We met our guide at a private lot with direct beach access. (No crossing freeways or long rides to the beach) Our guide Steve was friendly and we were given clear instruction before mounting the horses. My husband had never been on a horse before and he was nervous but afterward said he had a great time and felt confident on the horse as we rode. While we did not book a private ride, our group ended up only being our family of three and it was a truly gorgeous day and awesome experience. If we lived local I would do this all the time!

I brought a water bottle attached to a lanyard and both of these employees felt the need to judgmentally ask me if I "really needed that water bottle" and "are you sure that won't fall off?" Of course, the water bottle did fall off. When we got back, the man rudely and unnecessarily remarked "I told you it would fall off." I was paired with a terrible horse who did not follow any of my commands, constantly ate the vegetation, pinned his ears at and would try to bite the other horses for no reason, etc. I have some experience riding horses and I was doing my absolute best with this out-of-control horse. In turn, I was continually being barked at by the guides to "pull up on the reins and release, don't let him eat, kick him, go to the back, catch up to the rest of the group, keep him away from the other horses" etc. In addition, we rode through a very busy freeway overpass with multiple onramps/offramps and cars everywhere. We also passed right next to an active railroad. Of course, a train roared past a mere ten feet away from us. The horses spooked and it was a miracle that no one was thrown off. We were not given any prior warning that we would be riding in the middle of these very dangerous environments. If there was a warning in the waiver, I wouldn't have known because we were so rushed to sign it and had no time to read it. We finally made it to the actual beach and spent a mere 20 minutes on the shore before riding back through the danger zones towards home. I spent the entire ride pissed off, disappointed and feeling unsafe.

I had even taken a fall off of one that was running to the barn (and knowing what I know now I would not have been on that horse to start with.) Prior to lessons I was intimidated and maybe even a little fearful. All of that washed away in my first lesson. What I love the most is that she makes sure you see the whole picture from the first step into the barn to putting them back out. She helps you understand why the movements are so important and how in return the horse is reading them. Imme is a natural teacher and provides clear instruction. They have two arenas, one fenced, one not, and one round pen. They have lights in the fenced arena. They offer two types of hay, Bermuda and Alfalfa which is pretty good quality. They take good care of the property and the owners are nice. They also have big turnouts for the horses which are really well maintained and bigger than what you see at other barns in the area. The property is really beautiful too, great views and access to loads of trails at Happy Camp Park. Cons - this isn't a barn for nighttime riders as it is very, very dark. They have lights up at the main barn and one light for the parking lot, but it's pretty dark. I had a little trouble getting the groom to consistently feed my horse properly, which is one of the reasons I left. The arenas have considerable downtime when it rains too which puts a real damper on Winter training. The prices for boarding there are really high and are comparable with a show barn that offers far more amenities than VDM offers - too high for what you get in my opinion. They also have several dogs running free - which can really freak out the horses sometimes (but if your horse is used to that, it's pretty fun for the dogs). They are great if you want to ride on the trails and during the day and if you aren't a stickler about your horse being fed exactly as you ask all the time. All the boarders are nice and the property is quite beautiful...it just depends what you are looking for.

Time stands still and yet flies by like crazy at the same time. It is so peaceful and quiet, surrounded by serene foothills, enchanted forests and luscious green pastures/hills. The horses are well taken care of, fed twice a day, cleaned daily for smaller stalls and weekly for the big paddocks. There's different size stalls for different monthly prices. The stables are part of an active cattle ranch, so there's oftentimes some cattle around in the hills. The options for riding out on trails are endless and so fun. Some are easy, others are demanding and challenging. I love being out here, especially early in the morning in the summer.
