This trail ride was perhaps the worst I've ever experienced for multiple reasons. Two of the…read moreemployees in particular were so rude, uptight, and condescending. I brought a water bottle attached to a lanyard and both of these employees felt the need to judgmentally ask me if I "really needed that water bottle" and "are you sure that won't fall off?" Of course, the water bottle did fall off. When we got back, the man rudely and unnecessarily remarked "I told you it would fall off." I was paired with a terrible horse who did not follow any of my commands, constantly ate the vegetation, pinned his ears at and would try to bite the other horses for no reason, etc. I have some experience riding horses and I was doing my absolute best with this out-of-control horse. In turn, I was continually being barked at by the guides to "pull up on the reins and release, don't let him eat, kick him, go to the back, catch up to the rest of the group, keep him away from the other horses" etc. In addition, we rode through a very busy freeway overpass with multiple onramps/offramps and cars everywhere. We also passed right next to an active railroad. Of course, a train roared past a mere ten feet away from us. The horses spooked and it was a miracle that no one was thrown off. We were not given any prior warning that we would be riding in the middle of these very dangerous environments. If there was a warning in the waiver, I wouldn't have known because we were so rushed to sign it and had no time to read it. We finally made it to the actual beach and spent a mere 20 minutes on the shore before riding back through the danger zones towards home. I spent the entire ride pissed off, disappointed and feeling unsafe.

(No crossing freeways or long rides to the beach) Our guide Steve was friendly and we were given clear instruction before mounting the horses. My husband had never been on a horse before and he was nervous but afterward said he had a great time and felt confident on the horse as we rode. While we did not book a private ride, our group ended up only being our family of three and it was a truly gorgeous day and awesome experience. If we lived local I would do this all the time!

Now, approximately 5 years later, we came back. there are many new amenities. New wash racks around the ranch. a rebuilt western arena, level with nice sand. Three new round pens. several new turnout pens. a nice pavilion near the rental stables. and several new restrooms. All of the employees that I encountered were very nice. Great job Gayle and staff! My son attended a 3 day camp in July and we recently took their 1 hour trail ride in Nov…read more We choose these particular activities as it was conducted outdoors with mask and social distancing requirements. There is a sink with soap to wash hands and a porta potty on location. A short walk away is the public restroom for the Rancho Potrero trailhead that is fairly new. For camp there was temperature screening upon arrival. For the trail rides there was a limit of 5 (family members or family pods), age 7 and up, and not more than 200 lbs. My 9 year old son enjoyed the camp more than the trail ride as it taught him basics and provided more opportunities to interact with the horses. He was the only boy at camp but he really likes animals. They went out on short walking rides only, which was plenty for my son. The trail ride was a full hour and we saw coyotes, hawks, and kites. Adults really enjoyed it, but it was a little long for the 7 year old. The other slightly unexpected occurrence was of the horses going through their natural bodily motions during the ride: fart, pee and poop. We were untouched, it just elicited alot of reaction from the kids. Since this is an outdoor activity, dressing for the weather is the main difference that will make your experience enjoyable. In July, we used thinner long pants with vented athletic wear shirts. For Nov, we wore jeans with double layered long sleeved shirts. They do not cancel except for extreme weather. Their website has more information about camps, lessons and rides. We had positive interaction and are grateful to have this facility close to us, and at a reasonable price. Just off Santa Rosa road you will find the Hill Canyon Trail which is a flat easy 3.8 mile out and…read moreback route located near the Santa Rosa Valley Park. The trail follows a creek that has a fair among of water and fish in it. I would not go in the water. This is a multi use trail where you will find hikers, runners and bikers. The Hills Canyon Trail is the gateway to many other trails such as Hawk Canyon and Western Plateau where you can cover greater miles with some elevation gain in the mountains. By connecting these trails, you can achieve over 5.0 miles. I would define the loop as easy to moderate with well-defined paths. The trail is quite wide in areas, so good to spot snakes. We saw a rattler on the Western Plateau portion. Along the river you should watch out for poison oak. Parking is free in a dirt lot. From the parking lot, enter the trail across the bridge. If you look down at the bridge you may spot the remains of a truck that went over- now explain that.

The in and outs are large, nice and light. A cool sea breeze floats in the afternoon cooling down the air, making this a great location for an afternoon lesson. Michelle is a very talented rider, an excellent trainer and a very confident horsewoman. Samba I first meet Michelle in our golden years and she was very happy to train us, we were still a working dressage pony. She helped through some old age issues to make Samba a circus pony , the 2 of us a long lining duo, leg yields, turn on the haunches, jumping little cross rails with even a lead change, little cross country logs and ditches. With Michelle's guidance I was able to ride Samba again at the age of 31!. Our last discipline was clicker training. Michelle and Sasha supported and cared for us until the bitter sweet end. Sasha Cohen is a great asset to the barn, she is a very hard working, reliable student. Under Michelle's guidance she has become a very strong, confident rider and Norman her horse a rock star.
