TLDR: Best BBQ in Napa, hands down. Brisket and burnt ends are killer, mac n cheese surprised me, the owners are absolute gems, and the space is gorgeous. Cornbread and sauces missed the mark for me, but the meat more than made up for it. Definitely going back! The full story: Finally! A BBQ joint that knows how to season meat! Stateline Road Smokehouse in Napa is the spot. We rolled in on Mother's Day and got hit with a line almost out the door -- always a good sign! Turned out the wait wasn't bad though, because they've got a slick assembly line going. I watched the girl slicing my brisket right next to the order-taker, then just followed my tray as it moved down the line. The space is gorgeous -- big, bright, and airy, with clear garage doors and windows across the front and a domed ceiling overhead. We ordered the brisket, burnt ends, BBQ chicken, mac n cheese, and hot water cornbread. Plates come with their house-made pickles, onions, and peppers. They even have stuff for non-carnivores -- the Cherry Wood-smoked Maitake & Greens (maitake mushrooms, lettuce, heirloom rice, marinated garbanzo beans, lemon vinaigrette) and the 18th & Vine Grain Bowl (barley, quinoa, sweet potato, arugula, parsnip, saffron egg, pickled onion, burnt orange vinaigrette) both looked fantastic. Maybe I'll grab one next time -- right next to a pile of brisket! On the drink side they've got wines by the glass, boozy slushies, draft beer, and batch cocktails. We stuck with water this round. Prices were a notch above what I'm used to in Sacramento, but for Napa they felt totally fair -- especially since this is probably the best BBQ around. The brisket was a steal at $19 for a half pound. The chicken at the same price for a half bird felt a bit steep, but I could be off on what's normal up there. The brisket was seasoned beautifully from the very first bite -- smoked to perfection, fall-apart tender. No knife needed. The burnt ends were my favorite of the whole spread. They had a splash of sauce on them but it wasn't needed -- those rubs hold their own. The BBQ chicken had a totally different vibe -- hard to describe, but it gave off Asian-influenced flavors. Solid on its own, but pairing it with the brisket and burnt ends was a misfire. The flavors just didn't play nice together. The mac n cheese was great. It wasn't baked, but it also wasn't mushy or overcooked like most places -- the noodles still had bite and the cheese was flavorful. Sadly, the cornbread was the weak link. A little dry, kinda bland, and not as thick as I like. About the size of a thin 6" pancake -- not really worth the price. The other miss for me was the BBQ sauces. Just not my thing flavor-wise. To be fair though, the owner built his whole business on those sauces and apparently ships them out by the pallet, so plenty of people clearly love them! It was awesome seeing Darryl Bell, the owner, back in the kitchen working his magic -- and get this, he's reportedly the first Black restaurateur in Napa since the 1800s! That made the warm welcome hit even harder. Even with the rush going on, he popped out to snap a picture with us and thank us for coming in. His business partner Jeremy was also working the floor, checking in on every table, and he stuck around to talk us up about Darryl's BBQ skills and how their partnership came together. Then during a lull, Darryl came back out and gave us the whole tour -- the cultural and historical design choices throughout the space (the building used to be a Quonset hut, which explains that cool domed ceiling) plus the murals on the back patio. Stopped by here for a takeout order on the way back from a dog training session. Facility was nice and clean. Staff friendly. Food was okay. I ordered a rack of ribs, 1/2 lbs of brisket, a sausage, pulled pork and a side of Mac and cheese. I would say the best thing I order was the Mac and cheese. Flavorful and cheesy, Mac spirals right texture. Not too firm or soggy. Sausage was good. Flavorful. Brisket was solid as far as cook, salty My rib rack was dried out. lil tough. I also don't think there are many BBQ spots around Napa serving beef ribs like this, if any at all. Overall, Stateline Road Smokehouse continues to be one of the best BBQ spots in Napa for me. The sausage is excellent, the brisket is consistently good, and it's the kind of place I'd recommend to anyone visiting Napa looking for great tasting and aesthetic food. They have daily specials! We came on a Sunday which they offer cornbread or hot chicken by itself or in a sandwich. Initially, I thought it was a combo the way it was written, but luckily staff clarified it. We got the cornbread, half