Additionally, for long-standing members, there should be some flexibility -- such as a limited number of exception waivers for circumstances like illness or family emergencies. That would demonstrate consideration for loyal members. Cleanliness is another major concern. The showers consistently smell moldy, and there is often visible hair around the drains. It genuinely makes me question how frequently they are cleaned. The lockers are also frequently dirty, and the towel fringes are falling apart. At this price point, members should feel comfortable using the facilities. The women's bathroom soap dispensers are often empty or not functioning -- which is a basic expectation for any gym, let alone one at this cost. In terms of the gym experience itself, I will say that the classes are enjoyable and the instructors are kind, motivating, and professional. That is the primary reason I continue to attend. However, it would greatly improve the experience if reformer/Pilates classes were separated by skill level. For members who have attended multiple classes, it becomes repetitive to hear the same beginner-level breakdown each time of how to use the machine, etc. Offering stratified levels would better serve both beginners and more advanced participants, ensuring everyone's expectations are met. Parking is also an ongoing issue. There are frequent times when no spots are available, and members are forced to park next door. While I understand that occasional overflow can happen, it seems to occur more often than it should. This overcrowding appears to be exacerbated by the gym offering repeated five-day free trials to individuals who have already used one! Try finding a treadmill to use on a Saturday morning! While I understand the importance of growing the business, maintaining a quality experience for existing members should be prioritized -- especially when space and parking are already limited. Lastly, the café, while offering nutritious and high-protein options, feels overpriced for what it is. The recipes could also be improved for taste and overall value. I am not trying to be overly critical. I have been a member of several other gyms in the past, none of which cost this much. With a premium price point come higher expectations. I genuinely hope these concerns can be addressed, as I would like to continue enjoying the positive aspects of the gym without ongoing frustration.

They've made some updates the past few years including an area that goes beyond your typical equipment - along with the class offerings that go with it. But their women's bathroom is in desperate need of an overhaul. The doors don't close all the way (they are hanging poorly and the lock doesn't fully reach across), the stalls are so dated, it isn't always clean - it feels very institutional. They need to reinvest in their equipment - having already started by updating their free weights. I'd like to see better maintenance on their aerobic machines upstairs. No pics allowed - I'm a strict rule follower when it comes to that one.

I was working out today and at around 6:50 pm, I was deadlifting. I am an intermediate lifter, so not the world's best form, but not abysmal either. The owner (didn't know he was the owner at this point) who was in an Anytime Fitness shirt told me "slow down" in an aggressive and annoyed voice. I had no idea who he was, so I asked "what" and assumed he was trying to help with form or give a tip, instead he doubled down on his rude tone so I told him to mind his business. This must have set him off because he very angrily said "mind my business? This is my f****** business" and took a step towards me. After that interaction, I told him it would be my last day and he said something to the effect of good / I don't care. I would have absolutely zero problem with him telling me to slow down if he was polite or was trying to give me a tip. I'm an intermediate lifter (was deadlifting 205 pounds), so I've deadlifted the same way many times at LA Fitness and other gyms and had absolutely zero issues. At the same time, the owner appeared to be in good shape, so if he wanted to offer a tip I would have gladly accepted. I've been weightlifting for about 18 months now and have absolutely zero issues with any other gym, including gyms with trainers and other patrons. I was in the same gym a few days before when someone was deadlifting 300+ pounds and slamming it to the ground and no one said a word. Bizarre interaction going from zero to 100 and my advice would be to take your money elsewhere if possible.

The trainer was friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. He demonstrated all movements in a way that was easy to understand and he was patient with members when they had questions. All the members were warm and welcoming. The structure of the class was clever. We did some interval warm-ups, which had twenty-five seconds of work and twenty seconds of rest. The movements included mountain climbers, bird dogs, plank holds, push-ups, and other movements. Then we did five pull-ups and ten tricep over the head extensions. Then we did some mobility work-things like lunges, cossack squats, hip rotations, and arm rotations. After that, we did bench presses with a pause at the bottom and single-arm dumbbell bent-over rows. Then we did hip thrusters and farmer carry's and we finished the workout with some barbell bicep curls, some high band side steps and some sled pushes. My muscles were definitely feeling the burn at an increasing rate as the class went on. If I had to nitpick then I would say that there wasn't enough time to complete all of the movements and the gym is small. I imagine the gym would feel crowded if there were more than five people attending a class. When we got to "event #3," which included the barbell bicep curls, high band side steps, and sled pushes, we were given only seven minutes to complete it. Because it's important to stretch at the end of a workout, I respected the time cap on this section. But, I think there should have been a time cap on all three events. That would have prevented us from feeling rushed at the end. Go check this place out! I would like to come back and try one of their kettlebell classes.

Initial impressions just trying to find the place and walking in were not what I was expecting. If you are used to walking into a Lifetime Fitness with tons of equipment, throw that idea away. Michigan Kettlebells is tucked into a small commercial and storage complex. Once you walk in, you will see this is a large renovated garage and sets the mood for the workouts to come. You will learn to love it. There is a wide variety of people who attend. Classes generally have 10-15 people in them and have a 60/40 mix of men to women. Age ranges from ~16 - 60 years old across many different skill levels from beginners to marathon runners. Everyone is very supportive and a great crowd to workout with. The workouts are different every single day I have attended, but maintain the core principal to increase general strength and fitness. This is done through Kettlebell training in additional to raw,"backyard" type of workouts such as tractor tire flipping, sand bag lifting, push ups, pull ups and everything in between. Craig, the primary instructor, is very knowledgeable and an overall great guy. His wife, Dawn, holds female only boot camp classes on Sunday which my wife attends. She is loving those as well. A third trainer Derek, is another great asset to the gym. All I can say is do yourself a favor and check this out, I am happy I did.

I'm honestly pretty upset with how Lifetime as a brand has changed. Customer service? Gone. The feeling of inclusivity? Gone. It's like they no longer care about their members. I get that they're saving some money by not being open 24/7, but it's still a huge letdown. We've tried the Canton location multiple times, but there's always something broken or out of order. So we went to the Troy location, only to find that our family membership doesn't work here--only Novi and Canton. After upgrading, my son, who loves basketball, was disappointed to see that half the courts are now taken over by pickleball. Now they're even getting rid of basketball courts altogether. When I asked, I was told that "basketball doesn't make us money." Isn't that why we're paying $275 a month for a family membership? Today, after upgrading, we got kicked off the basketball court within an hour because of some family event. Apparently, they have arts and crafts tables in the gym on Saturdays. We were told we could come back after 8pm, but why did we drive 55 minutes from Ann Arbor for that? There's other space they could've used, but I'm guessing that's being rented out for more money, while the members are pushed aside for things like pickleball. Honestly, the Las Vegas locations are great, but the Michigan ones are a mess. I've been harassed since day one at Canton. It's frustrating because, just like 24-Hour Fitness, Lifetime is drifting away from what made it great--caring about the members. Eventually, I think they'll learn, especially when they start closing down locations, just like 24-Hour did. I just hope they realize that the people--the members--are what keeps their revenue flowing. Plus spend some money on this club first, everything is old and falling apart..... Maybe one day, pickleball will fade out like racquetball did. But until then, here's an idea: Troy could convert those racquetball courts into basketball courts. That would actually make sense!
