Came here on a weekday so it was easy to get a table, I hear it gets busy on weekends. Everyone working here was very nice, the food came out very quickly and was very tasty. We had the Nashville hot chicken which, while not particularly spicy, had great flavor. We also got the fried chicken and waffles and a salad. We sat outside because it was a nice day and it was a very pleasant way to enjoy brunch. Our total bill came out to about 40€ which was more than fair for how much food we got. All the reservations online said full, but we went anyway and got in with no issues. The coffee drinks are very good and they have a barista/bartender who makes them. I think that this is one of the better breakfast places I've been to in Amsterdam. Each of their dishes are well rounded and well priced. The prices were very fair for the amount of food that was served. The service was attentive and we did not feel rushed at all. The coffee here was the best I had yet in amsterdam. The iced maple coffee was super good and not too sweet. I got the Jacob combo and the potatoes were good, the flavors balanced well. Absolutely amazing brunch!! Can't recommend this place enough, we had a fabulous time here. We walked in first thing right after touching down at the airport. They have classic brunch fare with some indulgent and super delicious additions. The service is super fast and friendly, they indoor and outdoor patio seating with brunch drinks, coffee and wide ranges of options for food. I absolutely loved my eggs Benedict toast, but was blown away by the chicken and waffles, that friend chicken was so delicious it was our favorite meal of the trip. Alright so I was very excited to eat here! I was one of the first people to show up and my first breakfast in Amsterdam. Cute place, I didn't get to see the inside cause it was for reservation only (maybe the poached eggs were for reservation only idk) ((If you don't have a reservation, you have to sit outside))) I ordered the Jacobs Benedict, only to be told that they, "did not have poached eggs.. and if scramble were okay..." I said sure (in a very confused tone) because sounded like it really meant they just didn't want to prepare what the dish actually was and I was too hungry at the time to think about my response and realized I should of just ordered something else. Then arrived a plain toast with some bacon and watery scrambled egg mix on top. It was pretty disappointing to say the least. I also paid $40 in total for this breakfast, a latte, and my girlfriends meal (she barely touched her plate, also due to the eggs) my meal was $16, my girlfriends was $16, the latte was $4. So $36 + $4 of gratuity I guess? Over all pretty muggy that they still charged me for an eggs Benedict and I didn't get even close to that.. Another guy next to me tried to order it as well and was hit with the "we dont have poached eggs" (or maybe didn't have the cook that could poach eggs, idk) but he was pretty scrambled about it too and confused. Good place for brunch. Can get really busy, so reservations are recommended. In the evenings they serve Japanese food under the name KU kitchen & bar, but I haven't tried that yet. I always opt for the All Around (see picture). One order is big enough to share as it has three pancakes and lots of crispy fried potatoes, but I somehow always think I can manage to finish one by myself. Can get pricey, but you get a lot in return. read more

Staring at Jacob has a beautiful interior overlooking the canal on the Jacob van Lennepkade. We were seated immediately in the back even when it was bustling at noon. We were helped immediately, asked what we'd like to drink and served with a smile. yay! I had the benny hill (a take on eggs benedict with fish instead of bacon) and my mister had a little bit of everything with fluffy pancakes, eggs bacon and potatoes. 2 cappuccinos and and orange juice later, we needed to be rolled out of the place. Yep, I really love Staring at Jacob. Maybe a little too much. Part of that could be the delicious Bloody Mary's which have been so hard to find as of late. That or the Chai Old Fashioned. Aside from the great brunch drinks the food is outstanding. My first visit was on New Year's Day and we were certainly invested in trying it out proper. In fact we had three meals between the two of us. As a starter we shared fish tacos. They are breaded perfectly and covered in slaw, with what must be house made tortillas. Can you get corn tortillas in the NL? For the next two plates it was the fried chicken and waffles, along with the pork belly Benedict. Both dishes were great but the chicken and waffles certainly stands out. This coming from someone who hates chicken. Really, even though it was new year already I don't think I had a bite of chicken all of 2014. Oh wait! No I did have a bite of the ones at Fraiche. Somehow, these were better. On the second trip it was a blowout too. We were celebrating a friend getting her permanent contract so we sort of had to, right? for this mail I shared the pork belly Benedict and the chorizo omelette. even though the Benedict is great I think the omelettes beaded out with flavor. The tree so was nice and spicy in the pico de gallo gave it a nice freshness. I will certainly be back here again and again. Even though it's a little bit further bike ride then my local. read more

I went here a couple of months after I posted my original review, and I have to say that they have stepped everything up a notch! Service is lightning fast, friendly and attentive, the menu is polished and the food delicious, and the atmosphere is as wonderful as ever. The only "complaint" I still have is that all of their menu items are massive - I can never eat that much for breakfast. However, they have a hefty list of "sides" including things like 2 eggs any style and bacon, from which you can pick and choose to make your own (smaller, in my case) meal. And of course they make an insanely good Bloody Mary. I've just moved into their neighborhood and I think this will become my regular haunt! read more

