I had to check this out. They have a business on Loudon Road in Latham. It's lovely. A bright, clean spacious coffeehouse with big windows and even a tree. There's signage when you walk in that celebrates Yemen's long coffee legacy. The seating isn't normal. Some of the tables and chairs are modern and minimalistic. The fabric couches have plush cushions featuring Yemeni fabric designs. The staffers at the counter were polite and friendly. As for the coffees and desserts, they were out- of- this-world. A few of them featured cardamom. It's a spice from the ginger family that I cook with but I never thought to add to my coffee. They were Iced Marib and a Qamaria Latte. The cake was delicious, too. I think it was a slice of pistachio cheesecake. Yemeni cafes seem to have become a trend across the country and it's no wonder. I stepped into this business and found myself transported to a very different and delicious world filled with history. It was a fun, tasty and even educational experience. Can't beat that.

Established in 2017 in Michigan, it now operates 30 stores throughout the country. Let's start with pastries. Khaliat Alnahl (Honeycomb) - "A Yemeni dessert consisting of soft pull apart buttery cheese filled rolls drizzled with honey." Think of a dolled-up monkey bread with a slightly tangy cream cheese filling. The top of the bread is browned giving it a satisfying crunch and the honey brings it over the top with floral sweetness. Lollipop bites - either strawberry or chocolate. Yeah, they're small but they punch above their weight class. They're ganache-like and dense/rich, enrobed by flavored icing. For me, the least satisfying of the bunch, and we tried quite a few, was the citrus vanilla cake. There were layers of cake and filling inside. It seemed just a bit dry; the cake layers seemed to want to be brushed with a citrus glaze. OK, now to the coffee drinks. This was a revelation for me. Mofawar - medium roast coffee brewed with cardamom, milk or cream. The cashier asked if I wanted honey in it...sure, just a bit. Word of caution: Hot! I attempted to taste the coffee concoction and slightly burnt my tongue. That's on me. I would recommend waiting a few minutes. Waiting also allows the finely ground coffee to steep and settle in your cup. Yeah, the coffee grounds are not filtered out, they remain in your cup. Stop drinking when you get to the dregs. Guess how I know that. The cream cut the bitterness of the coffee and gave the drink more body. It was the addition of cardamom that set off something in my brain. It was a bright note in the coffee. Something that elevated a good cup of coffee into something more unique. First time I've ever had cardamom in coffee but it won't be the last. Qishir - a tea like drink made with dried coffee cherry husks and spices such as cinnamon and ginger. It reminded me of lemon tea. First time for that, too. Yup, I'll be back. Qahwah House is one of three Yemeni coffee franchises in Latham, NY. The others are Qamaria and Shibam. What is it about this town that can support this density of Yemeni coffee houses? I don't know but I'm not complaining. I'll head to those other establishments later.
