First time here and we absolutely loved it! We stopped by around 9pm on a Saturday night, not too busy and the staff here are very friendly and helpful. Washrooms are clean, plenty of dining tables, self-serve drink area that's well stocked with napkins, straws and other items. We had a double cheese steak burger (all dressed/the works = ketchup mustard onions pickles lettuce tomatoes) and a garlic cheese steak burger (any garlic lovers must!!!), side of shoestring fries and onion rings. Optional sauces ots for $0.50 each: Frisco (similar to thousand island dressing), ranch, buffalo, BBQ, and more! There was a weird 'nugget' looking thing in our basket... dont eat that - it was weird and uncooked like raw batter/dough? Anyways, we are Definitely adding Steak n Shakes to our road trip stops! We stopped here on our way from St Louis headed towards Chicago. We waited over 30 minutes and when we asked for a status update, we were told there was one order ahead of us then ours would be ready. Shortly after we were given food - not our order and almost cold. The restaurant and the drive through were not full so they weren't even that busy. So here's my advice - think again before choosing this Steak 'n Shake. You can do much better. read more

Just watched a worker go into the bathroom with rubber gloves on and come back out with the same rubber gloves on. Therefore whatever he did in there he left his gloves on and didn't wash his hands. Had a bad experience with an older woman. She was rude to me when I was trying to order and would NOT listen to me when I tried to explain to her MULTIPLE times that I would have to enter my passcode in order for Apple Pay to work. She took my phone and attempted to use other cards on my device without asking me. I waited over five minutes for her to finally figure out she had to give my phone back to let me enter the passcode even though I was trying to tell her the whole time she was just completely ignoring me. Looking fir a place to sit, we chose the cleanest table, but still had to wipe it off with napkins. I've had more fast food in the past 3 days than in the past 5 years (when you are cross-country road-tripping with a dog and a cat, it is not easy to do sit-down restaurants). This meal has been the highlight of my Fast Food Fest! I ordered a combo for 4$- the double cheeseburger had long, kosher pickles and fresh onions. The fries were the skinny shoe string kind! I got to try the cookies and cream milkshake and it was delicious- full of Oreo cookie bits. While I would never mind paying more for restaurant experiences, this place truly satisfied and fit our constraints. To me, I think Steak n Shake is pretty overrated in terms of the full experience and honestly if i had the choice I probably would have once again went to a Chipotle. Upon our first night on the open road we came into this spot with everyone talking up how magical the place is. I'm all for a nice burger and shake so I tagged along- just wish I would have gotten either. I went with the prime burger that had Frisco sauce on it, which came with fries and ordered a diet cola. The main problem with it being so busy was that there was a delay between order and meal, so we sat and talked with our stomachs adding more chatter along the way. The food was OK. I understand new food places get a lot of credit quickly but my main take away from this was the burgers are about as thin as the chances of me coming back to one of these. Burgers should at the very least let you taste them and feel them in between the bun upon bite- not this. Fries were standard, even though the metal holster barely had any in it. Oh my gosh! I took my grandchildren there yesterday. It took us 22 minutes just to be able to order, funny there was only one car in front of us. We ordered 2 kids shakes and 2 adults. After all of that time waiting they got it wrong. How hard is it to take an order correct and what was holding up everything. This place is horribly run and disgusting. Management was blatantly rude to customers while they where trying to order just to deter them from ordering so she didn't have to cook more food. Bathrooms were the nastiest public bathrooms I've ever been in, entire bathroom smelled like someone pissed all over everything and floors and surfaces were all sticky. Every single toilet seat was on the verge of falling off and toilet paper and trash all over the floor. Whoever is in charge of this restaurant should be fired immediately. We were driving cross country from LA to B'port and halfway we passed by numerous 'Steak 'n Shake' locations. My desire to make this trip as quick as possible, and avoid any sightsee urges, made me withstand the temptation to stop to try this franchise before I would leave the last one behind me in the Midwest. However eventually I became hungry, tired, and frustrated that the trip would take another 16hours, so I gave in and decided to try it out. The restaurant has a nice interior, the service is friendly and quick. The burger was, despite of the good taste, a little bit to greasy for me, and they might consider serving more fries with the order. A decent 24hr place, were the interior looks better than the food tasts. read more

Came to this Steak and Shake during a long drive to St. Louis to pick up some food. We got seated and served pretty quickly despite it being a full place at the time. Our server was really nice, friendly and courteous. The food was made and arrived quickly and was none the less delicious. The royal steak burger was phenomenal as well as my Cajun fries which in my opinion is my favorite thing about steak and shake. Will return in the future! read more

