At first it felt like a lot because I didn't know what to expect. They have a couple of different trails you can take and we took the easier one. It's still kicked my butt but it was definitely worth it. Now that I know what to expect I'd definitely come back on the regular. A lot of poison oak along the trails. So be aware of what plants you're touching. Some trails you go through some flower areas and there are a lot of bees but honestly they don't bother you. Make sure to take plenty of water. It's a beautiful view.

We hiked out to Paradise Falls, and while the view from a distance had me thinking, "That's it?"... once you get closer, it's actually beautiful. The weather was in the 80s, with the cool breeze made the hike so much more enjoyable (especially on the steeper parts). My pup had the best time too! I would've loved to let him run free, but this isn't an off-leash park. What I really loved is that there are so many different trails. Whether you're in the mood for a quick walk, a jog, or a longer hike, you'll find a route that fits. There were lots of people out enjoying the scenery, and the nearby town has plenty of cute spots to grab a bite afterward. It was such a fun outing. I would totally do it again!

A friend recently took me to Paradise Falls, and it was such a beautiful and peaceful experience…read more We started on the Teepee Trail where we saw a really cool teepee structure, then continued down to the bottom of the falls. The waterfall is stunning from below, and the view from the top is just as spectacular. Along the way we explored a small cave and passed two beautiful creeks. We even saw some ducks flying overhead, which made the whole hike feel even more special. After that, we hiked uphill on the Teepee Trail, stopped at Lizard Rock, and eventually made our way back to the parking lot. The views throughout the hike are wonderful and so peaceful there's nothing like disconnecting and reconnecting with nature here. Parking is free and the lot is fairly large (around 40 cars or more). There are bathrooms at the trailhead and also near the campground, which is very convenient. We ended up hiking about 5 miles. It took us 2 hours and 30 minutes of moving time, and about 3 hours total including breaks and photo stops. I highly recommend this trail if you're looking for a scenic and relaxing hike.

Normally, I consider this trail a solid 3-stars, mostly for the views from the top. However, the recent fires that hit this mountain, followed by abundant rainfall has created an explosion of color! The trail is moderately easy for most of the length, with a few fairly steep sections. Suitable for any age group other than young children. The initial climb is steep and leads to a "T". Go right for the longer gentler ascent or go left for the steep and shorter climb (you can also just do a loop, in which case I recommend climbing the steep ascent and walking down the gentler slope). The gentler ascent actually has notably better views. Ocean views, the naval air field, and one of the most scenic stretches of the PCH in California await. If adventurous, take the 6-mile loop trail around the summit before ascending. Gorgeous flowers (after a spring rain), mountain vistas, and various wildlife (including rattlesnakes)

Entry into this 600-acre preserve is limited to those who can make it up a steep oceanfront…read moremountain trail. The 0.9-mile Chumash Trail is located off PCH, across from a Navy Seabee shooting range. It is the most direct route and also happens to be the oldest trail in continuous use in the Santa Monicas. A farther, an more indirect route, is from Ray Miller Trailhead at Thornhill Brooke Beach via La Jolla Canyon Trail. The valley is sprawling mountain meadow circled by mountain ridges with Boney Mountain in the background. Chumash Indians inhabited this area for over for 7,000 years. It's located next to Mugu Peak which has become extremely popular since I last visited. Both destinations start with the Chumash Trail. At the top of the mountain the majority of the crowd bears right at a junction, heading towards Mugu Peak. You will need to continue straight and shortly you will soon be in almost complete solitude. With the solitude also comes the eerie reminder that you are also in mountain lion territory. The main trails of the preserve are La Jolla Valley Loop Trail and La Jolla Canyon Trail. They branch off in different directions allowing access to 70 miles of hiking trails within Point Mugu State Park. Over the northern section of the loop there is La Jolla Valley Walk-In Camp and a nearby pond. In my opinion the most important landmark along La Jolla Valley Loop Trail is the old water tank located under an oak tree at the base of the mountain near a dry creek. It's located at 6 o'clock along the loop (for reference the Chumash Trail enters at 9 o'clock position). This is the point where you can either cross the creek to ascend the mountain, continuing on Mugu Peak Trail, back to Chumash Trail. This way overlooks the ocean and has some great scenic views. You can also complete the La Jolla Valley Loop Trail in a clockwise direction and link back up with the Chumash Trail or you can continue on a little further and head down the canyon via La Jolla Canyon Trail to Thornhill Broome Beach. Unfortunately, there are no bathrooms and dogs are not allowed in the park. Parking is free but it can be really crowded on the weekends so you may want to arrive early.

