I remember the days of going to the office full of "specialists" downtown when I was younger. All I ever had was slightly blurry vision and glasses that never fit right. I've been seeing Stavros Petrou for at least 20 years now, and he's helped me in many ways, including saving my eyesight from blindness twice. For whatever reason, my eyes leak cells sometimes, and that causes cloudiness but can also leave me blind if it's not resolved. He immediately sent me to a specialist the first time, where I was given drops, and the second time--at least 10 years later--he gave me the same drops I had used previously, saving my eyesight again. My prescription has always been perfect. The one time I wasn't happy with the lenses that he received from the manufacturer, he sent them back and got them fixed right away. My glasses last. I've replaced them three, maybe four times in the time I've been visiting his office. My problems are always resolved, even on the busiest days. I'll be very sad if I ever have to change optometrists. read more

I moved into East Danforth this past summer, had my first appointment with Dr. Petrou last week. His office is small, with just a tiny sign outside. But that doesn't matter, what matters for an optometrist, at least for me, is (a) competence, and (b) friendliness. Dr. Petrou had both. It was just a simple eye exam, but he was patient and explained to me what was going on with my eyes (I got 0.5 dioptres worse over the last year, which has me very concerned), explained what I can do to slow the degeneration, and discussed my glasses, contacts, and the possibility of laser eye surgery. (Not an option: they want to see stability for 2 years before considering it, so that you don't get the laser surgery only to need glasses again in a year.) Anyway, we discussed my options and then he re-ordered my contacts for me; same brand as I was already using, so that was nice. His secretary showed up late so when I got there for my morning appointment, he was answering the phone (in Greek!) and scheduling appointments himself. He seemed to accept this with a sort of patient resignation; I get the feeling it wasn't the first time it had happened. Anyway, this is not a flashy office, and most of the patients seem to be older, but I would highly recommend giving Dr. Petrou a call. read more

Vision is one of those really important things that we take for granted. My experience with this shop started one morning a couple months ago when I became worried that my contact lens was stuck/disintegrated in my eye and couldn't be removed. Although I hadn't been there in over five years - they told me to come right in. Dr. Stavros inspected and determined that I was fine. When I walked out - I fully expected to be handed a bill - but they said there was none to be had. What a solid and ethical practice. They helped me out when I desperately needed it and didn't charge me a dime. I figured the least I could do was go back for a eye exam. So I booked one; showed up two weeks later, was taken on time; and boom 20 minutes later had a new prescription. I don't have a health plan, but the $65 (I think) exam fee wasn't a big deal especially considering the piece of mind knowing your eyes are fine gives you. A couple of months later, I needed a copy of the prescription so I could order a new set of contact lenses. I called and they said to come in. They reprinted it for me again without charge or fuss. Overall this place deserves five stars and two thumbs up. read more

He took the time to explain what he was doing and answered all questions with a very personal approach. This guy knows his stuff and is a real people person too! If you need a simple eye test and there's nothing wrong with your eyes, this is the OD for you, especially if you like to save money!! Dr Petrou is a nice man but my husband and I were patients for many years and for the last several years, the Dr seemed to be going through the motions. Three years ago, I pointed out that due to squinting, I was getting LOTS of wrinkles between and above my eyes... He suggested nothing to help. I guess a woman of a certain age should just accept her fate! (wouldn't there be some sort of stretch I could do with my eyes...any ideas at all? I recently bought multifocal lenses and they seemed to help. However, Dr Stavrou simply told me, "some people like them, some people don't". I had to figure out the multifocals myself, and that wasn't easy: but no more reading glasses now!! and I hope, less squinting) My husband (we are both in our late 50s). He is interested in improving his eye strength and avoiding wearing lenses and glasses, if he can. He asked Dr Petrou for suggestions on exercises or otherwise: no response. 18 months ago, Dr Petrou told me that I have the beginnings of macular degeneration (MD), which eventually leaves one unable to read or drive.... He asked if I smoked...I said yes: cannabis. He said "well", and left it there. No suggestions for follow up...such as seeing another Dr for a second opinion, or an opthamologist. No suggestions for vitamins, although I learned on the internet that they CAN be helpful. I felt that because I am a "naughty" pot smoker, that was my fate...a moral judgement. Well, happily, I took a course on ageing eyes at the Ryerson Life Institute...the teacher was a retired professor of vision at York U. She gave me the name of another OD...one w lots of equipment and who did a special test on me ( a third party comes to his office monthly for this) and guess what: I do NOT have macular degeneration. I am NOT going blind!!! My mother was diagnosed with MD in her late 80s...what a bad upset it has been over these 18 months to think that I was getting MD 30 years before my Mum. Well, I'm not going blind yet, by a long shot. You get what you pay for!! read more

Great optometrist - relatively painless to get an appointment, no unreasonable wait past appointment time, takes time to diagnose/explain everything. He's cut a pair of lenses for a pretty difficult frame (high curvature), and the office has a small-ish but very decent and good quality frame and sunglasses selection. read more

Dr Stavros is by far the best optometrist I have ever seen in Toronto! (No pun intended) A real gentleman who is completely thorough with everything he did to help me see again!His receptionist/assistant is awesome too!
