Absolutely appalling experience…read more I purchased oysters from Conway Fish Trading on Christmas Eve after being personally recommended to shop there. When opened on Christmas morning, the oysters smelt strongly of rotten feet and were completely inedible. I froze them so I could return after the public holidays. I contacted Conway's on Tuesday 6 January and spoke to Mary, who was unbelievably rude. She laughed at my complaint and said they "sell thousands" and that no one else had complained. I left my details and was told a manager would call me back -- that never happened. When I called again on Thursday, Mary answered and immediately put me through to Demetris. His behaviour was disgusting. He raised his voice, bullied me on the phone, and said my complaint was "so ridiculous" that he couldn't be bothered returning my call. This was over a dozen oysters costing $22. I referred to Australian Consumer Law, which provides consumers with rights to a refund or replacement for faulty goods within a reasonable time. Demetris flatly stated that Australian Consumer Law "does not exist" and insisted oysters must be returned within 24 hours -- meaning Christmas Day, which is completely unreasonable. I was then told I had stored the oysters incorrectly and that they should have been removed from the bag and covered with a wet tea towel in the fridge. This information was never provided at purchase -- no verbal advice, no signage, no leaflet. What started as a recommendation has now turned into the opposite. Instead of standing behind their product, they chose to treat a customer with hostility and contempt. As a result, I am now actively warning others not to shop here. For the sake of $22, Demetris has effectively paid for significant negative word-of-mouth and poor reviews. I strongly recommend going elsewhere -- Queen Victoria Market or South Melbourne Market offer fresher seafood, larger oysters, and far better customer service. I will never shop here again.

The seafood is good and the pricing is good. The service can be lacking (eg, 8 people behind the…read morecounter doing things but no-one serving or acknowledging customers). But that being said, one of the guys who served us was really friendly and noticed that no-one else was paying any attention. A huge selection of frozen seafood and a wide array of fresh whole and filleted fish, squid, prawns, smoked fish and live crays.

Quite disappointed given the rave reviews. My steak came well done, I ordered medium. It had a…read morebitter taste I wasn't expecting, and was anything but tender. The mash was so dry, and very heavy. It was chewy, and certainly not light and fluffy as it should be. Frankly it tasted like they just added water from a packet. Don't get me started on the water like, bitter peppercorn sauce. Awful. I didn't finish the meal in the end. Getting the attention of the wait staff was nigh on impossible, pleasant as they seemed. It's rare that I don't tip staff but I didn't interact with anyone beyond someone dropping the food in front of me and never coming back. Food did come out very quickly and the onion rings were ok, crispy, but still very greasy. The ambience in here is a bit weird. Families, work groups, noisy, dark, and decor like you're visiting your auntie Kay in her front room. I've not been checked on in thirty minutes. Might be something to do with the awful table tucked against a wall.... I definitely wouldn't recommend eating here. Maybe two years ago it was good, maybe I got it on a bad night, maybe it just sucks. I'm going with the latter. There are plenty of other options sound Melbourne to eat. This one definitely wasn't worth the $30 taxi ride out here from the CBD.

This was actually a pretty decent pub, particularly with the choice of beers they had on tap (being…read morea number of decent craft beers). It seems to be more focused on being a restaurant than a pub, though the front section is more of a bar (though they tend to have high tables and stools, which I'm not all that fond of). There is also a nice beer garden, and it looks like it has been recently done up, which is also pretty cool. Mind you, the beer garden is designed mainly for smokers so unfortunately there is no food out there (though that may have changed). However, I still quite liked this pub, though it did sort of lack a uniqueness that sets it apart from a great pub.
