On the 22nd of February my mother and I received foul, hateful and down right biggotted customer service in a Starbucks located at queen street west and john street Toronto. The management literally stopped taking my order to kick my very visibly Muslim mother out of her sitting place. He did so by turning chairs over and onto my mothers things. My mother was quite literally treated like a dog at this establishment.
Slightly Past 5pm my mother and i walked into this Starbucks. This location was relatively busy (approx. 20 other patrons) but we managed to Find spot a corner of the store with a taller table with three stools, two on the ground and one up on the table.
I had the impression there had bin a spill and some had forgotten to put the chair down after cleaning it up. so i turned it over and took it off the table to have a seat. We finally relax and now want to decide our drink choices
I went up the cash til and let my mom relax after the tiring walk she had endured to get there. I spoke with a man named Marc and upon first impressions I found him to be interesting. He was very witty and treated me with a great level of care - that was until he had spotted my mom- he immediately engagaed another memeber of his staff to attend to me because there was something he needed to 'handle'.
This was the most horrific part - a man of his stature approaching a 50 plus y/o women and being snide about chairs and tables while physically pushing my mothers things off of the table and upturning all chairs - Marc kicked my mother out of a Starbucks and spoke to her like an animal. I was taken aback with his demeanour once i called to speak with management - Marc was screaming and continuing his hate crimes Against us.
Marc had verbally abused my mother and scolded her for sitting down at a table that was not labelled or marked as a 'closed' section but because he scolded her like a dog and made her collect her things immediately I was shocked. He would not and did not treat me this way. I was perplexed but realised it is because
Marc who is the person who should ensure that all tables are accessible no matter race, creed or religion. He spoke to me in a 'normal' way (I.e. exercising unbiased customers service). The racism here exists due to Marc's inability to assist in treating myself (non visibly Muslim and my mother, visibly muslim) the same.
I was so disgusted I had to leave and take care of my shakes and disoriented mother, who was just treat in a subhuman fashion read more
