What an awesome late night stop. Had an incredibly long day of travel and other not so pleasant events and saw this down the street from the hotel. Nothing like a great burger and fries at 1am. Never had Steak N' Shake before, but this place made me a believer. Burgers are very tasty and come in a ton of different ways. That seasoning for the fries is crazy addicting and thankful bottomless. Milk shakes are as good as they get. Service is good, even in the middle of the night. Most importantly, the prices cannot be beat. Will probably never be back to Effingham as long as I live, but I will be back to a Steak N' Shake! read more

Steak and Shake is one of those quintessential Midwestern places that you have to go to, and so on my trip to Effingham it was our first stop. The best thing about this place was their service: speedy, cheerful, efficient. The worst thing about this was the shakes. Total letdown. If you have shake in your name, your shakes should be tasty. They tasted like watered down soft serve icecream. And not even the good soft serve ice cream, the kinda crap kind, with the texture that's just a little bit off. The food was decent. I had no complaints of my chicken strips and fries. Mom said her burger would have been better if they had let the fat drain off the patty for a minute before putting it on the bun and making a fatty (but tasty!) soggy mess. Wow, this place is hopping.!!! We walked in the door and only one table was available! Every employee was busy as a bee and everyone of them had the brightest smile including the chef.!!! What a wonderful place to eat.!!! The food didn't take too long to get to us, we figured it would with all of the customers, and was delicious too.!!! If I was the owner, I'd be very proud of the staff tonight, they weren't expecting a baseball team among the other groups of friendly gatherings, they handled everything with a beautiful flow of friendly and timely service.!!! Place was filthy. They need to clean it. Food was good and pretty fast service. Customer service very good. Somewhat clean restroom. Food was made to order so it felt fresh. I do like their shakes. Good place to stop but u have watch ur step to numerous spills on the floor. For some reason it was not clean. Overall good food for reasonable prices. read more

Bad customer service and attitudes. I ordered here at 9:30 and the person in the drive through had a grimace and was nonchalant. I was looking through the drivethrough because my order was taking long and I seen them taking their sweet time. They didn't give me a receipt either. We have been to several StakeNShakes. This is the cleanest one we have seen. Also the most friendliest. We try to go during the off hours It is been so crowded at times, I don't know how the folks working there can keep up. My hat's off to them! read more

Even though they were busy, the staff was very attentive and the food came out rather quick and everything was correct.

The food is fine, better if you really crave a cheeseburger at 6am, but ordering breakfast at breakfast or lunch at lunch and you will probably get a half slipped together semi mess of a burger through drive-thru. Also prepare to wait because they are sloooooow. The inside isn't too bad service wise, and you're good is put together much better. However go during the day when they have more customers and you'll be greeted with floors and pretty much every other surface looking like it's in desperate need of being cleaned. This is the best Steak n Shake experience I've had in a long time. Our waitress was fast and friendly. The food was good. All the employees were friendly. Our waitress actually came back to check on us. I almost gave up on going to Steak n Shake ever again. I'm glad I tried this one. I wish they were all this good. I've always been scared of Steak n Shakes and avoided eating at them at all costs. I finally broke down, or was out voted and succumbed to a steak n'shake lunch. Not so bad. I had a special sandwich with chicken bacon, pepper jack cheese and some honey mustard sauce thing. I should have gone for the whole taste experience but I passed on getting a shake of my own. My companion was nice enough to share his and now I know that I will have to get a shake of my own sometime in the future. All Steak 'n Shakes are not created equal! Haven't been to a Steak 'n Shake since I left a one star review about the one in O'Fallon, Illinois. We stopped at this one in Effingham on our way home from Pennsylvania on Sunday, August 18, 2019. They were very busy but we got a table right away. Our order was taken and we received drinks and then food in a timely manner. Everything was hot and good. My husband ordered his beloved chili Mac. It was hot and he received a shaker of his favorite Romano cheese and crackers. He ordered a double steak burger and fries as well. All hot and good. I ordered a patty melt and it was excellent - so much cheese and so many onions. It was very good! All servers and workers were busy. As soon as a table was empty it was cleared and ready for the next customers. No complaining workers. My only complaint was the small table out in the middle but it was all that was available. The manager at O'Fallon, Illinois Steak 'n Shake needs to call manager of Effingham Steak 'n Shake to find out how to do it right. read more

Another road trip stop. Went in for an early lunch. We were one of the only tables there. The beau and I both got veggie melts with frisco sauce on side. His brother got a skillet breakfast thing. When he saw pork in it but didn't see it on the menu when he ordered, they were nice enough to switch it out. Our waitress was very friendly and checked on us often. Even made sure I had a to go tea. I don't like the food, but it is the most popular fast food in the area.... It's somewhat clean and average.

We ordered drive thru 2 butter burger with fries and a pkg of onion rings and 2 shakes. The fries and onion rings were at the bottom of the bag with the burgers on top. The steam and heat made the fries and onion rings flimsy, wilted, oily and just plain awful. The burgers were as if someone dunked the buns into a basket of oil that was dripping outside of the bag. The bun had disintegrated with slimy cooked onions everywhere. It was not edible. We got a fork to just eat the burger patty and a fork could not cut thru it. The fork could not pick up the double patty with stabbing it as it was hard as a rock. Shakes were runny and the window person could not tell us if the Strawberry was real strawberry or not. Our daughter left her camera on the table when we were passing through from Canada to Houston, Tx. The manager, Becky was SO KIND and packaged it up and sent it back to us in Canada free of charge! She really made our day and my daughter was so thankful to get her digital camera back soon after we arrived home. Thank you to Becky and we love Steak n Shakes. Was driving back from Florida on I 57. Had a taste for a Steak and Shake burger. Went through the drive thru and it was surprisingly fast. We got back on the highway and started to eat. First of all I should have left the second I heard the worker's voice. I could tell right away she didn't want to be there. Placed order and she did not repeat order (that would make too much sense). My fault for not checking but got about 5 miles away only to notice that my order was wrong. Went back and waited I know at least 5 min before anyone would wait on me. When one of the workers decided to see what I wanted, I started to explain and right in the middle of me talking she started waiting on another person. When I walked away she noticed I was upset and then left the other people to come back to me. I told her no, go wait on those people that's rude to do both of us that way. I had to flag down the manager and lets just say she really didn't care much either. My order was corrected but I left feeling I will never return. I understand things happen but we need to make sure the customer knows they are sorry for the mistake and if the the management doesn't seem to really care, then I don't want to spend my money there. We want good food but the service you get is also very important. We all have bad days and don't want to go to work but that is not a reason to treat your customers that way. Remember customers are the reason why Steak and Shake employees have their jobs. read more
