Your instructor, Olga, publicly criticized my child in front of other parents and children. My child is neurodivergent. At times, he may have difficulty following directions, transitioning, or completing more complex instructions. That does not give any instructor the right to shame, embarrass, or publicly criticize a child. What is especially unacceptable is that your staff was already aware of my child's needs. Instead of speaking with me privately, giving me a warning, or trying to understand what support he might need, Olga chose to criticize him in front of others. When I brought this concern to you, I expected the owner to at least investigate what happened and listen to both sides. Instead, you immediately defended your instructor and treated my child as if he were simply the problem. You did not appear interested in understanding what actually happened or in finding a constructive solution. Instead, you joined in criticizing my child. Then, rather than addressing my concern about how your instructor handled the situation, you suspended my child's classes for an entire month. Children--especially neurodivergent children--deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. If a child is struggling to follow instructions, the appropriate response is to communicate privately with the parent and work toward a solution, not publicly embarrass the child and then blame him when the parent raises concerns. Parents should know how situations like this may be handled here before deciding whether this is the right environment for their child.

At the end of 10 weeks lessons, my son is able to play Ode to Joy on guitar and my daughter plays 4 different pieces at the recital. I'm very happy with their progresses and will continue to sign them up for lessons. So very glad to find this place. The place is very clean and adhere to covid protocols. Looking at the "then and now" photos (then age 5, now age 12) makes my heart smile. We went from using a simple keyboard, to making the decision to haul my childhood baby grand across the country from my parents' home, because my children really love music. Khoi sets realistic expectations and teaches to each child's ability. He encourages them to practice, be committed and do their best, but isn't too strict or stern to make them want to quit. One of my children is naturally more gifted at piano than the other, and Khoi never makes the child with less natural ability feel badly. He always stresses that it's not how advanced you are, it's how the music makes you feel when you play -- if it brings a sense of happiness, joy, peace, calm.. and you're enjoying it, then that's all that matters. The classes are held in a colorful, carpeted studio and led by warm and welcoming teachers, many of whom have some form of early education training or experience teaching or working with children in their fulltime jobs. The program at Nightingale has been running for over 20 years, and Jennifer has it dialed to perfection. Each 8-week session has its own theme ("Hooray for the Holidays"; "Mother Goose Rock & Rhyme"; "Wonderful World of Music" to name a few) and its own theme-related songs, but the rhythm of the classes is consistent from week to week and session to session, providing an ideal environment for this tender age whose brains thrive on routine. The school also has an incredibly generous makeup policy to allow for any planned family vacations or unplanned family illnesses, and visiting family members and friends are always welcomed to watch or participate in class. My daughter attended her first Nightingale Music session when she was just 7 months old, and has been consistently enrolled since she was about 14 months. Now at two and a half, she can sing her solfege scale on pitch, and understands the fundamentals of rhythm, tempo, and dynamics. She stops and dances whenever we hear music out in the world (or asks me to play music on my phone so she can dance in our backyard), and sings constantly. She's made friends with some of the other kids in her cohort, imprinted onto a few of her teachers, and Jennifer has made us feel like part of a larger Nightingale family from the very start. As a 70% SAHM, I've tried out a lot of Mommy-and-Me type classes around San Diego, but Nightingale is the one that we've stuck with, and the one that I would most recommend.
