    Steel Wheel Diner

Great food and excellent service We enjoyed the fifties look .Easy to find and plenty of parking.

    The restaurant front

We walked in and sat down figuring it might be a bit as it was pretty busy. Two waitresses (and one had to go to the kitchen halfway through us being there as the kitchen was drowning.) We got to our seats before anyone else in our side of the dining room, but were last to get our order taken. Strike one. Wait staff was openly discussing how the kitchen was overwhelmed in front of diners, which I understand the stress of the moment, etc but it isn't a great look or feeling from a guest perspective. We waited for around 30 minutes give or take (which I don't consider to be too bad). We waited that entire time for burgers that were dry. They served my husband and daughter the same soy burgers we got in high school. Strike two. To their credit my salad was really good but that brings up a point of confusion for us. The menu. The salads are listed as different items in each, for example how Zaxbys salads would be, and yet I received a bowl and was pointed to an open salad bar. So besides bowl size difference (evident from watch an interaction with another diner) what's the point?? Charge for a large or small bowl open salad bar, like??? Also menu says breakfast cutoff at 11, while the doors clearly state they don't open until 11. Again, what's the point? I think it's time to update the menu to reflect very clear changes. It was our first time here but I feel it's evident ownership has changed since those menus were printed. The atmosphere felt a bit tense at least for the staff, but it's super cute decor wise. It gives you that old diner/mom and pop shop vibe. All in all I would not come back. If you decide to chance it DO NOT come at regular times. 11-12 and 4-5. Come at odd times like 1-3. The kitchen cannot handle max captivity as we witnessed first hand so those times might be a safer bet. Lastly, it isn't clear whether you are supposed to wait for a check or for your waiter/waitress to bring you a check. We sat waiting a good 10 minutes just trying to see if they'd bring the check or if anyone went up to check out. Strike three (for me). I shouldn't be held captive waiting for overworked wait staff to have a minute to check me out.

We recently took a group of 14 and they, effortlessly, served us all in a timely fashion. The meat loaf is off the chain good.

I especially like the atmosphere and the history of the house--it has a lot of charm and makes for a unique dining experience. Most of the food has been good, but the shrimp and grits were a definite miss for us. The flavor just wasn't there, and it's not something we would order again. Overall, I'd say this is probably one of the better places to eat in Dayton, especially since there aren't a lot of restaurants in the area that consistently offer higher-quality food. The biggest reason I can't rate it any higher is the service. We've had the same waitress both visits, and unfortunately, she just hasn't been friendly or welcoming. Dining out, especially at these prices, is about more than just the food. You want to feel like your business is appreciated, and we've walked away both times feeling more like an inconvenience than valued customers. That said, we'd still consider going back because the atmosphere is enjoyable and most of the food has been good. I'm hopeful that a different server--or a more welcoming service experience--would make a noticeable difference.

I arrived at 9:55 AM. I noticed that there was a stand with a sign advertising eggs for sale…read more When I asked about that, the staff said that someone not associated with the restaurant sells eggs there. The person wasn't there when I arrived, but I was told that you use a QR code to shop for eggs. The restaurant itself though seems to sell their own jam, shirts, and other little things. Anyway, the bathroom was a single bathroom that was long and a little narrow. The sink is also pretty low to the ground (most likely to accommodate children), and it has paper towels. I ordered the Owner's New Favorite burrito with a side of Hashbrown Casserole, and it took 10 minutes and 40 seconds to receive them. The Hashbrown Casserole is very cheesy, but it was still good. The burrito despite being in a jalapeno cheddar tortilla wasn't spicy at all. I also found it was better to eat with your hands rather than with utensils. Overall, my breakfast was very savory and filling. I did learn upon receiving my check that if you opt to pay with a credit card (forgot to ask about debit cards), there's a 3.5% charge added to your total. Meaning its better to bring cash to this restaurant (which thankfully I had). I didn't notice a sign or anything at the front mentioning this, and if there isn't, I think they really should have one. Last 2 things I'll mention is that there is guest wi-fi here, and if you come to this restaurant on the day of your birthday (and you have ID to prove it's the day of your birthday), you'll get $13 off your meal. In the end, I had a pleasant breakfast experience here.

There aren't a lot of things that I love better than a local unique bar & restaurant with huge…read morespace, swanky decor, and a few nice surprises. Folks come in very casual attire, some arrive in fully formal clothes, and everything in between. It's a really comfortable vibe and that's something that I appreciate. Maybe you do, too? The owners are a couple and chances are they'll be the ones waiting on you, preparing your food, and treating you love a neighbor who came out to have a good time. Locals who I know LOVE it here. The food is always great, and if the have homemade egg rolls, try them. They're amazing! Also, one of the best burgers I've ever had, and among the ways that we're spoiled in Athens, we have several places with GREAT burgers. Seriously. I mean, don't come to Athens just to eat at a chain. Come on downtown and try places like this and nibble around the edges of town for a few other treats. The name is appropriate. It's THE OPEN DOOR in "the friendly city" in a small, pretty, southern town fercryinoutloud. So I expected that and T.O.D. delivered. Well, I ate-in several times and I don't even know if they Door Dash. It's just an expression, OK? This is not the review to take literally. It's still honest. I've had steak, chicken, prime rib, burgers, the aforementioned egg rolls, and a catfish dinner and it was delicious EVERY time. Every damn time. Folks enjoy the drinks here and this place has huge extra rooms that they open when it's warranted. They don't always have enough staff to be like a chain restaurant/bar and they employ some intermittent staff for busy events, so I don't come expecting a hostess type greeting, white linen, and tables set and ready. They're usually hustling to keep up, take care of their guests who are, from my observation(s), usually friends and neighbors and regulars, and a few folks who are just visiting sprinkled-in for good measure. Yet, it's not so local that the player piano stops and everyone stares when you swing through the saloon doors. Well, through the pretty front door and IF it had saloon doors. It's friendly and welcoming without people being all up in your business. If you're feeling like you're in a hurry, take a deep breath and relax and maybe sit at the bar.

Absolutely the best food in Athens. Best hamburger you can find and incredible service.read more