rack of ribs, 1/2 lb of brisket, greens, Mac n cheese, burnt ends, and sausage. The cornbread was really yummy that we ordered another one to go! The ribs could have been more tender. The brisket was cool. The meat was room temp so while we were eating, it got cold fast. Mac n cheese was a favorite. The greens had great flavor but leaned on the saltier side. The burnt ends was the least favorite, it wasn't like the typical burnt ends we're used to. Staff are friendly. The space is spacious and they have lots of sinks to wash off your bbq hands. They also have several TVs all playing a different classic movie. We came by for bbq while staying in downtown Napa and were looking for a quick dinner. It was a bit late in the day so the smoked chicken was sold out but we were able to try the pork ribs and brisket. The brisket was a bit dry but I really liked the pork ribs which were juicy and super flavorful. I also really enjoyed the mac & cheese and the cole slaw which surprisingly had a spicy kick to it. I've been here a few times since the opening. I'm a huge fan of chef Darrell Bell. He actually greeted me when I walked in the door. All the staff was very kind. I got the brisket sandwich and small curly fry . Pro tip get everything on the side . So you can really enjoy the flavor from the brisket. Also get the original and spicy barbecue sauce on the side. The brisket had this pull . Amazing flavors melt it in your mouth. A lot of attention pull apart really easily. It was all meat, no fat. First impression looked like a car shop had been reimagined and redone kind of like a cafeteria style restaurant. We stopped by around 2:00 PM based on the strong hype and made a point to visit while returning from Calistoga. Unfortunately, the experience fell well short of expectations. We ordered the baby back ribs, brisket, and burnt ends. The ribs were a major letdown, overly tough, dry, and difficult to eat. Cutting between the bones was a struggle even with a knife. When I raised the issue, the chef dismissed it as their "style," claiming the meat is intentionally not meant to fall off the bone. That explanation doesn't justify the lack of tenderness, it simply felt like poor execution. The brisket was the only redeeming item! Tender, flavorful, and done right. Everything else, failed to impress and didn't come close to the reputation this place seems to carry. Overall, aside from the brisket, this was a disappointing and overhyped experience. This was an amazing barbecue spot. With the amazing friendly staff and amazing food I will drive to Napa just to get a plate. The set up is perfect, you pick your food and find a seat. Stopped here on the way home from a trip. Everything looked great it was so hard to choose! My family got sandwiches with potato salad and i got a quinoa bowl. The staff were extremely friendly and our food was out very quickly. Its essentially an assembly line for food. The building was really cool. I am not sure if it was built to be a restaurant but it was nice. It was very open and almost had like a modern barn feel. It was VERY clean. There were people standing around waiting to clean as soon as we finished. The food was great! Tasted like legit southern bbq. The potato salad was warm which is my favorite way to have it. If I could rate this experience over 5 stars I would. Perfect grill and smoke on the meat. The pickled veg is a great pop of acid. Most bbq places miss the mark on sides, but I will be taking a road trip for these greens and beans. They're so good, they've ruined any other greens for me....I'm still thinking about them. My husband loved their bbq sauce and so we took a bottle home (they sell their bottled bbq sauce at the counter). - The potato salad was odd... it came warm and the aioli tasted funny. There was no garlic flavor, or salt really. It was quite bland. Don't recommend unless you like plain, creamy sauced potato. + Mac and cheese was solid. Not super flavorful, but solid and creamy - topped with bread crumbs. Would get again. +/- Burnt ends were just okay. The brisket was a little tough and dry. Would rather get the dino rib next time. Portion was bigger than I expected. We definitely ordered too much food overall. + dino rib was fantastic! quite pricey at around $40 I think? And on weekends only I believe Wish they would give more pickles! The tang really helped break through the heaviness of all the meat. Or could I order them as a side extra? My first, but not last visit to Stateline was over the weekend. Very clean, sleek interior with a clearly labeled entrance /exit to make for fluid flow. Menu shows meats, sandwich/bowl options, and