The trainer was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He demonstrated all movements in a way that was easy to understand and he was patient with members when they had questions. All the members were warm and welcoming. The structure of the class was clever. We did some interval warm-ups, which had twenty-five seconds of work and twenty seconds of rest. The movements included mountain climbers, bird dogs, plank holds, push-ups, and other movements. Then we did five pull-ups and ten tricep over the head extensions. Then we did some mobility work-things like lunges, cossack squats, hip rotations, and arm rotations. After that, we did bench presses with a pause at the bottom and single-arm dumbbell bent-over rows. Then we did hip thrusters and farmer carry's and we finished the workout with some barbell bicep curls, some high band side steps and some sled pushes. My muscles were definitely feeling the burn at an increasing rate as the class went on. If I had to nitpick then I would say that there wasn't enough time to complete all of the movements and the gym is small. I imagine the gym would feel crowded if there were more than five people attending a class. When we got to "event #3," which included the barbell bicep curls, high band side steps, and sled pushes, we were given only seven minutes to complete it. Because it's important to stretch at the end of a workout, I respected the time cap on this section. But, I think there should have been a time cap on all three events. That would have prevented us from feeling rushed at the end. Go check this place out! I would like to come back and try one of their kettlebell classes.

Initial impressions just trying to find the place and walking in were not what I was expecting. If you are used to walking into a Lifetime Fitness with tons of equipment, throw that idea away. Michigan Kettlebells is tucked into a small commercial and storage complex. Once you walk in, you will see this is a large renovated garage and sets the mood for the workouts to come. You will learn to love it. There is a wide variety of people who attend. Classes generally have 10-15 people in them and have a 60/40 mix of men to women. Age ranges from ~16 - 60 years old across many different skill levels from beginners to marathon runners. Everyone is very supportive and a great crowd to workout with. The workouts are different every single day I have attended, but maintain the core principal to increase general strength and fitness. This is done through Kettlebell training in additional to raw,"backyard" type of workouts such as tractor tire flipping, sand bag lifting, push ups, pull ups and everything in between. Craig, the primary instructor, is very knowledgeable and an overall great guy. His wife, Dawn, holds female only boot camp classes on Sunday which my wife attends. She is loving those as well. A third trainer Derek, is another great asset to the gym. All I can say is do yourself a favor and check this out, I am happy I did.

If you are super competitive this might be the place for you. You can earn splat points, try to stay in the red the longest of the group or compete with yourself in the app. I think this is an amazing place for all levels of fitness. They have really innovative ways to keep members engaged throughout with gifts, pajama days, workout hell week. The coach's are helpful. If they see you doing something incorrect they will assist. The music playlist is pretty good! It's loud so you will have to put your listening skills to use, if you can't sweat, run, row and listen. This might not be a place for you. Another cool feature they have a really awesome functional app. You can purchase merch, see your progress & schedule your next class! Also you can see what new contest or themed week is coming up and participate. Now weird encounter today. I've been here for a month. I've been to different orangetheory's, people let me record since I'm a blogger and I'm strategically only recording myself since I'm far off to the corner. It was two coaches today on the floor & the floor coach talked to me quite a lot and she seen my phone and didn't say a word... until after the class. ‍ I get it but like other places didn't say a word. I would also assume common courtesy of not recording random people while working out, that's just weird. But example I'm on the treadmill (it's pretty high) so the camera is only on me. Even if someone walks behind me you can't even see their head. I'm on the rower and you can on see me and the wall. I have over 50k of followers and I usually record my workouts at gyms since I go so many places. Definitely won be posting this one. So if you want to record this isn't the place Troy specifically! Which again is totally understandable, people usually don't bring their phone in the workout area,. They pride themselves on 60-90 minutes without your device, which I'm sure everyone could utilize. I would say go into the nearest location to see what promotions they have. If you don't see anything you can always use this code: 2DTUCC

