What a joke! My last visit was over 20 years ago and had fond memories. BUT I must not understand the new NO CUSTOMER SERVICE policy at this restaurant. It took us several minutes to figure out how the order system works and when we asked for help, we were told to keep trying. After we figured out how to enter our order, we attempted to get our drinks and had to ask how to use the soda machine only to be told we needed a security code that was on our receipt. This place is unsanitary. Ordered a double but got a single. After eating almost half my sandwich I noticed this. Took it back and cook said no problem and just added someone's else's burger from grill while leaving my half sandwich next to grill. No refills on drinks. Horrible service. Came here @8pm (they close @10pm) and went through the drive through. No answer. Drove around to look inside thinking they just closed early. Then I see 2 boys walking from the gas station back into the restaurant (the workers.) When I came up to the door, they were locked. A nice gentleman let me in. We both agreed it was intentional that the doors were locked. Apparently they both decided to take a break and close up early even though numerous people were trying to get in the restaurant? Then a 3rd guy appeared who was cooking, I didn't see him walking from the gas station. On the last occasion the woman on the speaker apologized for the wait as only two people were working and then proceeded to scream at the top of her lungs into the mic. We promptly left. I had been on the road for twelve hours and was looking to stop on the western side of Indianapolis for dinner. It seemed that almost every exit had a Steak 'n Shake and who am I to argue, so I stopped. I've eaten a great deal of Steak 'n Shake burgers over the years and thus I consider myself a connoisseur of their food items. I found the dining area to be clean, bright and open. The hostess who greeted us at the door, Jessica M, was extremely friendly, professional and efficient. She seated us and took our drink order. When she returned in nothing flat with the drinks, we gave her our food order. It didn't seem to take long for the food to arrive at the table, the food was as ordered and delicious. The bathroom was also clean and well maintained. The paper towel dispenser provided an adequate length of paper towel for hand drying. It was a wonderful eating experience and the waitstaff was tremendous. read more

When we go the the window I asked a question "which one is tea" the lady didnt answer again I asked which one was tea the lady said rudely that you ordered a large diet so the other o e is tea. As fond as I am of Steak 'n Shake's food, I disdain going to this location. The quality of service - always rendered by teens lacking in listening ability, social skills and preoccupied with entertaining each other instead of minding the store, is consistently dismal. Tonight, however, I was most pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed by the quality of service I was delivered at the drive-up by a gray-haired Asian-American gentleman. He greeted me most courteously, attentively took my order, confirmed with me it was correct, and when I picked-up and paid for my order at the window he was very gracious, wished me well in a very convincing manner, and even expressed to me his hope I would make a return visit to Steak 'n Shake again sometime. Ok, so we all know that Steak 'n Shake has had a hit or miss reputation the past several years, most of the time being a miss. My hometown location in Mooresville had shut down for a while and has recently reopened. Me being relatively new to Brownsburg, decided to give the local location here a try. I was very impressed and reminded of the Steak 'n Shake of old. The lady at the drive-thru window was very kind and had a consistent smile on her face. Just gave off a cheerful vibe. Last minute decision for Mrs. Funk and myself to have a Steak n Shake Burger and Shoestring fries on a busy Thursday evening. The joint was not too crowded so... Simple and tasty doubles with cheese and the works, nice slice o'mater and onion with a crispy lettuce topper...it actually looked like the pic on the menu! The shoestrings could have been hotter but it wasn't a showstopper. Some H2O's with lemon and cups of coffee to finish, all served up by a fine and efficient young fellow. Steak N Shake has long Indiana roots even though it is a national chain. It has served as a place that Grandpa takes you as a kid, late night drunk food as a young adult, and a cheap family breakfast as a parent. I am a fan of SNS because I can feed a family of four dining in cheaper than any other breakfast establishment - drive-thru or eat in. Yet, since everything is cheap, I always seem to order more stuff! C'est la vie. Last visit saw the chocolate chip pancakes! Highly recommend. They also make their eggs cooked to order and their hash rounds are very tasty with a little bit of country flavor. They also have breakfast sandwiches, but compared to the plated meals and especially the all you can eat pancakes, they are not a good value. However, when it comes to the drive thru, the breakfast sandwiches are very convenient, but I have never done the drive thru at this locale. Steak N Shake's service is cook to order so it is slow. Hard to believe, but the beef is actually raw before you order it, so it takes little while. And you can take my word for it that the eggs are actually in shells before they cook them, so serving them up takes a few extra moments than your average quick service place. The hot, hot food is well worth it. Especially for breakfast. I recommend eating in at this location for the service. Cheers! read more
