The restaurant is in a beautiful old Edwardian two-story shop on a corner. Entry is via an easily accessible side door. Upon entry, there is a small counter to your left where you are greeted and then promptly seated.
The restaurant has an eclectic clientele which includes young singles out on a date, families, friends, footballers, and anyone else who enjoys a good steak. The atmosphere is warm, friendly, and busy.
We were served promptly with the waiter taking our drink order and then giving us a few minutes to decide on our meals. The menu is quite extensive featuring several options in terms of cuts and sizes. Considering this is a steak house, the menu also offers a wagyu burger, a chicken breast fillet dish, chargrilled salmon, lamb loin chops, beef and pork ribs, and a well-portioned vegetable platter of two kebabs with grilled mushrooms, capsicum, and zucchini with grilled pumpkin fried onions and a baked potato if you are vegetarian and somehow end up in a steak house for a friends celebration or event. The menu is also supported by a very good selection of wines and beers.
Ordering our food was quick and efficient with the waiter offering sauce and accompaniment options as we went. For clarity, the waiter read back our orders to confirm all was in order.
Our food was delivered promptly and fully which is always a bonus when all members of your party get their meals at the same time. Our party of five ordered a ribeye on the bone, two black Angus eye fillets, one medium, one rare, one and a half racks of pork ribs, and one rack of black Angus beef ribs. All meals came with an option of chips or baked potato and a sauce. I ordered the pork ribs with a bbq sauce.
All steaks were cooked as ordered. My ribs were delicious and were falling off the bone as ribs should be. I am glad they offer 1/2 rack options with the ribs as I struggled to get through my meal, two racks would have been way too much. For sides we ordered two dishes of char-grilled vegetables and one dish of baked asparagus. All were delicious.
Judging by the empty plates, all party members were happy with their meals.
We finished with desserts consisting of ice cream with port (port was added by request), chocolate pudding, and a sticky date pudding. The pudding serves were a good size and they were delicious.
Overall, we were happy with the food and service although once you have your mains wait staff become very scarce. To order additional drinks we had to flag down a waiter... no real issue.
One small complaint. We were seated across from the entrance. It was a cold and windy evening and every time someone either arrived or left the restaurant which obviously was quite often, we would receive a blast of cold air through the doorway. Most people entering or leaving the restaurant didn't close the door behind them which meant you had to wait for staff to notice the door was open and then close it. I must say they were good at keeping reasonably on top of this issue however it would make good sense for them to install an automatic door closer.
Anyway, putting aside my petty little whine, this restaurant rates up there as one of my favorites. Reasonable pricing for good food served quickly and efficiently is the reason I keep returning to this little Essendon gem.
If you are local, a meat lover, and desire good food and prompt service, this is the place you should come to satisfy your appetite.
