We have since added our younger daughter to the classes. They both love the music, even as it has pivoted to remote. Both teachers are very warm, professional yet accessible to kids, and do a great job of engaging the children. At the beginning of the class session they shared that even if the kids seem distracted, they are still soaking up the music. I can attest that this is totally true..they may wander around to grab a toy or seem like they aren't engaged but their brain is truly in it. Each session features a new musical instrument and comes with a beautiful book, CD and download code to hear the music on the app. We have a collection of books and the kids really treasure looking at them while we listen to the music. We have been doing classes with their grandparents and everyone loves the experience. I can tell that the memories from our Songbirds music classes are something that will stay with our kids and our family for a very long time to come. I can't recommend them enough. (Also, I'm writing this as one of my children is singing a Music Together song in their bed, trying to fall asleep--pricelessly adorable! )

15 years after writing my initial review about my first son's guitar lessons with Gary, I am…read moresupplementing it. My second son now plays the clarinet at school. I was interested in options other than the free school instrument. His school suggested purchasing or renting from a big retailer!?!?! I did some research online and then took my son to Alan's to try clarinets in person. My son was able to play any of the clarinets Alan's had in stock in a private room -- and even try REALLY expensive mouthpieces. The gentleman helping us was an expert in the field and had lots of helpful information that clarified and supplemented my limited clarinet knowledge. My son walked out that day with a beautiful clarinet, at a very competitive price, which he will continue to upscale with better quality mouthpieces, also stocked at Alan's. I highly recommend stopping at Alan's for all of your music needs from private lessons to quality instruments. We received outstanding expert, no-pressure, no-nonsense customer service that we simply would not have received at bigger chain stores. Thank you, Alan's!

Justin differentiates his instruction to meet the needs of his students and is excellent at challenging them to their full potential. Nightingale Music is a play-based, child-focused early music education series, whose quality and…read moreconsistency are unmatched in San Diego County. The classes are held in a colorful, carpeted studio and led by warm and welcoming teachers, many of whom have some form of early education training or experience teaching or working with children in their fulltime jobs. The program at Nightingale has been running for over 20 years, and Jennifer has it dialed to perfection. Each 8-week session has its own theme ("Hooray for the Holidays"; "Mother Goose Rock & Rhyme"; "Wonderful World of Music" to name a few) and its own theme-related songs, but the rhythm of the classes is consistent from week to week and session to session, providing an ideal environment for this tender age whose brains thrive on routine. The school also has an incredibly generous makeup policy to allow for any planned family vacations or unplanned family illnesses, and visiting family members and friends are always welcomed to watch or participate in class. My daughter attended her first Nightingale Music session when she was just 7 months old, and has been consistently enrolled since she was about 14 months. Now at two and a half, she can sing her solfege scale on pitch, and understands the fundamentals of rhythm, tempo, and dynamics. She stops and dances whenever we hear music out in the world (or asks me to play music on my phone so she can dance in our backyard), and sings constantly. She's made friends with some of the other kids in her cohort, imprinted onto a few of her teachers, and Jennifer has made us feel like part of a larger Nightingale family from the very start. As a 70% SAHM, I've tried out a lot of Mommy-and-Me type classes around San Diego, but Nightingale is the one that we've stuck with, and the one that I would most recommend.

For many years now my siblings and I have been taking lessons from Evans for guitar, piano,…read moreukulele, and accompanying vocals. Evans is incredibly skilled and versatile in all of these instruments and adapts his teaching style to each of our individual personalities, preferences, and goals. Most of all, Evans embodies a passion for music and for life that is highly contagious, consistently making every lesson fun. While my siblings and I all have separate lesson times, occasionally Evans organizes us into a family band to play for his recitals which take place in public venues, typically restaurants. The opportunity to play for the public further encourages us to hold ourselves to higher standards as competent, professional musicians. In short, if you are looking for a music teacher who is both highly skilled and motivational, Evans is the one for you.

Update in response to the owner's reply: To San Diego Music…read moreAnd Art owner/contact Max: Your response actually reinforces the reason I left this review. Your instructor, Olga, publicly criticized my child in front of other parents and children. My child is neurodivergent. At times, he may have difficulty following directions, transitioning, or completing more complex instructions. That does not give any instructor the right to shame, embarrass, or publicly criticize a child. What is especially unacceptable is that your staff was already aware of my child's needs. Instead of speaking with me privately, giving me a warning, or trying to understand what support he might need, Olga chose to criticize him in front of others. When I brought this concern to you, I expected the owner to at least investigate what happened and listen to both sides. Instead, you immediately defended your instructor and treated my child as if he were simply the problem. You did not appear interested in understanding what actually happened or in finding a constructive solution. Instead, you joined in criticizing my child. Then, rather than addressing my concern about how your instructor handled the situation, you suspended my child's classes for an entire month. Children--especially neurodivergent children--deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. If a child is struggling to follow instructions, the appropriate response is to communicate privately with the parent and work toward a solution, not publicly embarrass the child and then blame him when the parent raises concerns. Parents should know how situations like this may be handled here before deciding whether this is the right environment for their child.
