Regular readers of my reviews will be aware that I am a huge fan of the Starbucks brand, visiting their stores regularly as a sure stop along my travels but their branch here in Leeds city centre on Albion Street, seems to be getting worse every time I visit.
From the outside, the building is magnificent, large and impressive, opposite Leeds Trinity but on the inside, it just feels minimal and depressing, they've removed all the comfortable seating now, with the few seats and tables that remain to be hard, not ideal for working or staying for a long time.
This is a city centre branch so can get quite busy, the queuing system seems to be handled so badly here, I was waiting 15 minutes just to order my drink at one point, and mobile orders seem to be processed much slower than orders placed at a manned checkout, meaning there isn't much benefit through using the app. Even with a queue of people waiting, almost outside of the door, there was one staff member working the till, at one point it did appear to have two staff members on the same till - If they're going to train employees fair enough, but why do it when the store is extremely busy at a peak time?
The staff members seemed distracted, and weren't even paying attention or attempting to provide faster service for customers in the queue, nor did they apologise for the waiting time.
Beverage quality also seems to be suffering here, I most recently visited and my Venti Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte, had too much of the pumpkin syrup, with most of it unstirred at the bottom (nasty), my friend also complained about the bitterness of her drink, down to the espresso being burnt.
This building is one of my favourites on Albion Street from the exterior, I would personally hate to see this empty, but I worry with the standards of overall service (speed, friendliness of staff) and beverage quality continue, this building could be as good as gone soon. The interior does have some nice parts but can become depressing rather quickly, although I understand the development inside is probably limited due to the listed building status.
That being said, I probably wouldn't visit this branch again unless I was in a hurry. 2* read more
