I brought my Mac book pro in to get the screen fixed after a drop. The man who runs this shop told me he'd check it out. I left it with him and he got back to me later saying I needed to replace the screen. Okay. Used or new? I chose new. It took way longer than originally estimated so long that he had to ship it to me in Canada and filled out the customs incorrectly so I was asked to pay duties as if it was a new machine for sale. But that's not all. The screen installed by Stearns broke and I've come to find out it was not new but refurbished, not installed properly, and the machine was still under warranty at the time of my breaking it (my bad for not remembering I purchased apple care) but I did find it curious when I took it into a specialist the other day and the first thing they told me is that I had apple care. So, an oversight? Perhaps. But considering the complete fail in the fixing and high likelihood the "new" screen was a refurbished. Hmmm. I'll let you guess, but all in all, my absolute worst experience fixing ANYTHING. One nice thing I'll say is the guy gave my kid some toys while we were in his shop (some kind of blow up toy and a hot wheels race car). My wife said she was not impressed when we walked out with the toys and actually thought I'd made the wrong choice going to this guy. Outstanding service! I placed an emergency call to Stearns Business Machines as both my modem and router had failed. Rick was able to come out within 2 hours of my call, and was both knowledgeable and professional. He worked diligently to get the issues resolved, even making a trip with me to the Cox Store for a new cable modem. I am now up and running and I learned a lot of tips and tricks at the same time. Just got unceremoniously "banned" from this place. Was incredibly happy to find this place to fix my roller & get new ribbon. When we came in, we were told we may need parts but he's not sure, he'll have to look at it. He asked where we got and we told him about our garage sale find! He made a comment that it might not even be worth it for us to fix, but he would take a look this afternoon and call us with an estimate. He also said minimum without parts is $79 so the estimate could be pricey. I grimaced but I thought "okay, let's get the estimate and see how I feel..." So we left.... About 4 hours later, I received the "estimate" call. Except it wasn't an estimate, it was "we're just finishing the work and you owe us $90." I was really confused, because I don't remember agreeing to any work being done. So I asked a LOT of questions because it wasn't the original person I spoke with on the phone...but suddenly the realization struck that they had already done $90 worth of work on my typewriter without me agreeing to it. If you take your car in for an estimate, someone calls you before any work is done! I was livid, and kept getting this "ho hum oh well" attitude from the woman on the phone. Finally I get put on with the original guy I spoke with and HE's YELLING AT ME! So, after an angry back and forth of him holding my typewriter hostage for the price of 90 samolians - I told him to take out the ribbon, break it again, and I'll be there. We picked it up, he hadn't reversed any of the work and told us to never come back again. I'm fine with this. I'll go to Kearny Mesa where labor is $35. Don't yell at your customers! And don't do work without giving TOTAL COST first!!!! read more

My drop-off went fine. When I arrived at 9am on a Monday to pick-up, nobody was there. I waited 45 minutes until somebody showed up because I had driven nearly an hour to get there. The repairman opened and acted like everything was normal. I asked if they always open so late and he said "no, I'm the morning guy and today I'm late." He took my money and told me to come again. I said I would not be returning and that I had waited for 45 minutes. He responded, "how was I supposed to know that?" I told him it shouldn't matter if I waited for only 5 minutes he should have apologized. He said "well you should have said something" Umm no sir you should of said something, and that something is "I'm sorry." I left annoyed and came home to use my typewriter, only to find that some of the keys are sticking. Not a happy customer! read more

Violet and Rick are awesome! My hubby found a beautiful 1944 Remington typewriter and they brought it (and its case) back from the dead for a fair price. It works perfectly and looks amazing! I called Rick at Stearns to fix my Asus computer which froze on me one day. He was very pleasant on the phone as I described what was going on & he said bring it on over. So I did. He called me right away to explain what he had found (possibly the hard drive but I can probably fix it with out replacing that) and he gave me the quote of $275 which I approved and he fixed it. Delivered it the next day to my office, set it up, explained & showed me what went wrong with the computer & made some other recommendations. Very helpful, very cordial. He spent over 2 hours in my office why I don't know (besides waiting for the printer drivers to upload) and charged me an extra $200 for that. Then..... the next morning the computer somehow was turned off, so I powered it on & then it froze on some black screen with F2 or F8 instruction. I pressed those keys, nothing happened. Great, is my wireless keyboard bad too? I called Rick, he came right over & picked it up. He called later to say we have to replace the hard drive after all. What?? why didn't you do that the first time if it was that close. Ugh, okay go ahead. In the meantime, my assistant is without a computer and I've lost production time, I have to drive home to pick up my lap top to use. Bring back my computer the second time, do the set up, re-install printer drivers, again nice & cordial. Paid the second bill. Then... the next morning again it froze on another screen. NO WAY THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING again. You're supposed to be the computer tech & fix this. So he picks it up a THIRD time. Again, production time lost & I'm starting to lose faith in his skill level & ability to fix my computer. So no phone call for 2 days, then he shows up out of the blue, drops off my computer, plugs it in & runs. No explanation, no reason, no nothing. I was out of the office so I called him & asked what's up? so what was it this time? He said the brand new hard drive was defective so he installed another brand new hard drive. Luckily he didn't charge me for this 3rd fix. But in addition to the lack of customer service & notice on the 3rd try, the frame around my computer is all scratched up like he took sand paper to it. I asked Rick what happened. His explanation was, "Oh it fell off the towel on my work bench. Oops sorry, my bad" That's all you have to say? If I hadn't called him he never would have brought it to my attention or apologize or nothing. Not sure why he turned on me so fast. The computer is working, thank the lord, but so strange why his behavior changed so drastically. I've already paid him so there is no recourse for the scratched up computer. I'll never use Stearns Business Machines again & neither will any of my friends or clients after I explain this experience. read more
