His teacher has even complimented the growth that has been observed in class. I appreciate Richard's feedback and suggestions after every session. He has excellent communication. Richard at Carmel Valley Test Prep was an excellent tutor who worked with my son weekly for about 2 months on his first ACT. Richard was effective in identifying areas of weakness and developing strategy to improve performance and gain confidence. He assigned daily/weekly practice tests and reviewed results weekly. He is enthusiastic and encouraging, but also firm and principled. Richard came to our home for tutoring sessions since we live close by, which was an added benefit. My son and I enjoyed working with Richard, and very pleased that my son achieved his target ACT score with his very first test (top 1%). The only areas of improvement I can think of are: 1. Have pre-test overall strategy review 2 to 3 weeks before ACT test, rather than 1 week before. My son had other school test he had to prepare and had to skip the last session before ACT. Bad timing! 2. I think it would have been better to try practice ACT for all 4 sections plus writing in one sitting when the time is close to actual ACT test, because this will put the student under the most realistic situation for practice. My son would have benefited from this. Finally, I like how Richard has a very reasonable hourly rate for his tutoring service that you pay each time, so you have all the flexibility without worrying about significant financial commitment upfront like many other test prep companies would do. I highly recommend Richard and his Carmel Valley Test Prep to any parents who want a great tutor with proven track record and easy to work with. read more

When I was first trying to find an ACT tutor, I was very close minded about the potential results. Though, after just one session with Richard, my mind was blown. He analyzed every mistake I made and constantly encouraged me to "aim for that perfect score." Each time I took a practice test employing his techniques, my scores raised. And, when I took the ACT for a second time after seeing Richard, I got the score that I wanted which was 4 points higher than my original score! I'm very thankful for his help, and I recommend Richard to anyone in need of a great tutor! read more

I can't say enough wonderful things about Carmel Valley Test Prep. Richard worked with my son weekly for 5 months. After each session I would get a detailed update about progress and next steps. Richard was introduced to me by my girlfriend whose son was being tutored by Richard. From the very beginning, Richard set up proper expectations with my son and made sure he understood the assignment for each week. Richard was always very encouraging but honest with what had been done and what needed to be done in the future. He worked diligently with my son, reviewed each mistake he made and provided detailed explanation. As a result of his tutoring, my son got 35 on ACT the first time he took the test. Richard helped me with AP Physics as well as ACT review. I had a 31 before I started tutoring with Richard. I was used to doing multiple tests per week and thought that was the best approach: volume. Richard and I decided to take a new approach studying smartly rather than taking a test per day. We focused on the parts I needed to work on and tackled those problems. By the end of about 6 weeks of tutoring I took the ACT and got a 34. He also understand physics very well and now helps me in AP Physics 1. read more
