My daughter started playing in her first lesson and was very excited she could play right away. He is very friendly, caring and knows his stuff! He's teaching my son the violin and, if he gets good enough on it, he'll be up for learning piano or guitar next from Mr. King. Yes-Mr. King teaches all types of instruments: clarinet, flute, cello, upright bass, guitar, violin, viola, piano and - dare I say it? - drums! I think he actually teaches more, but I seem to forget to ask. :) He's excellent with children and flexible with individual needs. He's not pushy or too lax and he's fun to talk with. Chuck is great! Really engaging both during and outside of teaching. Lots of interesting conversation around music. I've had a single violin lesson from Chuck so far and really enjoyed it. I felt he had a great gauge in meeting me exactly where I was at in terms of my progress. Most importantly he has a lot of fun teaching and wants to make sure the student has fun, too. A very high music teacher recommendation from a fly on the wall Usually, we either drop off my granddaughter for her one hour clarinet lesson or we go for a walk in Balboa Park across the street. This visit was different. Mr. Charles King of King Music is also a client of mine. I do his computer work. I was summoned to his home studio a day when my granddaughter had no lesson and I addressed a lot of accumulated serious computer issues while he taught many students with both 1 and 1/2 hour lessons. I was there about 5 hours; an unusually long amount of time. What I witnessed was incredible. I was privileged to see works in progress that few others are privy to. Those hours have become cherished. Mr. King worked with both children and adults from about 4 to 67 years of age. His knowledge was encyclopedic and abilities widespread and significant. However, the most impressive factor was his patience and the rapport he had with each and every student, in his charge. He had one student that was less than enthusiastic. One I heard had worked hard, practiced a lot but even I could tell the spark of passion was not there. Most students were committed, practicing regularly and clearly looked forward to the sessions. One student I witnessed was quite remarkable. She was an eight year old piano student with insight that wowed. I was close by so eavesdropping was easy. I recall Mr. King starting to explain a new concept to her. He started on step one of seven steps and before he got to step three she had soared ahead and got it. She told him where he was headed and how easy it had been. She has huge potential but all students seem to flourish under his tutelage. More than anything that impressed me during my stay was the way his students related to him. He was always unvaryingly respectful, kind and positive with each student whether they were a budding prodigy or headed for a life bereft of musical ability. Each student he gave positive reinforcement to and coaxed or challenged them to a degree appropriate to their interest, need and ability. He never pushed so hard that they would lose enthusiasm and try to talk their parents into letting them quit. The kids told him at length what they were enjoying and came easy and what they found difficult and needed help with. I could tell that Mr. King was much more than their teacher, he was also their friend and in some cases, their confidant. When they needed to discuss a personal problem, and they did, he allowed them an appropriate amount of time to get something off their chest but he never lost focus and soon had them again focused on the reason they were there. He clearly cared about the whole kid, understanding that if he could relieve a little tension in their life the air would clear a bit allowing the music in while imbuing a infectious desire to learn more. I, the fly on the wall, solved all his computer problems but more unexpectedly enjoyed the sessions immensely. Despite my not practicing, I also learned something about music. I know Mr. King teaches clarinet, piano, guitar, violin, viola, cello, flute, saxophone and trumpet but I believe he teaches other instruments as well. Most pointedly he teaches the instruments we call the mind and the heart. He does have instruments to loan, parts to sell and can get you any instrument or accessories you require at very reasonable rates. I have known a few music teachers in my day. My 10 year old son has been taking violin lessons with Mr. King for a few months now. Mr. King is an EXCELLENT music teacher. He has a very extensive background and knowledge in music. He can pretty much play all musical instruments. My son loves going to his violin class because Mr. King makes learning fun. Never a dull moment. The location is perfect too. Safe neighborhood and plenty of parking space. His rate is VERY reasonable also (one of the reasons I picked him as my son's teacher).
