Sometimes a gem is found purely by accident as was the case when I visited the Gisbourne area…read morerecently and stopped by Pitruzzello's. Centred in wine country this olive oil and wine vineyard boasts a modern restaurant and conference facility as well as the plant for making their extraordinary wines and oils. The owners have really done their homework and kept their grape varieties limited to the soil type found in the area. This has produced some superb whites and the dry white I had with my meal was worth the trip. Local fresh produce utilising many items grown on the property made for a special experience and the friendly staff went out of their way to make this visit a special one. For me and mine this is going to be a regular occurrence in the future.

Which ever side you chose though, be assured that you will receive fantastic service and delicious food. Dining Room This is where you head for a special occasion dinner or if you enjoy fine dining (with matching prices.) It is a perfect anniversary type affair. For my everyday dining needs though I find it too pretentious, but I'm more your quirky and casual type anyway. Options include duck and ocean tasting plates and Angus beef fillets. The food is suitably well considered and you can select your wine to match your meal from a varied list. It is a fantastic fine dining experience. Bistro The bistro is more my speed. Casual setting but same great quality food, in fact many dishes from the restaurant are mixed into the bistro menu. The menu here retains style but includes family friendly options such as pizza, but amazing pizza. Every single dish on the menu is first rate delicious I'm not a fan of televisions in restaurants and this one is no exception. Va Tutto offers great, no fantastic food and polished service. It is extremely popular and people cross Melbourne for certain dishes. So book ahead, this restaurant stands out among the varies dining options in the Ivanhoe precinct.

Best. Butter Chicken. Ever…read more I hate to say it, but the problem with Indian takeout usually is the hygiene and cleanliness of the place. Not so at the Ginger Club. First impressions last, and you should be impressed with the fully glassed exterior, and clean and crisp interior. You can dine in or take out, which is great for when you can't be bothered looking half decent to sit in for a meal. And for the quality of what you get, the prices are cheap! Average mains cost around $11, and you can grab an entree for $5, bargain!! You also need to try out the chicken masala and lamb saag, mouthwatering!! Best place in or around Broady for authentic, quality Indian food.

The second thing worth pointing out is, for some unknown reason, Northcote has an unusually strange fixation with Thai restaurants. Why there is such a prolific concentration many is unbeknown to me. The Red curry is good; it has balance as all good Thai does. However, it seems to be westernised, with too much coconut milk and less red curry. I'm still after that style in which the coconut takes a backseat and the flavours of the red curry prove strong and dominant. Tom yum soup is on the dime, and the various salads offered pack that punch of flavour, yum, and zing. In a biased review, and perhaps, unduly, an extra star is earned on account of the cbf'ed walking factor and convenience of locality to my house. Good for take-away, quiter as a dine in venue.

I love tapas bars, and Carino's is about as good as it gets. It's the unique quality of this…read moreSpanish cuisine that makes Carino's stand out. If you're a little unsure of what 'tapas' actually means, it's a Spanish word, and indeed tradition that translates to a 'wide variety of appetisers' in English. If you make Carino's your first foray into tapas, you'll make a very wise decision. The Popitos, (spiced pork medallions with wood roasted peppers) and traditional Spanish dish Paella al la Escorza are to die for. Individual tapas plates start from just $6.50, or do what I do and get a combo for around $25. Tapas is meant to be shared to be enjoyed, so take a date and share between the two of you - how romantic!

Carino's has been reliably serving tapas for a few years now. It's a welcome change in the area from the variety of ever changing pubs and Asian inspired restaurants. There's quite a bit of table space here, street side, front of the venue and some outback space. The staff are friendly and helpful, which was really appreciated as we had a large table. It was never an issue ordering extra drinks and meals. The table ordered a variety of tapas, from bread and dips to jamon on bread and pulled pork sliders amongst others. I didn't quite get the sliders and spanish tapas combination. The sliders came out rather large. The calamari style dish came out a bit soggy and underwhelming. The chocolate accompanying the churros had a distinct powder taste about it. Next time I'll be trying out the flan. Overall it's a nice suburban restaurant, more suited to small groups and date nights.