sides. We went with an array; 1/2 rack baby back ribs, chipotle sausage, small pulled pork - all topped with OG sauce. Both sides were savory- the coleslaw (which had jicama great consistent) and the potatoe salad (which was loaded with garlic- YUM!) We even saw the chef, Darrel come out and was taste tasting what was being served - quality control at its finest. Full disclosure: I was born and raised in the Deep South (GA). I *know* bbq. And I like all types of bbq from around the world, but especially GA, NC, TN, TX, and KS. If I walk into a bbq restaurant and don't smell smoke, I turn around and go somewhere else. So, our daughter recommended we give this place a try and boy am I glad we did! First step through the door, I got a good whiff of the smoke. The place smells like Heaven on Earth. We ordered: *1 (GIANT) Beef Rib - holy cow, so tender and juicy. The bark on the outside was perfection. *Half-rack Baby Back Ribs - again so tender the bone slid right out and excellent smoky flavor. *Small Burnt Ends - I'll admit this wasn't what I wanted due to previous experience with dry, hard or too chewy burnt bits. This was nothing like that! Juicy, tender and full of flavor. *Small Beans & Greens - Where I come from, there are no beans in the greens but this was an absolutely delicious twist. Greens and protein? It's health food! LOL *Large Potato Salad - oh wow, warm potato salad was a hit. Talk about comfort food! * We tried all 3 of their bbq sauces. Honestly, none of the meats needed sauce IMO, and the sauces were too sweet for my taste. But of the 3, the "spicy" one was our favorite. 5/5 Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Ambiance This place is so good, I was blown away with quality of the meats we visited on a Sunday with a party of four and ordered the brisket, burnt ends, chicken, macaroni & cheese, hot water cornbread and beans and greens. I'm not sure where to start except to say go! The brisket is smoked for 16 hours and the result is super tender and flavorful. The hot water cornbread was a large pancake, not what I expected so delicious! The macaroni and cheese was creamy goodness and the collard greens with bean were genius! The food was so good I can't wait to go back! It's a fast casual restaurant, you order down a line but a waiter follows you to your table and brings food and drinks to your table. Throughout our dining experience the servers asked us if we needed anything and even offered our table to meet the owner. Darryl Bell, came by and we praised his food and he was just wonderful. Good BBQ is hard to come by in California, but Stateline Road Smokehouse is delivering a slice of Kansas City style BBQ to Napa Valley. Tried a few items, my favorite being the brisket & the burnt ends. The Tri-Tip sandwich was good, but a bit pricey for its size. The Mac & Cheese wasn't my preferred style but the taste is definitely there. And you can't go wrong with a good side of coleslaw. The BBQ sauce they have is honestly not my favorite. There's a taste to it that I don't really enjoy. Maybe it's just preference, but I prefer a more standard BBQ sauce flavor. Very friendly staff with an efficient operation. The service was awesome, there are a lot of big screen TV's and the food was even better. Everything we tried was absolutely delicious. A few weeks ago, my son Landon and I watched a video on YouTube, behind the scenes on State Line Road BBQ in Napa, and we both wanted to go immediately. We both love BBQ, but my son became enamored with visiting this place. He's 9, and he loves to cook and he loves BBQ. So, we planned it for a ski week outing. Yesterday we visited, and we had such an amazing time in this unique venue. It's a neat clean restaurant with plenty of space. The thing that really shined was the staff. They were so kind. Every single person there was friendly and smiled and said hello. The manager spoke to us and made sure we had everything we needed. Other members of the staff came out and said hello because it was our first time there and we had driven up from Marin. Then, when they learned that Landon has interest in cooking and that he had seen the YouTube video, they offered to have Chef Darryl come out and say hello. Not only did Chef come out and speak with Landon and talk to him about some of his cooking, but he offered to take him on a tour of the smokehouse in the back where they keep the smokers. He showed him the smokers, the wood and the fire and talked about the way they cook the food and source the materials and ingredients. The Stateline team did that because they wanted to. It was good fortune that we showed up that day and it