Dear Hubby and I took a drive out to Ventura for my birthday, which happened to be mid-week this…read moreyear. Big hooray - it was sunny; no fog in sight. It was on the coolish side, but the abundance of sunshine made it seem warmer. We had an early dinner down on Main Street. Where we parked there was a sign indicating that the eastern entrance to Grant Park was nearby. We had been up there perhaps only once in the past, and we'd gone in from the west. The drive up in the late afternoon / early evening had the golden glow magic to it. The light was amazing! I was driving and marveling at every twist and turn on the roadway while ascending the hills. The wildflowers and green groundcover from winter's rains made the scenery even more breathtaking than it might be when the grasses start to turn golden instead of green. I was able to drive all the way to the top parking lot, which overlooks the Serra Cross, and the entire Ventura coastline. The view encompasses the pier, the harbor, then beyond out to Channel Islands Harbor, Port Hueneme, and the western edge of the Santa Monica Mountains. It solidified my feelings in that moment of gratitude for enjoying life in Ventura County for the past 40 years. A gorgeous view on a clear day can do that for a person. When a sunny day happens, and the winds are calm, I can recommend taking a drive up to the top of Grant Park to make some of your daily cares seem very small. Looking down on the city / county from on high helped lift my spirits and added joy to my birthday celebrations.

Located in the Boney Mountain Wilderness is a monument dedicated to Richard Ely Danielson. He…read moregenerously donated his land to the State of California for us all to enjoy. It's also the site of some pretty cool hiking. Nearby there is a chimney, all that is left of his old cabin. This is also the site of a hidden trail that takes you up to Boney Mountain. I recommend coming early in the morning. When I went it was cool with a mix of fog and some light drizzle. The hillsides were also covered with tons of blooming wildflowers. The hike was pretty strenuous, 5.5-miles round trip. You essentially descend down one mountain just to hike right back up another one. I think my favorite part was seeing the fog-covered majestic boulders of Boney Mountain suddenly appear when I turned a corner. To get there, from the main parking lot of Rancho Sierra Vista/ Satwiwa in Newbury Park, walk 0.4 miles to the path that leads to the Native American Indian Cultural Center. From there you can either take Big Sycamore Canyon Trail (the paved road) south to Danielson Road and take a left or you can take Satwiwa Loop Trail and hang a right at the fork. From there you will be at the top of the mountain looking down the canyon. Take a left and descend into the canyon for 0.8 miles. When you reach the bottom nature seems to come alive in HD. You'll hear birds chirping and the sound of water trickling and, if you go at the right season, this is when you'll start to see all of the wild flowers. Continue past the creek and make a sharp right when you reach a junction heading back up the mountain for a grueling 0.9 miles. For a short detour, before hanging a right, you can continue on and walk an additional 0.1 miles if you want to see a small waterfall. After you reach the top of the mountain you can pause to appreciate the views. You'll come across a sign and from there you will go down a bit for about 0.3 miles where you will encounter the monument. The trail is somewhat overgrown but still clearly visible.

About as simple as a park can get…read more Though fairly small, Carmenita Park seems clean and well maintained. There's a small grassy area, small play structure with a slide, a couple benches and picnic tables, a tiny BBQ grill, and a half basketball court. No drinking fountain or restrooms. The surroundings are fairly quiet save for the occasional light aircraft from the nearby airport. The park looks out over crop fields to the south, a reminder of Camarillo's agricultural beginnings. There's not a whole lot here in terms of recreation, which is unfortunate since this is the only park in this residential area. As the park district continues improving parks around the city, hopefully this one will get some much needed love.