The parking lot was packed and it didn't look like there were any available seats inside so we just went through the drive-thru. I got a foot-long hot dog, my husband got a steak burger that was on the 4 for $4 menu and our little guy got chicken and fries. I also got a Oreo shake and our son got a vanilla. The food came out really fast. I was pretty impressed by the speed, but not by the crabby guy running the window. What a grouch! I didn't realize it until we got back to the room, but I was never asked (and forgot to tell them) what I wanted on the hot dog so it just had mustard on it. It was actually pretty good and I'm not a mustard fan. The only problem was that the bun had split so it was hard to eat. The fries were lukewarm at best which was really disappointing since the hotel was right across the street. They should have stayed hot. My husband complained about the size of his burger (too small, still hungry!) but he probably should have gotten something not on the value menu. The shakes were good and our son enjoyed his chicken. It is your typical Steak and Shake which just happens to be located at a major junction of Interstates 57 and 70. As such, this place is generally busy. BUT, I must say, the waitstaff here do very well. They hustle about, make sure your drinks are kept full, orders come to the table quickly, keep the place clean and they even managed to get the shake out "before" the meal comes. I was out of town (in beautiful mid-western Effingham, Illinois) for work and LO AND BEHOLD there was Steak n Shake across from my hotel. After eating twice my body weight in classy, tasty food at Firefly, I rolled myself over to Steak n Shake because I could. They were one of the few places open 24 hours in my home town (and located in the parking lot of another - Wal-Mart) and I spent many a weekend night as a teenager being obnoxious and eating steak burgers in those booths. So, far from Buffalo (my current home) and far from Sarasota (my home town) I managed to feel at home, sipping on a mint cookie milkshake. I don't know if I can be totally honest since I get all mushy and poetic about how S'n'S makes me FEEL down in the depths of my cold, cold heart, but I think they are pretty tasty for a national chain of cheesy diners. I'll start out by saying Steak & Shake is one of my favorite restaurant chains - but this particular location lacked everything I appreciate. First of all, there was no one to take your order - only kiosks; with tipping in advance as an option. No, thank you. I have never stood in line to place my order at a Steak & Shake, nor do I want to. The food came quick enough, and was brought out by a pleasant young man. There were no condiments on the table, so we had to go searching for salt, pepper, napkins, ketchup... My favorite entree is the single steak burger. I like the simplicity of it - no cheese, with fresh lettuce, a slice of onion, and a crisp pickle. My burger was the total opposite of that. The bun was soggy with grilled onions, so of course what few, tiny lettuce pieces I had were wet - and they had included cheese. Steak and Shake has a typical diner feel. It is home to many drunk kids getting drunk food (and I'm sure they have kids getting hangover food, too). the prices are super cheap. For three people eating burgers with fries, our bill was around $13 total. I was slightly disgusted because there was a group of drunk kids who ate at a table near us and one of them puked on the table. This was my first time at Steak 'n Shake. I had heard rave reviews about it so when my hotel ended up being right next to one, I pounced on the opportunity. The place has a diner feel to it and it kind of like a short order grill meets a fast food burger place. The lady taking out order was patient and answered all our questions. I opted for the minis which consisted of three sliders and a fry. I tried the chipotle, Cajun, and garlic varieties. Then got the garlic parmesan cheese fries. Did not get a shake but they looked delicious. Everything was made fresh and right in front of you. The burgers were very good and I felt like would be much better had we gotten a full size burger with all the fixings. The fries weren't awesome. They were kind of dry and over cooked but the seasoning was good. I will definitely try the place again and I WILL try the shakes. read more

I'm giving this 2 stars because of the service we received on our last 2 visits. The last time we ate there, Tues., November 5th, we were seated promptly and our drink order was taken quickly, as is usual. Everything went downhill after that. While our orders were finally gotten to us as ordered, we had to send our waitress back 3 times to get it correct. Granted not her fault as the kitchen staff made the meals. However, it is the server's job to be certain everything is correct when she brings it to us. We had to flag the waitress down multiple times to ask for corrections to our orders, extra napkins, and a spoon with which to eat the large milkshake my daughter was served instead of the small she ordered. Last, but not least, we had to wait and wait to be checked out as the staff seemed more interested in palling around than waiting on their customers. The visit previous to this one, we had an employee whose job was bussing tables and mopping floors. She also made it her job to continually annoy us while mopping next to our table by her constant complaining about how tired she was, how much she wanted to go home, (she had 1 hour left on her shift), and how desperately she needed someone to go by her a drink. The food here has always been top-notch. We make many trips to Springfield as we have family in the area, and have made this our go-to meal choice when making the trip back home to south-eastern Illinois. The service has almost always been excellent, until these last 2 visits. We will eat here again, but if the service continues to be sub-standard, we may very well find a new go-to. read more

OK, so we had been on the road for 5 hours, skipped breakfast and were starving. We hit Effingham and didn't want fast food but didn't want to go to the one trendy restaurant in the whole town because we didn't have the time to spare. Hello Steak and Shake! I hadn't been to one in over 15 years and wasn't thrilled that this appeared to be our best option. Well shame on me. This place made my day. Maybe it's because we were all hungry but we all opted for the $4 menu and lordy, lordy what a screaming deal! I had a double cheeseburger, hubs had some cheeseburger with hot peppers and daughter had the American style foot long hot dog. All came with their good, super thin french fries. For $12 you can't do much better. Their large drinks are huge and I like to pretend I'm a teenager in the 1950's and ask for Diet Coke with vanilla syruup. Heaven. The food came out super fast. Washrooms were decent adn the place was clean. Plus the waitress we had was exactly what I would expect at Steak and Shake in Effingham.