was the right kind of busy and the right kind of day where we got to do those things. I just want to say thank you to the staff, and I would recommend anyone who wants to go and have some good Kansas City-style barbecue. Friendly service, very large clean space, multiple single stall bathrooms kept in pristine condition, several large TVs scattered indoors, an outdoor patio in the back with a few more tables, and most importantly - solid BBQ! This was our first stop before wine tasting and it didn't disappoint, we ordered: - Mushroom salad (forgot the name) 3.5/5 - we asked for dressing on the side which should have been a type of vinaigrette, but was given a thick white sauce instead that was reminiscent to mayo. Mushrooms were great, the other lettuce leaves were fairly basic. - Half BBQ chicken 4.5/5 - also got it with sauce on the side and it was very tasty, not dry, just right - Half lb brisket 4.5/5 - we asked for leaner pieces and even then, they were moist. I can't believe it took me and my wife over a year to get over to Napa's best BBQ spot. As a native Kansas Citian, it was refreshing to walk into a restaurant with smells and sounds of home. The music playing was soulful and provided a warm energy that was welcoming. The staff was bright and cheery despite the crowd and noise inside. Ordering was easy and following your tray as food was added down to the register almost felt like being back in school. The three different kinds of sauce that chef Darryl had created complimented the meats perfectly. For the pulled pork, I'd recommend the sweet sauce to enhance the tender pork. For the spicy sauce, the succulent burnt ends absorbed the peppery goodness along with the acidity of the vinegar that is present in KC BBQ sauce. The regular sauce has great flavor that I want to try on the ribs next time. I believe it can go on anything and I bought a jar to take home. The greens tasted just as my mother would make during the summer in my childhood. The banana pudding was served chilled with bits of an orange zest cookie. I love banana pudding with vanilla wafers, but this new twist had my taste buds dancing around. Unexpectedly, I've had barbecue at 3 different places in Napa within a month. I came by Stateline Road Smokehouse with a friend around 2pm on a Saturday, and it wasn't too busy. There's a small to park at in the back, with a nice outside patio that has umbrellas for shade, as well as plenty of seating inside the large spacious interior of the building. Service was friendly, and helped bring out our food as well. We definitely over-ordered, and got the brisket, ribs, burnt ends, and the potato salad, cole-slaw, mac and cheese, and banana pudding to share. The brisket was phenomenal and fall-apart tender; the ribs were also good but not as amazing, and the burnt ends were tasty though a little heavy and too smothered in sauce. The potato salad was especially tasty - plenty of dill and other herby goodness mixed in. Coleslaw wasn't as notable, and mac and cheese while good was lacking a little in flavor. We liked the banana pudding, especially the crispy cookie bits ontop. Went there on a Monday before 6pm. Line to order wasn't long and a friendly guy asked for my order. Went with a brisket sandwich and a small potato and then ordered a beer once I moved down towards the register. The price is my only complaint. Sandwich, potato salad and a beer came to $45 including a 20% tip. Crazy! Plenty of open tables in their very large, modern-looking dining area that utilizes wood for tables and seating material. Very friendly dining room staff that asked if I wanted them to put sports on one of the TVs. Just asked for some additional sauce which they brought over pronto. The sandwich appears small but wa packed with meat and with the extra pickles and peppers along with the potato salad turned out to be quite filling. Great taste and a roll that stood up to all that sauce. Not a huge fan of the potato salad but that's only because it wasn't the normal deli-style I'm used to. Quality/Quantity - Simple menu. Today we got the following: Burnt Ends - Small size $12. I should have asked what size is small, as this was really small. Good thing the majority of us were light eaters. The burnt ends were just okay. Pulled Pork - Small size $11. Maybe because this is shredded and more compact, because it felt like there were more...? We enjoyed this more than the burnt ends. Baby Back Ribs - Half size $24. Thanks for giving us 7 ribs! Not sure if it was done on purpose as there were 7 of us today, but much appreciated. One for each of us. The ribs were actually dryer than I preferred and we