Our son started taking drum lessons at Staump Music School when he was 4 years old. Now at age 11, he has learned to play a wide variety of musical instruments including the electric guitar, bass, keyboard and ukulele. Our son who is now 11, has been enjoying his lessons from Mr. Wes's Jr. Rock Band classes since January of 2020. Once the pandemic hit, luckily he was able to continue his lessons through zoom with Mr. Wes. Then finally, when it was safe enough, he was able to join back with the in-person lessons with the whole band! Since then, he has been loving it, and progressing so well. His change in instruments had nothing to do with the instruction, as he always wanted to try percussion instruments. As a musician with studies in classical guitar, I was reluctant to have my child receive lessons when I believed I was capable of teaching her. At first it started as something to occupy my free time, but the longer I stayed the longer my love for music flourished. I started out too scared to sing aloud with anyone in the room and here I am 6 years later performing in front of hundreds of people regularly because of the support I recieved from all the teachers. I took lessons here for roughly a year and a half so I wish I could write a positive review, but I really can't. If you're lucky enough to get to take lessons from Tim maybe they're good quality, who knows. I wasn't lucky. I wasted a lot of time and money here on poor lessons that had no emphasis on fundamentals. A year and a half and I can't even separate my hands. My lessons were unorganized and time was often wasted on other things. When learning a new song if I got to a part that was difficult, instead of helping me through it my teacher would normally just rewrite the part to fit my current level. All that did was keep me at the same level. It didn't help me at all. I wasn't being challenged or properly taught. The teaching style was get you playing a song as fast as possible, not properly. Beware of this style of teaching. You will never grow from it. I have since found a new instructor and my lessons are like night and day. In just two lessons he has already started fixing many of my issues. He got me playing doubles and triples in about 5 minutes by turning my wrist and loosening my grip which I was never able to do properly in a year and a half there. He's always checking my wrists and making sure I'm playing properly. And in my second lesson he had me playing a complex rhythm with triplets on the double bass. He also helped me slowly break down a snare pattern that I could never get and had to abandon in my lessons at staump and it actually made sense the way he took me through it. He's helping me understand rhythms and make my own. I never would've gotten that if I had stayed there. My only regret is that I didn't leave sooner. They were also ripping me off charging for concert fees in my monthly price that I asked to participate in but was never allowed to. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. It took me way too long to realize that I wasn't bored with drums or frustrated with myself, my lessons were the problem. read more

Tim Staump taught me how to play percussion beginning way back in 2000 and on through about 2006/2007. I took private lessons off and on through middle and high school. He is a great guy, incredibly talented, and really knows his stuff. I was curious if he was still around, took to Google, and here he is, still making music and teaching kids - and now making a true business of it. He is a great guy and was a great influence on me, and I am very happy to endorse him as a great music teacher for people of all ages. I always felt safe and respected and he was incredibly patient even though after years of playing I still couldn't keep myself from rushing the beat forward haha. Tim and Maria Staump are the owners with Tim being a professional drummer and musician and Maria being a professional singer and musician. Lessons are very reasonable and follow professional musical teaching standards and guidelines. We had been attending Recreational Music Center but then switched over to Staump. We missed the Diversity in the teaching staff and students at RMC but switched over to Staump in Santee because it was closer to our home and was also cheaper(at the time). We had been attending Staump on a bi-weekly basis for about the last two years until recently when they switched over to the "TeacherZone" model. At first, this sounded like a better way to connect teacher with student. We were told by the teacher to go online and register and then be able to set up our lessons on the website. There was never an attempt to follow up with us after that. I finally got hold of someone through email and they told me to fill out the registration form-which I did. Then, I was told that we would have to sign up for the full monthly schedule because bi-weekly or individual lessons were no longer prioritized. They referred me to other schools. I felt like after two years there, they did not care to lose my son as a student. Also, I can honestly say that our experience with music teachers at other schools demonstrated a higher enthusiasm for my child's talent and a deeper personal commitment to helping him reach his full potential. I would recommend shopping around before deciding on this school. read more

Last year I decided to put my son (7 years old at the time) in private drum lessons, but I wasn't too sure if it was a good idea at that age. My son is a typical young boy that gets distracted easily, but Wes is awesome at keeping him on track. Before the drum lessons my son had a definite interest in drumming but didn't know how to play, now he's learning to read the music and is starting to actually play. Eventually my oldest daughter seen how much her brother was enjoying the lessons and decided to join the beginner guitar class with Rachel, and can't wait until the next class begins. I waited a little while to write a review and I'm glad I did because now I can comment on the fall concert they did at Greenfield Middle School. The concert was nothing less than awesome...incredible...WOW. Staump is not a music school, Staump is a school of transformation.
