If you want to do some canoeing/kayaking in the Guerneville Sonoma area, you can try SOAR inflatables or Watertreks Jenner. At first, I set up a time for SOAR and kept changing it. Eventually, I just canceled it to go to Jenner and have the Watertreks experience, which I think was more suitable after all. I would want the kayaks instead of those SOAR canoe thingies I don't like. Also, Jenner is awesome! There's a small island to kayak around and there's a beach to kayak to. You park your kayak and hop onto the land masses. It all can be done in 2 hours. I was out for an hour and a half and that was enough. The water is not deep. I got out at 9:30 AM. The staff were so friendly, nice, and cool. Jenner is a "blink of an eye" and you might actually be in Oregon or Washington. This is Jenner, California! A hidden gem to visit.

On Jun 27th, I called the company the day before looking for a last minute kayak rental for one person. I had no clue how it all worked but Johnny was super patient and provided answers to all my questions. I was camping at nearby Willow Creek and he asked what time I was looking to paddle stated that they did a "taxi" service (in a kick-ass limo) from wherever you decide to park you car for any 1-way paddle and he will bring you back to Jenner, where his parking lot business is located, to launch your kayak. The launch site is located at the mouth of where the Russian river meets the Pacific Ocean and a great place to start since you will see sea lions swimming in the river and there's a cool little island to paddle around and look at wildlife and a gnarly eucalyptus tree on Penny Island. Johnny provides you with everything you need except for lunch and a camera. You get a kayak (1 or 2 person) or canoe, vests, paddles, and a dry sack to keep your belongings free from water. If you forget food, Luckily there is a deli in the store where his parking lot kayak outfit is located. I ended up doing about a 3-hour paddle up the river to the Casini Ranch family campground where I left my car and got to make stops all along the way taking my time and eating lunch. There is no pressure to finish at a certain time and you are not charged by the hour. I highly recommend this outfit if you are near the area and looking for something fun to do.

So cool and fun! Thanks Suki And WaterTreks team for sharing your professional experience of kayaking, teaching us about the natural world around the Jenner estuary, and overall being a first class outfitter. We are already looking forward to our next trip!

Suki and George are a pair of local guides and extremely experienced kayakers. They are great at taking shy beginners and showing them the basics of paddling and controlling the boat. Our tour was four girls and two guys, none of which had ever been in a kayak before. By the end of the day we were all paddling around with confidence and comfort. The tour starts next to the post office of the thriving metropolis of Jenner, CA. Yes that's the name of the town. Did I mention that the post office is a nasty old trailer that's painted rusty pink and looks like it's been sitting there for at least 30 years? I posted a picture on the business info. Park on the back side of the post office in front of the visitor's center. That way you aren't filling up the parking lot of the local businesses. Suki will give some instruction on land about emergency situations and what to do if you fall out of capsize. Then it's in the water for basic training. Once everybody is comfortable, the group goes on tour around Suki's Family island including nature walks, wildlife spotting, padding among seals in the water around you, and lunch. This is a great tour for beginners looking to get their feet wet in kayaking. Water Treks also provides 100% of the equipment including boats, life vests, waterproof pants, waterproof jackets, bottled water, and lunch. I also suggest wearing a wet suit.

The customer service is a little cranky and not friendly but the kayaks were fine and enjoyed paddling around.

From the moment we arrived, the staff set the tone--friendly, relaxed, and clearly used to getting families (and their dogs) out on the water without a hitch. They handed us dry bags, coolers, and a dog life jacket like they'd done it a hundred times--which they probably had. Our six-year-old was buzzing with excitement, and our dog--suited up and riding in the canoe like he owned the place--looked pretty pleased too. The Russian River was calm and beautiful, with just enough current to make us feel like we knew what we were doing. We drifted past quiet stretches shaded by trees, then through livelier areas near Rio Nido with the hum of music and voices carrying over the water. We also saw some wildlife like fish, ducks, some majestic herons. We stopped on a little island for a picnic, skipped rocks, and let the kid and the dog roam like it was their own private world. Coming back, sun-tired and sandy, the staff greeted us with icees. Nothing fancy--but exactly what you want at the end of a good day. We really enjoyed this fun adventure and we'd rent from River's Edge Kayak and Canoe again in a heartbeat.

I ended up asking the owner for some advice on how to get started in the local waters. Kayaking the Russian River is something I've had on my to do list for years. This summer, with the…read moreriver still flowing nicely well in to July, I decided to finally make it a priority for a weekend adventure. In reading, Yelp and other reviews all signs indicated that King's was THE place. I had stopped in the shop during other trips to Guerneville to check out their outdoor clothing and accessories, so I was familiar with them. I had decided on what's labeled as their Trip #2 on the website which is a 5 mile kayak (self guided) from Johnson's Beach to Monte Rio. I called and reserved a tandem kayak about 4 days in advance and was given a few options of a start time. I choose 11 am since we were driving in from the East Bay and didn't want to leave home too early. They were super friendly and helpful when calling and made sure we understood the trip details and were booking the right package for our skills and needs. A credit card number is required to hold your reservation. We arrived closer to 10::30 and luckily found parking on the street right near the shop-I was worried about that on a summer Sunday but maybe getting there earlier helped. The girl who checked us in was super knowledgeable and made sure she showed us a map of our route, which includes a small section where you need to get out of your kayak and walk it about 200 yards around the dam to circumvent it and then launch back in. We were provided a dry bag, paddles, kayak and life vests. They have you walk a few blocks down to Johnson's Beach and they meet you there with the kayak. This year, after the 2023 rainy winter, the river was flowing nicely-we had a mostly smooth paddle down the river. For quite a while we had quite a bit of solitude and it was so peaceful and lovely with the river and redwoods. Things got a little busier towards Monte Rio beach and downright chaotic as we had to navigate hoards of people swimming with no situational awareness of our kayak and others coming through. It was a relief to get past it and get our kayak to the boat launch. You call Kings as you approach Monte Rio to schedule your pick up. They were there for us to shuttle us back to Guerneville within 5 minutes of us leaving the water. I had the most wonderful day out on the river. We saw lots of water birds and turtles and for the most part it was a very serene trip, Highly recommend Kings and would 100% use them again. They know the river well and gave us advice about certain areas and seem like they truly love what they do!

They do this particular tour on nights when there's little to no moonlight since that is when you will best see the sparkling creatures in the bay. It embarks from Miller's Boat Launch near Nick's Cove in Marshall. It's not far from Point Reyes, so if you're spending time at the seashore, this is a magical way to end your day. They begin at 8 with very detailed instructions for your gear and paddling. Between that and then launching the boats in your group, you actually get on the water about 8:45 and return to the dock around 11 pm. It was a windy and foggy evening, so unfortunately, there were no sunset views. But the novelty of paddling in twighlight in to the evening more than made up for that. We had flocks of pelicans flying overhead and once we got to darker areas, the real star of the show came out to sparkle. You can see the bioluminescence light up as you paddle or run your fingers in the water. We stopped a few times along some coves and even saw the sparkles lap up on the sandy shores. We had 3 guides -one leading, one in the middle and one at the back to make sure no boats were left behind. The ride out was a bit choppy but we had paddlers of all levels in our group and everyone did okay. The guides made sure to check in with everyone and we'd count off boats to make sure we all caught up, We got to hear information about the seashore and the surrounding waters and the local creatures. The time flew by and it was such a wonderful, magical experience. If you haven't night kayaked, I'd definitely say to try it once. I hope to travel with Blue waters again and try one of their day trips, While it's important to dress warm and wear waterproof shoes, they do provide dry bags, a waterproof top and of course all the safety gear for your excursion.
