Cold-Hearted Management in a Moment of Need -- But a Shoutout to Saniya for Her Kindness We had a truly upsetting experience at this location, specifically due to the manager, Marie, whose behavior was unnecessarily aggressive, unkind, and completely lacking in basic human decency and abilities to be helpful. We fully recognize that our request was unorthodox -- we were three women traveling through Salem on a Sunday, caught in a bind when all the luggage storage options in town were unexpectedly closed. We only needed a safe place to leave our bags for two hours while we visited the Witch Museum. We were willing to pay, buy food and drinks, and even open our luggage to show we weren't carrying anything dangerous. We weren't demanding, just asking for a bit of grace & empathy in a stressful moment. Instead, Marie came out stomping, yelling, and treating us like a problem to get rid of. She spoke to us with utter disrespect, then slammed the door in our faces -- when a simple, "I'm sorry, we can't allow that," would have sufficed. The situation didn't call for hostility, and it was genuinely shocking to be treated so poorly when we were clearly in distressed and trying to be respectful. Thankfully, not everyone in the store was like that. The barista, Saniya, was a total angel. She showed compassion, patience, and understanding -- everything that Marie did not. Saniya saw our humanity and tried to help, even though her manager made it clear that kindness and customer service was not a priority in that moment. We understand that rules exist, but when people are clearly struggling and offering to compensate you for a small favor, you'd hope the person in charge could show some decency. Instead, Marie reminded us just how much people lack compassion when in power. But Saniya reminded us that there's still good out there, too. Thank you, Saniya and other male barista were truly be the type of humans that Starbucks should hire and promote. You were the light in a really disappointing situation. Food: The Iced Hazelnut Oat milk Shaken Espresso was AMAZING! Best Starbucks order I have ever had (what a treat for me haha), the coffee was strong and perfect! They also had these cute lil samples of "chocolate cold brew" & "Strawberries & Cream Frappuccino", which were both really good (definitely preferred the cold brew haha, SO good! The frappuccino was more of a dessert). Service: Workers were super nice, friendly, and happy! Especially because I loved the cold brew samples so much lol. I love this Starbucks during the week, but on the weekends it's always a mess. This is the third Saturday in a row I've gone in and the woman has asked for my name for my online order, wrote it down on a list and when my drink order came up... nothing. She didn't call the name on the label of the drink, nor did she mark as complete in the online system. She did look at the list and I assume she concluded the person wasn't here yet. So I sat there staring at the drink for a good 3 minutes (hey at least it wasn't 5 minutes like last time). Finally she put it on the table with the label out so I could go up and check. Sure enough, once again! Stop over complicating the process! Just call out peoples names as the drinks are ready, and let people check in with you when they arrive. Period. They also boast a killer variety of holiday lattes that I just cannot get enough of. So I'm not huge on writing reviews of chains, but there were some negative reviews that I feel are otherwise undeserved. I stopped in to buy a couple of things for my wife. Two coffee drinks for work and a cake pop. Service was quick, and the baristas (ugck, I feel annoyed at their title and their sizes. Hey starbucks, it's your biggest size, so it's a large. Who the hell are you to call it a 'venti' huh? I get that this noncomformist, but it's in the most annoying possible way. Her iced caramel machiatto (LARGE) was tasty, I tried a sip. She also enjoyed her doghnut cake pop. I felt it didnt look like a doughnut, but it was cute. Parking is metered, in the parking lot in front of the shop. So, have quarters on hand and available. I am glad that yuppies have bad experiences here, maybe they'll stay away from Salem. People that complain about "transients that sit around all day taking up seats" and others complaining that the Starbucks doesn't give them quarters to pay to park, please GTFO of the North Shore. Convenient location. Beyond excellent customer service from staff. My coupon expired one time and the barista honored it anyways. I was definitely impressed. Great guy! They have a huge variety of drinks, Danishes/pastries and really good banana bread. Cake pops are a must on almost every trip. Around the holidays they have exclusive drinks/flavors. I loved the Frankenstein frappuccino they had for Halloween and the eggnog latte. On a regular day I almost always go with iced caramel macchiato. Service is fine. But if you want to have a seat, they are mostly occupied by non customers. I have to always get my stuff to go. Today one of the non-customers had their toothbrush and occupied the