The true stand outs, like Big Bite, have kept going strong - because they have a dedication to producing a quality product. They know what they do and they do it well. Unlike many plaices (sorry can't help myself), who use frozen fish or do pizza/chicken/burgers alongside their fish, these folks stay true to their roots, focusing on one product and excelling at it. Personally I'm not a fan of battered fish with its skin still on though because it never seems to crisp up nicely, it just gets a bit soggy. This is not a phenomena unique to the Paradise Fish Bar though so I do have to forgive it. Paradise is obviously very popular with a lot of the locals and school kids. On your walk up to Newington Green its rare not to see at least a few people holding bags of chips soaked in salt and vinegar. The service is always quick and friendly and the prices very reasonable. Paradise also makes a very welcome break from all the fried chicken chains which seem to dominate the area. I'd take fish, chips and mushy peas over greasy fried chicken and limp straw fries any day of the week.

Not only is the fish superbly white and fluffy, in a crisp, golden batter, and the chips fat and plentiful, but the service is efficient. Long live properly FAST food. The mushy peas were nothing to write home about (not bad, but not amazing like the fish and the chips). But the onion gravy? Om nom nom. Yum! Yum! I…read moreabsolutely love Burlington's. The takeaway is good, but it's better if you can go in and eat. There's a variety of different fish dishes (friend and grilled), sides and starters. Burlington's is the first place I had Fish and Chips in the UK. (I've been told it's better up north, but to date, I'm not sure I believe people, as what I've tried, really doesn't compare!) Burlington's also introduced me to Mushy Peas. I'm definitely a fan, and whenever I have out of the country visitors (who always seem to want to get Fish and Chips while they're in the UK for some reason), I always take them to Burlington's. It does help that it's near our place, but it is one of the better fish places I've been to. My partner and I can often get away with a starter and splitting a main because the portions are amazingly huge. The takeaway portions are smaller, but still quite good sized. I can't recommend it enough!
