I'm still in shock at all the time and attention they're lending to our family to make sure we have everything we need as we settle in. Jody makes it her business to closely watch any news horse on their ranch, paying extra attention to any medical needs and feed. She's literally an expert on every horse at her ranch and she treats them all as kindly as she would her own. We've met many families who also board out here and they're all delightful as well. Pros - Nice clean barn with good-sized stalls for the horses. They offer outdoor pipe corrals that…read moreare partially covered and they have large in and outs in the barn. They have two arenas, one fenced, one not, and one round pen. They have lights in the fenced arena. They offer two types of hay, Bermuda and Alfalfa which is pretty good quality. They take good care of the property and the owners are nice. They also have big turnouts for the horses which are really well maintained and bigger than what you see at other barns in the area. The property is really beautiful too, great views and access to loads of trails at Happy Camp Park. Cons - this isn't a barn for nighttime riders as it is very, very dark. They have lights up at the main barn and one light for the parking lot, but it's pretty dark. I had a little trouble getting the groom to consistently feed my horse properly, which is one of the reasons I left. The arenas have considerable downtime when it rains too which puts a real damper on Winter training. The prices for boarding there are really high and are comparable with a show barn that offers far more amenities than VDM offers - too high for what you get in my opinion. They also have several dogs running free - which can really freak out the horses sometimes (but if your horse is used to that, it's pretty fun for the dogs). They are great if you want to ride on the trails and during the day and if you aren't a stickler about your horse being fed exactly as you ask all the time. All the boarders are nice and the property is quite beautiful...it just depends what you are looking for.

We arrived there in about 1997 on the coat tails of horse trainer, riding teacher extraordinaire, Jim Frazier. A year or so later we bought a sweet Quarter horse named Margarita, "Maggie". who has been a treasure in our lives. A country property is always in need of maintenance; however, I totally disagree with Gail and her sour grapes comments. Gail and her family kept horses, multiple, at the ranch for MANY years so her comments reflect on her more than on ranch management. Our stall gets cleaned daily, the feed is very good Alfalfa twice daily and if your horse has special needs they can be accommodated. Tack rooms are provided, there are multiple arenas, 2 round pens, and 2 turn out areas. You have a choice of pipe corral with some cover, breezeway barn with lots of cover, box stalls, large pipe areas for more than one horse, and small box stalls for recuperating horses. The people who care for the horses are familiar with horse needs and sure to call if your horse needs attention. And, if you are a student raising a steer for the Faire you might find a spot for that critter , too.

There is a sink with soap to wash hands and a porta potty on location. A short walk away is the public restroom for the Rancho Potrero trailhead that is fairly new. For camp there was temperature screening upon arrival. For the trail rides there was a limit of 5 (family members or family pods), age 7 and up, and not more than 200 lbs. My 9 year old son enjoyed the camp more than the trail ride as it taught him basics and provided more opportunities to interact with the horses. He was the only boy at camp but he really likes animals. They went out on short walking rides only, which was plenty for my son. The trail ride was a full hour and we saw coyotes, hawks, and kites. Adults really enjoyed it, but it was a little long for the 7 year old. The other slightly unexpected occurrence was of the horses going through their natural bodily motions during the ride: fart, pee and poop. We were untouched, it just elicited alot of reaction from the kids. Since this is an outdoor activity, dressing for the weather is the main difference that will make your experience enjoyable. In July, we used thinner long pants with vented athletic wear shirts. For Nov, we wore jeans with double layered long sleeved shirts. They do not cancel except for extreme weather. Their website has more information about camps, lessons and rides. We had positive interaction and are grateful to have this facility close to us, and at a reasonable price. Definitely recommend and we would do it again.

Went to watch him feed and sure enough he was feeding his horses 2 flakes each and mine 1/2 a flake. They were ribby and sick when I moved them after 3 months. That's not even the worst. My 15 year old daughter was allowed to ride without being watched by the trainer. The trainer claimed his horse she was riding was a gentle, quiet horse. My 15 year old was an advanced rider and got bucked off so hard the ambulance had to come get her. She permanently injured her hip and had to have physical therapy and chronic pain. It turned out that the horse she was on had not been out of a 10 x10 stall in 2 months. The trainer has my youngest daughter and her horse on this add on yelp. Is he kidding???? I found out after moving to a different ranch that my experience there is the norm. There have been many people injured riding with that trainer. The owner of the ranch is fully aware and does not care. Since you sign a form not holding them accountable there is nothing you can do.