restroom for a period of time. While two others just camped out, as another brought in their lunch and can of soda. While paying customers have to leave because there is no place to work or have a conversation with their Friend. This is really becoming a problem. I went there this weekend and had a great experience. I ordered and paid for a drink with oat milk. I was informed a couple of minutes later that they ran out of oat milk and they asked if I wanted to substitute with a different kind if milk. They also gave me a card for "$4 off your next drink." I thought this was so nice of them to do this for me even though I was fine substituting with almond milk. This is my "go-to" Starbucks so the 1 Star is just based on my experience yesterday. I worked at a Starbucks for YEARS so I KNOW creating the best experience and providing quality product is the priority. That was not the case here. I walked in with a friend and we were the only people in line. We waited 5 minutes before Rich acknowledged me and said sharply said "Know you want". Uhhhh ... I was a little surprised he didn't say "hi" or ask me how I was or make any attempt to be friendly but okay ... I ordered my Trente unsweetened green tea lemonade, he didn't ask for my name, didn't ask if I wanted anything else (I did but forget it) and waited at the end of the bar for Hayley to make it. She didn't even look at the cup markings (which were wrong) when she started pumping classic into the shaker. I said that I didn't want it sweetened and she reluctantly grabbed another cup, made a venti, shoved too much ice in it and tossed it on the bar. Okay, "thank you so much! Have a great, day too" I thought as I chiseled my straw in and walked out. My drink is pure lemonade with a splash of green tea. She didn't even bother to use the right measurements to compose the drink. Starbucks, I love you. This experience does not reflects how I feel about you as a company but ... EVERY TIME. this is the polar opposite of the experience you will have across the street at dunkin donuts, where they will get it wrong EVERY TIME. shit. i've only been to that dunkin donuts twice, but it's because after the second time of screwing up, i figured it was a fancy little trend. the service is very fast and friendly in here. also, it's one of the only places in salem on my route to the train station that is open, other than the two dunkin donuts pieces of shit that i pass, at 6:30 in the morning. convenience is a big factor here. everything is done well, too. you know how sometimes a coffee doesn't seem as fresh, or your chai isn't as flavorful as last time? that'll never happen here. it's nice place to hang out for a little while, too. the seats are spread out enough that you don't feel like you're sharing your innermost secrets with the dude to the right. read more

Compounding this was the service, let's just say " not with a smile" , not crowded, in fact the I was the only ordering customer, -not busy time so you would think with two barristers standing there I could get a pour over w/o a problem right ? - if looks could kill, - I was delivered a grounds infested cup of broth colored water - so weak , void of any strength - hot water. Once I asked for another, still the only customer, she glared at me , silent , dagger eyes, and made another cup. It was fine except for all the grounds in it - but I'll take it. Coming from Boston, I was rather impressed with this Starbucks. Now, I know, this is a chain coffee shop, but hey, each location has their own distinct feeling and vibe. Some (such as Boylston & Berkeley) are extremely busy and fast food feeling where others (Harvard Yard, Kendall Square) feel more community coffee house. Whatever, go with me here. Despite the semi-awkward location (feels like a strip mall rather far from downtown, I think?) the inside is cozy and comfortable. The bathrooms are super clean (well, I went in once the barista finished cleaning, so it ought to have been) and the ambiance was great. I ordered a green tea latte with peppermint (for you ex/current-Starbuckers out there, it's good, trust me, try it!) and it wasn't awful. I would have liked some extra foam, but hey, what can you do? It's a chain, have low expectations and you're golden to go. read more

It's my least favorite Starbucks in the world... no scratch that there is a terrible one in Washington DC... it's one of the older Starbucks so they need to update their decor. It's the location is a pain. It's kind of tucked in and you have to do a weird loop usually to get there. You have to pay parking at the meter as well. What can I say-it's Starbucks. You can usually count on your drinks being consistent & there's definitely something to be said for such predictability. I typically frequent the locally owned establishments in Salem when I'm out & about, especially when I'm in need of an espresso drink-I want my fix pulled by a human, not a machine-but, I like this location because it's within a stone's throw of my condo downtown, making it easy to pop in if I need a quick jolt of joe & to grab the NYT on Sundays.