It's definitely tough but every exercise can be scaled up/down based on your fitness level. I think the gym opened about 7-months ago so the equipment is brand new, including Concept 2 Rowers, racks, bars, plates, slam balls, etc. It's always neat and tidy and they offer child care as well (always a plus). My wife and I have been training here for the last 3-4 months and have already seen great results. My wife has never been keen on lifting weights but Ryan (owner/head trainer) is amazing... he's very knowledgeable, welcoming and he has really helped her get out of her comfort zone. She's getting stronger, leaner and more confident every workout! I've worked out most of my life... traditional weight training, powerlifting, various group classes like spin, HIIT and CrossFit... I feel like I've finally found my home away from home at PURE MVMT. Ryan's programming is top notch - he does an fantastic job mixing up the workouts. We never over-index on a particular muscle group and I love how he blends strength training and cardio into his intervals. I've been burning 800-1000 calories every class! While it's a newer gym, there's already a strong sense of community. I credit Ryan for this as well... it's obvious he wants to create a comfortable environment for all fitness levels and his attitude and openness is contagious. I exaggerate only slightly. When I decided that enough was enough, I gave this studio a call. They just opened in March '08 - since it's so new, I was able to snag a package discount (10%) and get to work out in relative peace with my trainer. The space is new, wide-open and minimalistic, with all of the newest gadgets that usually intimidate the hell out of me. I don't really do bigger gyms at all and have worked with a personal trainer before, so I was happy to find one close to home. There are a few trainers on staff right now. I have been working with Brad, who seriously kicks (my) ass. The workouts have been tough for this little marshmallow, but I feel so great after just about a month of sessions and can definitely perceive a difference. He is certified and has a background in sports med (kinesiology? I haven't gotten into it) so he has a physiologic approach to my workouts that I appreciate. I've seen the other patrons getting their butts kicked by the other trainer there, too. Yeah, it's spendy. It's a commitment. It's worth it to me, because I am just not one of those people who enjoys the gym or is self-motivated enough to even get there. And it works! Activity always does...

I've been to another instructor's class once or twice but found her to be slower-paced so I mostly stick to Michelle's classes. I also realized that it was one more excuse that I didn't need to avoid exercising. A long time ago, I had a really good experience with a Personal Trainer, and decided that was what I needed to do. I came across Retrofit Studio reviews here on Yelp, sort of accidentally. I liked what I read from the reviews & their website. I liked the idea of a private studio too. I called Brad & set up a consultation. There is no doubt that Brad loves what he does & wants every client to be successful. He spent a lot of time listening & talking to me about realistic goals, nutrition, and what to expect. He decided to set me up with Mark, one of his trainers. So far, I have had 8 training sessions with Mark. When Brad said he was a good fit for me, he was right! My sessions are 30 minutes, 2 times a week. By the time I leave, I am a sweaty mess! Mark challenges me, makes sure I have good form, and always encouraging. If I don't do it right, I have to do it again. Every session varies to work different muscle groups, especially the areas that are difficult to target. As hard as he makes me work, I'm never too sore to exercise in between our sessions. That is important to me because I need to do my part outside of our sessions. Mark checks with me regarding my diet and what I'm doing to reach my weight loss goals between our sessions. I always have fun training with Mark even when it's really difficult. The studio itself is great. It's very clean, doesn't smell funky like a lot of gyms (ha!), and a great variety of training techniques & equipment. There are a few cardio machines for client use before or after a session. Every trainer is always encouraging clients, whether it's their client or not. What about results? I started to feel stronger right away and continue to feel that way. I'm steadily losing weight & seeing the jiggle disappear! My muffin top is shrinking! I asked my husband if he noticed any changes. The poor guy looked at me with slight fear of answering the wrong way. ha! I wanted an honest answer. I don't expect fast results, but I am curious if the changes I see are noticeable to others. He said that he has seen a big change. He said I have been a lot happier since I started training with Mark. I wasn't expecting that answer & it made me realize I haven't felt that way about getting in shape (or trying to) in a long time. It sort of made me all verklempt! This is one of the best decisions I've made in a long time!
