Steak 'n Shake used to feel like a cozy, classic diner, but now it feels no different than a fast-food chain like McDonald's. The large cheese fries were not very large and were lacking in cheese, though when I added the seasoning it was a nice touch. The garlic steakburger was nothing special. The onion rings were decent and nicely crispy. The milkshake was disappointing--whether it was a mistake or not, it had only three pieces of topping and tasted more like a plain vanilla shake. got up to the window after about 30 mins after placing my order... got told they had no soda and no birthday cake milkshake... ok fine... got up to the window and the guy is falling asleep behind the register... he looks high out of his mind. They are back, and different This Steak 'n Shake had been closed for an extended period of time, this was my first visit since they reopened. I like Steak 'n Shake and had been sorry to see it closed, I thought for good. Glad I was wrong. Today for lunch I had their Original Double Steakburger with Cheese Combo, and it was excellent. The burger was tasty, the thin cut fries wonderful, the shake I included for an upcharge delicious. Thin cut fries are my personal favorite. The shake was straw drinkable and not so thick that you needed a long handled spoon (which they did give me with my meal). The burger, where I added their signature mustard relish, was good greasy. Very pleased with the food. Gone was table service by white dressed servers with their black bow ties. Gone was ordering at the counter, too. There was a sign saying you needed to use a kiosk for both dine in and to go orders. I'm not a big kiosk fan, telling someone what I want is way more efficient than trying to enter it on a series of screens. I do admit the screens were easy to use, and I worked my way through it without too much stress. There is a tip screen when it came to paying if you feel like giving extra for no service. Went inside and ordered at the kiosk there was one other table occupied, so not busy. Waited about 20 minutes for the burgers and fries to come out. The shakes didn't come out with the food. We ordered cheese fries and the cheese had gotten so cold by the time it was brought out it has a crust in it. We were still waiting on the shakes. At 30 minutes after the order time on the receipt we asked about the shakes. By now we are the only ones in the place. They told us they would be out. Soon. Finally came out at 40 minutes from order time. The entire time no one else came in and no drive through customers. It was 5:30 pm, not like it was late at night. First time we have been to this Shake n Steak since their remodeling. Dine in orders are done via a Kiosk . Staff mostly behind the back and grill area. No table service at all. Menu items basically the same as before. Your steak burgers, chicken tenders, fries, onion rings, etc. The milkshakes are still one of the best around and served in their large frosted old style glass. They spent an entire year remodeling and made very little positive change except for driving away all the amazing servers they had years ago... the drive thru is always so slow, even if you don't order shakes, fries are rarely even warm, and often get home to find something missing from the order. Sad shell of a formerly good restaurant.... only giving 1 star because the food that we were able to get was decent. First off you order on a kiosk with no human interaction or clue as to what they are out of, which is where the issues began... We ordered 2 burger combo meals and a chili 5 way. We go get a table and clean off 1 of the 2 dirty highchairs for my daughter and the go get our drinks..an employee comes out and asks about for order #101 which was ours and proceeds to tell me they are out of noodles and asked if I'd like to get something different, to which I said no thank you and just to cancel it and he says the manager will have to do that. We get our food (much longer wait than would've been expected as there was only 2 other tables and they already had their food) and I again ask the employee if they took it off the bill and he says "she'll have to do it when she's done with milkshakes". We proceed to eat our dinner and finish up I go to the counter to have someone fix our check and a second employee drops a to-go order on the counter and starts to walk away and then turns back and asks" do you need something" which I tell her that we need the chilli 5 way taken off our check and she again offers me something else , to which I tell her we have already eaten and don't want anything else, just to take it off our check. She then says the have a no refund policy and she will have to talk to her manager,which she spoke to on the headset (supposedly) and tells me they can't do anything. The only reason I did not put up more of a fight at the counter was because I was with my mother and18 month old daughter. This is completely unacceptable and we will not be returning. The manager never came and spoke to us or anything. Had I known they were out of the chilli 5 way I would have never ordered it (only ordered in the first place so my daughter could eat some pasta and shredded cheese) and had I known there were no refunds I would've canceled the whole order from the start. I would put zero stars if I could. We haven't been in our local steak n shake in a few years and after Covid, they did a remodel. Today, we decided to stop in before shopping and boy were we disappointed. No counter help, you have to order from a kiosk. The soda machine is locked behind your qr code on your receipt and you no longer get free refills. We got 2 combo meals which meant 2 drinks on our receipt and that was all we were allowed. Not even a single refill. There is no longer any waitstaff at all. The food was not good. I had added mustard on my burger and there was more of it than the actual meat. I very much enjoy steak 'n Shake it is not located near my home but when I go to Walmart I always stop in there and buy my family dinner tonight I came by at 7:23 PM and ordered $40 in food when I got home it was correct on the receipt but none of the food was correct in the bag. I have never been to a Steak & Shake where they didn't screw up my order in some way. If you want your order made like you order it, go inside at one of the tables. If you order from the app or at the window, odds are something will be missing. Today, Oct 29, 2019 I ordered two different burgers, 1 order of onion rings, and 1 order of Cole slaw via the mobile app and I also paid via the mobile app. I received 1of the burgers, the onion rings, the Cole slaw, and an order of fries (that I had not ordered). This isn't rocket science. The receipt on my app had the correct order. The paper receipt had the correct order. The bag, however, did not. Yes yes, I know I should have checked the bag before leaving the drive thru window. But I did not because I needed to get home before traffic gridlock started. Besides, I shouldn't have to double check the accuracy of FOUR frikkin items in a BAG. I drove home, unpacked the food, called the restaurant to tell them a burger was missing and that fries miraculously appeared. Since it's a mobile order and paid via mobile, they cannot refund any money even if I went back to the restaurant in person. So now SUPPOSEDLY my name is on a list to have the burger comped the next time I come in. Do you believe there actually is a list? Or that my name is on it? I do not.