had a hard time cutting each rib. And I have experience. Not sure if it was due to the knife I was using or due to the dryness of the rib...? Brisket - 1lb, $35. This was everyone's favorite, glad we got a pound. More than enough to share and appreciate the dish. I can for sure recommend this! A highlight of the meal. Sides today were: Mac & Cheese - Large, our favorite of the sides. I appreciated the type of noodles you used. The pasta did a good job holding together the cheese. Potato Salad - Large, another good option. Beans & Greens - Large, our least favorite. The texture and flavor was interesting. More soupy than I would have preferred. Overall, the food was good. But with the 5 star service = 4 star review. Ambiance - New location, beautiful construction/build out. A huge kitchen but a small window to see inside. I always prefer open kitchens, I would have built this with more windows to showcase the kitchen, foods, and the kitchen team. Indoor and outdoor seating, but it's raining today. Huge pit/smoker area outside which was cool. And the smoke/smokers smelled so good outside. Cool mural. I especially like the accessible sinks to wash our hands from all that good BBQ sauce. Service - Overall good. Well I would say 5 stars. From the friendly greeting to the directions and instructions. Follow your food down the cafeteria style assembly line to the end to pay. The team cleaning was nice also. Oh, and we got here near closing time. Almost the only customers. Self service plates, utensils, etc. Price - $130 + tip; I think reasonably priced for BBQ. Super nice, spacious space and friendly staff!! There is ample seating (indoors and dog friendly outdoors). Thoughtful hand wash stations for sticky BBQ hands and clean unisex restrooms. Our food experience was a bit disappointing; maybe we didn't order the right things on our first visit. We ordered the tri tip sandwich - it was beautifully presented like the rest of the items we ordered - but the meat was super chewy and had giant pieces of fat attached. We enjoyed the beer, the mac n cheese and maitake salad (though I can't say we could taste smoking). All salads are heavily overdressed so suggest getting the dressings on the side if you like it lightly dressed. The coleslaw was also swimming in its dressing. Bottom line, one of the nicest BBQ restaurants I've been to but the food didn't hit the spot for us. We will try different items next time. read more

Visited on a Saturday around 2pm and ordered takeout for a group of 5. No wait when we arrive, there were a few other guests but plenty of open tables and seats in the restaurant and on the patio. Bright open spacious dining area. Food: Brisket - really tender, succulent and a great lean to fatty ratio, nice smokiness with a mild spice rub that lets the flavor of the beef shine Burnt Ends - very good, super smoky and highly seasoned, large portions was maybe two cups worth of burnt ends, meat was tender but not fall apart, not too fatty, definitely worth a try Pork ribs - good, these had a light glaze, a little sweet smokiness, meat was tender but still held onto the rib so very well prepared just preferened the brisket options over the ribs Chipotle Sausage - good, plump and juicy, very savory with a hint of spiciness, great snap from the casing, really meaty and a great add on if it's available Mac and cheese - very good, rich, creamy, salty, cheesey topped with some seasoned bread crumbs, pasta was perfectly cooked, if you like Mac and cheese don't think you'll be disappointed Beans and green - very good, stewed collards with white beans and pork, savory and hearty but with a subtle acidity that made it a great flavor contrast to the rich meats, definitely worth a try if you visit Pickles - a side they provided, mix of cucumber and onions, a great sweet tangy additional to the meal BBQ sauces - 3 options, a standard, sweet and spicy, all were good and complimented the meat well, the spicy in particular was my favorite adding a bit of subtle sweet heat Service was good, friendly and efficient, order at the counter and follow your tray to the register to pay. Overall really enjoyed the BBQ at Stateline, every dish we tried was delicious really can't go wrong. Wow, what a great place! So impressed with the building, the cleanliness, the design, and the friendly people! Lots of food choices for people to make. My husband and I split some dishes and they were delicious.... The burnt ends were yummy, but had too much sauce so next time I would order it on the side. The brisket was a little dry for us and we ordered the sauce on the side, but asked for mayo as well. The mushroom