My friends and I tried to call in for a reservation yesterday (12-31) to no avail.. so just the 2 of us decided to hoof it over today and try our luck at a bar spot. We were successful after a 10 minute wait, for which I am very grateful after meeting a local Ex-pat who stated he made a reservation here 1 month ago. o_O we live in philly, fishtown to be precise where brunch is the main meal of the day and it's served everywhere until 4pm everyday. So our expectations are somewhat high... the ambience is hip and lively. Very chic decor, bright and you can see the chef cooking from all over the restaurant. They have a wide variety of cool Cocktails, but we just ordered coffee as last night was NYE. :) the food was really great. The menu is extremely American, with complex dishes mixing textures and flavors... everything you're looking for at American brunch spot in Amsterdam! I had the not so kosher benny which was great, first time I've ever had salmon and bacon together on a Benedict. When we are back around Amstersam, we will definitely have a reservation for this joint. :) read more

I tried the French Toast with its bacon, banana caramel sauce, topped with cinnamon and little fruit compote, it was SO good! I definitely didn't expect banana and bacon to be that good together. Their coffees were really good as well, my flat white was perfect. Just beware of one thing: they don't take reservations! So if you show up for brunch, don't expect to get a table inside right away. Nice place for brunch. American style brunch (the menu was new for 2014) with some nice twists on classic combinations. I had the steak and eggs which was good. The hollandaise on the poached egg could have been a bit more flavoursome, but in general it was good. The cafe is nice and simple; the layout, design, menu, bill, stationary etc are nice and considered and follow the identity consistently. The music was great, not loud but complimented the style and atmosphere. Overall it was a nice place but they could improve the coffee, it's ok but today for a place like this the coffee needs to better than ok. Also the food just needs a bit more flavour (seasoning and just a bit more pop) The staff were friendly and helpful. I wish there new cafe success and I'm sure I will return. read more

Today we went to 'Staring at Jacob' to have brunch. I absolutely loved brunch at Noah's other place, Restaurant Fraiche, so I was excited about this place, which offers a more Californian style menu. It was pretty busy when we arrived and we had to wait a little while before we were being seated. The place getting hyped over the whole internet so I could imagine waiting for a table so this was not a problem for us. I really loved the interior at this place. Wooden tables, a little industrial feeling because of the bare bricks in the bar and the vintage lamps, but also nice wallpaper behind the bar and in the loungy area and the menu written on the wall. The place looks great, very urban and Brooklyn. The menu looked very nice. You could choose from seven brunch dishes and different sides. Our party ordered 'Tree hugger; quinoa, kale and chickpea salad with crispy tofu, yoghurt and granola', The All-around; fluffy pancakes, bacon, sausage, cheese eggs and home fries', The Rasco; fried chicken & waffles, maple syrup', Mexicano; tortillas, fried fish, corn salsa, smoked avocado and cheese eggs' and two side dishes; extra fries and extra sausage. The food arrived pretty quickly. Of these dishes (tried bites of everything, though I ordered the Tree hugger) I have to say that the Mexicano was by far the best dish. So I would recommend this one, when in doubt. The other dishes were okay, but I expected more of it after my other brunch at Fraiche, which was amazing. The food was okay, but it was just okay. Later on we heard that the kitchen + staff had a lot of stress because they were getting so much more costumers than their kitchen could actually handle and that was really noticeable in the quality of the food. I absolutely believe them, because I know (since I've tasted) that they can do better. I will be back to try the food again, when the hype has passed by and the staff is less stressed out. A little about the drinks; you can order cocktails with your brunch, very nice! Did not try this though, so I don't know about the quality yet. I had some nice white house wine with my food and afterwards a nice cappuccino. The pies I saw, chocolate and apple pie, looked really nice so I can imagine coming here for a cup of coffee and a piece of pie as well. So for now I will give 3 stars, because it the food was okay, the place looked great and the staff was very nice and friendly (would give 3,5 if possible though!). I really want to give more, so I'll be back and we'll see if I can give 4 stars (or maybe 5!) in the future. read more

Reading the other reviews of 'staring at Jacob' I almost can't believe I went to the same place. When I arrived it seemed like a nice place and from the things I've heard about the place I was really looking forward to it! We went to sit at a table and a waitress approached us to give us the menu in a manner which made me think she wasn't really happy to be there. Okay, I thought that might just have been her voice so I didn't really mind. She didn't ask if we wanted to drink anything though and walked off before I realized it. It wouldn't have mattered that much if somebody had come back quickly, but we had to wait for half an hour or so for anyone to come back to ask us if we wanted something! I was really thirsty but I couldn't get hold of a waiter or waitress because they just didn't come anywhere near us. I found this ridiculous and it already ruined my mood, so I hoped that at least the food would be nice. Disappointingly enough I didn't like the food either, although that might have been me, because the people who I went with did like it. We also ordered an extra beer while eating which also arrived twenty minutes later. In the end we didn't feel like staying for a dessert and asked for our bill. When we checked it they even messed up the bloody bill! From the beginning until the end they'd messed things up and put me in a bad mood, that's why I unfortunately have to give them a low rating. read more

They have a great cocktail menu and American classics such as chicken and waffles. Great vibe inside, warm and brown. Nice location along the canal too. I was there with a big group - many of them with specific dietary needs. The wait staff was struggling a bit to keep everything smooth, but that was understandable. The food was good. I asked for scrambled eggs, which is a simple thing to make, but also quite easy to get wrong. My scrambled eggs were well made that day and I had no complaints. It was a weekend day and pretty busy on the floor, so it was a bit of a challenge for my toddler who wanted to move around a bit and explore the place. read more
