantee everyone will have a good time...

Ask the Community - Steelhead Beach

Are there still bathrooms here post covid? I've heard mixed things

Yes, I went there a few weeks ago and the bathroom near the parking lot was open and there was a porta potty.

Are their bathrooms or at least portapotties?

Yes, and they are well kept, at least the few times I've gone over the years

The parking lot has about 40 spaces and porta potties, the entire round trip is 3.9 miles. We did about half and turned around so not sure if there was an amazing payoff at the end but we checked and it looks like a smal rock beach where you can chill and hang near the river. Most of the trail you are walking pretty far from the water and there isn't much excitement along the way. At some point it got monotonous so we tried getting closer to the water, these smaller trails are overgrown and the water during Winter is still and smells. I don't know if conditions improve in Summer but I definitely wouldn't go swimming in that water, just stick to the river at the end. Would not recommend coming here in Winter, there are other places nearby that are better.

Sunset Beach is unique because it has a shallow area and a lagoon-like area which is fun for families to float around in safely without fear of being caught in the current. However, just across the lagoon you'll find great access to a medium-fast current perfect for older children and adults who want to float in tubes, then walk back to do it all over again! Hot Tip: Expect lots of company throughout the afternoon because Sunset Beach is the ending point for tubers catching the Russian River Shuttle back to their vehicles. Extra Hot Tip: Please avoid the rope swing. It looks so fun, but ends in tragedy for at least a few people each year, including 2025.

Each site had a fire pit and picnic table, both of which were very clean and well maintained. Sites ranged in size, some good for 1 tent with 2 people and others with room for 3 or so tents. Our site was a little smaller, but had a nice privacy divide and lots of trees. Just across the road and down a dirt path is the campground's private river access. It's about a 3-5 minute walk depending on how much you're carrying. The beach is super rocky so it's a good idea to have water shoes and a chair. We enjoyed going for a swim here and sitting out watching the water and wildlife. We stayed in a site closer to the front of the campground and River Road, so it was a bit noisy with the cars going by, but we were prepared for this and brought earplugs, which really helped. They have a regular/family section as well as an adult only section. The adult only section is further back in the campground and noticeably quieter, though it is further from the restrooms. Another major plus was the dishwashing station! They had a 4 compartment sink equipped with soap and sponges. This was so conventinet and made cleaning up a breeze. I booked our reservations with Chris a few months prior to our August stay. The booking process was super easy, you do have to call in and will likely receive a call the next day, so plan to call when you know you'll be by your phone! Would absolutely come back here since there's so much to do in the area and it really is a nice and clean campground.

Burke's canoe trips is pretty straight forward, two to a canoe (usually), always wear a life jacket (even though being able to swim is a necessity to go), and be sure to finish before the last bus leaves. They always make sure to tell everyone all the proper safety measures before they grab the canoes and even though we do this yearly it's always good to get a refresher. I also appreciate that they now have helpers on one particularly difficult turn near the beginning of the path haha, a lot of people used to tip over there (which I felt like was half the fun but I get some people not being happy to fall in that fast and then have to chase their food as it floats down river). They will also hold your keys up front where you pay so you don't have to worry about losing them while on the river which is a big plus in my mind. Some additional things to note is that they have showers and bathrooms for you to rinse off and change in once you've completed the journey. This is honestly something we love doing (floating people who clog up the river sometimes aside) and we can't wait to come back again and keep bringing more people.

The campsites aren't quaint, but they easy to access with a car and there are decent hot showers. The canoes were in good shape and everyone is nice. The bus pick up at the end was nice and we didn't have to wait at all. Special thank you to Linda who tracked down my misplaced tent and was very concerned that I get it back. The sign at the end of the trip is not super obvious. You will pass by a bunch of restaurants on the right side of the river, and then the Burke's ramp is up a small side arm. You'll probably be tired of paddling at this point, so you'll be looking for the exit.
