Good local chipshop, I particularly recommend the plaice. The batter isn't too thick or doughy, and the chips are nice and crisp.

We had a great casual lunch at Poppies when we were in London last month, a satisfying meal of fish…read moreand chips and beer. Poppies has four locations, but this one on Hanbury Street by Spitalfields Market is the original. We were able to make an online reservation for six like an hour ahead of a Thursday lunchtime visit. We could've walked in, but the restaurant was fairly busy. The space was great, small and fun with a retro American diner aesthetic. There was a jukebox in one corner and tons of knick-knacks and memorabilia on the walls. We were with my parents and our boys, and the vibe was very easy and kid-friendly. We had a young, friendly server who wanted to talk to us about America, where he hoped to study. He was a bright-eyed sweetie, and he took very good care of us. We drank Poppies Pale Ale, which was on tap and quite refreshing on a hot day. And of course, we had lots of fish and chips. We tried both the haddock and the cod, which cost a dollar more. Our waiter said he personally preferred the haddock, and all of us ended up agreeing, though honestly both were delicious, flaky and flavorful, the batter light and crispy. The chips were great, as was the house tartar sauce. We also got sides of garden peas and sliced gherkins, which were both lovely. My kids had fish bites and fries. If you're looking for a chippy (love that word) on this side of London, I'd highly recommend checking out Poppies. It's a welcoming place with excellent fish and chips, exactly what we wanted for lunch that day.

The disappointing thing about all of this is that there is no way the workers who work there…read moreunderstand what are the goals of excellet customer service. I arrived at 9:20 PM knowing that they closed at 10 I had time to eat before they closed. I walked from my hotel as fast as I could just to have enough time because I saw the place as I was walking around I wanted to try it out because it looked really cool. Upon arriving, the Insight area was closed for any new customers. It being almost 930 I could understand somewhat. But in my concern, the worker that took my order said that I could sit outside. I put in my order set up the little bench outside and waited inside for my order to finish. My order finished at 9:30. I grabbed my drink. I grabbed my napkin. My fork went to sit outside and they had locked the bench down. I went back inside asking if they could unlock the bench cause there was still 30 minutes left. The workers there told me they could not unlock it because they need to be finished at 10 o'clock. I told them it would only take me 15 minutes or less to eat and they said no I'm sorry we will not unlock the bench. I ended up walking down the street ate the food as I walked as there was nowhere to sit. The service was really bad in the customer service absolutely unacceptable. My meal was €23 and I ended up eating it cold because there was nowhere to sit. I definitely will not be going back to this place and I highly suggest you do not go to this place if it's 30 minutes before closing and you're trying to eat somewhere where you could sit down. I really hope that the owner reads this and explains to their workers if someone is there ready to eat 30 minutes before closing the average person takes about 15 minutes to eat and should be allowed to eat. One star and most of that is connected to poor customer service.

A solid 3 stars for me - didn't love it, didn't hate it. It left me somewhat confused…read more You see, perched at the bar on a stool it had a friendly, relaxed vibe and a trendy bar feel to it. Fast forward a half hour or so and in came lots of hipster-types with their oversized black-rimmed specs and skinny-jeans, fast-forward another hour or so and in came the over-dolled up ladies. I popped to the loo only to find myself walking through an area completely different from the bar front. I started wondering if I'd walked into a Wetherspoons by accident. It smelt like disinfectant and cheap aftershave and was full of old men and angry-looking young ones. And then I was back in the front bar surrounded by bimbos and "men" (read: boys) with hair like they'd just stuck their finger in a live socket. ... dear lord I'm getting old... Still, the house wine wasn't bad and I had a couple to drown out the sad reality of the situation.

The bar area is really big, so it is ideal for large groups, and pretty central to all the other places in the area. A plus is also the huge neon sign outside makes it easy to spot. We only had drinks, but the food that came out looked really good. I had pleanty of opportunity to see it, as the barman also acted as waiter. His waiting seemed seemed to be his priority, as I had to wait patiently at the bar, as he kept disappearing to get more meals from the kitchen. At least I knew I would be the next person to be served, as I was the only person waiting at the bar. The drught beer selection seemd to be sewn up by the Camden Brewery, although they had one draugh lager alternative in Estrella Damm, which was my choice. On going to the toilets downstairs, I saw a huge function room, which I understand is a populr disco. Despite appearing invisible for several minutes, I would come back here. It had a nice laid-back atmosphere. Although I'm talking about a Sunday afternoon. I'm sure it's a totally different stoty on a Friday por Saturday evening.
