Carpe Diem is a charming coffee shop set in a quaint old Victorian house, and is popular in Mobile…read morefor a reason. They roast their beans in house, and the staff is always friendly. For instance, advised that my daughter was shy when the kid hesitated to order one day, the barista brightened up even more and put the girl at ease. Whether their coffee is good or not is completely subjective. I think it's good overall, but it might not be my first choice in town. But it's made with care, and as mentioned, roasted in house. Its popularity speaks to its quality. They also have a very good selection of pastries and other goodies to accompany your coffee, including a Mobile institution--cheesecake from a local company called Cotton Blues. The only gripe I have about Carpe Diem is their seating setup. There simply isn't enough of it. That said, I don't know how they could use the space more efficiently, since the cafe is small as it is. I prefer more private seating, which in other coffee houses I've been to has been accomplished with the judicious use of plants or high-backed chairs. The biggest component of the crowded seating is due to students from Springhill College across the street. Today, for instance, my husband and I were unable to find any seating at all. Even on the days when we can find seating, being entirely surrounded by people working quietly on their laptops feels awkward and lends a library-like feel to the atmosphere. It feels rude to have a conversation at a regular level. I feel like I'm intruding. I don't know how a coffee shop should handle this conundrum, as it's really not good business practice to limit customers' time while there, or to turn away clientele, even in an attempt to please all of their customers. There is already a back room which seems to be an unofficial space dedicated to students, but the overflow still takes up much of the cafe. That said, I enjoy Carpe Diem and going there is a nice little treat. I would definitely recommend it.

Hear me out, I have been passing by this place for months, maybe years, and not given it a second thought. I messed up, this place deserves attention and some love. From the smash burger that I didn't want to like, to the avocado toast that killed it as probably the best version of that dish that I've ever had. The burger was good, beefy and with a decent sear, the brioche bun was nice and sweet. The pickle was really good, didn't love it on top of my bun when I already had it in between the buns as ordered. I sampled my wife's avocado toast and $&@", that was awesome. The restroom was clean and surprisingly well adorned with decor. I really love the vibe of this place. This is a five star review up to this point. Didn't love the 95 health department score with a paragraph of writing at the bottom. The service area was dirty with spilled coffee grounds and spilled drink product visible. I didn't love the staff experience, and for such a well thought out restaurant design, menu, decor and experience, that is the one variable. I will come back, I will bring others and encourage other folks to try. This is a cubic zirconia diamond in the rough and nearly a real diamond in the rough. I want to try your other burgers and brunch offerings. The pickles, if they aren't house made it will break my heart because those were killer spice blend. Chef can I barrow your recipe???

My drink was ready first so I sat a little bit and waited for my egg rolls. The staff was very helpful. I asked for some sauce for my egg rolls and one of the staff went next door to get a little cup for the sauce. The tea was really good. I have some oolong tea at my house that I like. Their tea was sweetened to perfection. The 80% was very accurate to my tastes. The order of egg rolls were 2 very warm and crispy egg rolls. They seemed to be very well made.