salad was delicious... So different. I tasted something new in every bite!! I've never had a salad like it in my life! But the star of the show was The little aïoli with Rancho, Gordo beans and carrots that was served with the eggplant! Seriously, it was one of the best things I've ever eaten... I totally compare it to the best bite I've ever had was Ken Frank's carpaccio at Bank! I didn't care for the eggplant as it wasn't cooked enough for me and didn't have enough flavor, but that's just me. Their wines by the glass are a great deal! A Rombauer Chard for $10... Everywhere else it's $15-$18! They had a Turley Zin that would've went incredible with all that meat, but I have quit drinking, so that wasn't a choice for me but I had a yummy Diet Coke with lots of ice that hit the spot! Can't wait to go back and try some new dishes! Super funny experience... Order the brisket, burnt ends, Mac and cheese, and half a rack of ribs. Any good bbq joint, when ordering brisket, should be asking if you want point or flat (fatty/moist vs lean). They didn't ask, but since they cut to order, I quickly chimed in and asked for the point, which they then sliced from that side of the brisket. The brisket was great! I felt the ribs were a little dry for my liking. The Mac and cheese at first looked concerning, but the person getting our food came to the rescue and added more melted cheese to get it back to yummy cheesy creamy goodness! The burnt ends were good, but a little dry, they added more bbq sauce to liven it up as well. The space is new and inviting and the service was on point. They checked on us while we were eating. They don't have bottles of bbq sauce available when you eat but they have proportioned out small sauce containers you can ask for. So we had to get a little more sauce. The spicy bbq sauce was quite good. If you're looking for a legit bbq place in the area, this one is pretty darn good! read more

We were hungrily plotting what to eat after our wine tasting and stumbled upon Stateline Road Smokehouse. They weren't super busy on a Saturday, but we did arrive in that awkward time between lunch and dinner. The interior was very spacious, with an industrial vibe and minimal decor, but plenty of seating. We went up to order at the counter, which kind of gave cafeteria vibes. I chose the Brisket Sandwich with a small side of Mac & Cheese, and an Arnold Palmer. We also got a side of Burnt Ends to share between the three of us. Service was friendly and quick! My Brisket Sandwich was super tasty and filling, especially with the different BBQ sauces - I tried original, sweet, and spicy. I do wish they gave the option of adding cheese to the sandwich, but that was the only thing missing. The Mac & Cheese and Burnt Ends were both fantastic! I was almost too full for dessert, but couldn't resist trying the Banana Pudding. I'm so glad I did because it rocked my world - perfect texture, especially with the crumbles on top. The bbq here was mind-blowing delicious. I feel like when you think of Napa, you don't really think about how it's home to one of the best bbq joints in the bay... and yet, it is! They've got a great setup for this restaurant. You order cafeteria style and pay at the end. You'll get to watch them assemble your plate of meats, which really helps work up your appetite. They arrange it very strategically so it's aesthetically pleasing as well. There's plenty of sinks to wash your hands, without the need to go into the bathroom. The dino rib just melted in your mouth. It's pricey and only available on weekends (but we were able to snag one on a Friday!) The ribs had a wonderful smoke flavor to it that wasn't too overwhelming. The two things that surprised us the most were the housemade sausage (10/10 snap, meaty, juicy - a perfect sausage) and the potato salad (tangy, creamy, refreshing). The food was so good that we even made a second trip on the way home and got it to go. Even after sitting out for 4 hours, the food was still just as good. Their homemade bbq sauce is also delicious and I appreciate the variety that they have cause there's really one for everyone! I found the original sauce to be plenty sweet for me already, so the sweet bbq sauce was just a bit too much for me. The spicy bbq sauce is mild but pairs well with the food. I also appreciated the friendly people that worked here as well. They're happy to give you recommendations and are super patient as they take your order. The staff are always actively wandering around the dining area as well, bringing you extra napkins, plates to share, and really whatever you need. The crazy part? We didn't even need to ask for it!
