Mrs Atha's - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Leeds, XWY

Since moving to Leeds I've been trying to find a good coffee shop to replace my favourite back in York. Next stop was Mrs Atha's. Trying to locate Mrs Atha's was not the easiest. The proverbial vulture circling in the sky looking for its prey I eventually located and headed towards. You'd be forgiven for following suite, the outside is painted black to match the shops that surround it. This is a slight downfall from it's location and one I presume they have no control over due the nature of the area. Time to take the plunge, my caffeine levels where dropping rapidly. Upon entering you are greeted with the feeling of entering a cave, dark and sparsely lit. On your right is the coffee station, to your left are the stairs downstairs and in front a selection of eclectic seating. A warm greeting was given and after a short perusal I plumbed for my statuary cappuccino. Now normally it takes about 15 seconds for me to place an order but this never happened. My eyes kept wandering, looking at the delights and my mouth kept watering. I have a weak spot for chocolate and cakes and my knees started to tremble. Laid before was a bevvy of delights for me to try. I had to have a nibble and so I did. Just a quick nibble, a little delight, a chocolate truffle shaped piece of heaven. So I ordered my cappuccino and truffles and was asked to take a seat while my coffee was readied. Unfortunately upstairs was full to the brim so I plumbed for a seat downstairs. That was a shame, upstairs is quaint, quirky and generally original. What a difference to upstairs. Crammed between the entrance to the toilets and a small kitchen area are a few seats/tables, the highlight being an old school desk. Not the atmosphere I thought it would be. While talking to the friendly staff member while she cooked was nice it's not the type of area I really want to sit and enjoy a coffee. I think if I come back I'll make sure I get a seat upstairs. My coffee arrived after about 5 minutes along with my truffles and I sat back to do some work and enjoy my caffeine fix. I know there are people that like a drink as hot at the inside of a volcano and I know there are those that like to tip it down their throats but me, I like to sip on it over a period of 30 minutes to enjoy the full potential of the ground beans. This could not happen with this coffee. By the time 5 minutes had reached my coffee was on the verge of the next Ice Age. Not good. Don't get me wrong, it's a damn fine coffee, not as good as La Bottega/Laynes but damn good non the less. So in a nut shell, the coffee was good (if a little too cold), the downstairs is not good, the truffles AMAZING and the service good indeed. I will return if only to try more chocolaty delights. read more

This is just a quickie. Basically, if you want game changing scrambled eggs, Mrs Atha's is your huckleberry. Literally the most buttery delicious eggy best I've had the pleasure of knowing. I don't actually know what witchcraft is going on here, but it's my kind of hex. The halloumi salad nearly made me cry. It was created by a wizard, and dappled with pomegranate star dust. Drizzled in tears of balsamic. The pancakes are thick. Slathered in maple. Teased by a temptation of fruit. Sumptuous, disgracefully excellent. The tea, the coffee, the cakes. If you've not had the brioche cake you probably don't even know you're alive. Mmm. That sweeeeet sweet brioche. Spankingly naughty. Stop it. I love the men here, all of whom make me my favourite treats. And the lovely girls too. It's a wonderful place. The coffee is 42. (I hope that makes sense.) read more

If you walked down Central road (behind House of Fraser) you'd be likely to miss this place as it seems to either be part of Little Tokyo or just doesn't stand out- well, appearances can be deceptive. I met the lovely Rowena here Tues for coffee and a catch up. I'm not a massive coffee drinker so I asked the server for his opinion of a refreshing Tea- he recommended the Jasmine Che and i ordered some sourdough toast to go with it to deter me for the eye bogglingly gorgeous cakes they offer! Sadly, most contain nuts which are my arch enemy so better to be safe than sorry I decided just on toast. £4.50 for both. Being comforted that the staff actually have knowledge of the field they are working I sat down and took in the wonderful quirky setting with the chintz and fab 'feature' wall. An eclectic mix of people were eating/having coffee or just generally having a catch up and the staff don't seem to want to rush you off. The tea was served in a wonderful T-pot with a jug of milk and gorgeous crockery- all felt very grown up and civilised. My toast arrived shortly after. Rowena had coffee and big fat juicy syrup and blueberry pancakes which i could have stolen off her plate they looked that good!! The T was just as described and it didn't take long for me to polish both T and toast off. The staff are attentive without being pushy and the menu offers a good selection of coffee and Tea options as well as breakfast and sandwich/lunch options. Everything served looked fresh and tasty so I'll definitely be heading back to sample more. There is plenty of seating on the first floor and apparently a downstairs offering more space. I called in Mrs Atha's today after a reccomendation, looking to escape the cold in Leeds however I left dissapointed and still looking for a coffee shop. The staff didn't stand out to be friendly or help me out find a table, I wasn't even greated, it was like I wasn't even their looking at the menu. They isn't a lot of seating upstairs as it was packed and felt crammed with most of it being down a flight of stairs, I didn't fancy all them stairs and it was hard to move about on the top floor because of the counter and when someone is ordering you can't really get past. Mrs Atha's has received so many 5 star reviews so the coffee must be out of this world but the service and crammed nature for me, left me looking for somewhere else to go, I found Love Coffee but that was even worse. I feel 2 stars is fair for this place because my experience was very bad and I don't feel it is fair to give one star as I didn't try out any of their food or drinks. read more

Popped in to escape the rain, warm up with a coffee and fill up on cake. Not for the first time, I was given pretty poor service - told quite rudely that I couldn't have an Americano as it is 'the wrong way to have coffee'. Surely the best way to serve a coffee is the way the customer ordered it? With my first order refused (and the rain still coming down) I picked something else. After all this, the coffee was sure to be great. Sadly, it was just average. In a city with so many coffee shops, serving mediocre coffee with poor customer service doesn't cut it. Luckily the cakes - although not baked in-house - were great. Generous portions, just the right amount of sickly-sweet, and plenty of choice. If you can avoid the staff and coffee, maybe pop in for a cake. Or better yet, go to Laynes Espress, Bottega Milanese, Opposite where everything is top notch. read more

I've heard good things about Mrs Atha's food and coffee, but I was taken by a friend for our habitual tea and cake. It's kind of the quirky hipster, kind of nostalgic tea room that you expect now, but Mrs Atha's has been doing it longer than most. There are some comments about rude or indifferent staff- i've Never had that here, range of teas, cosy atmosphere, and rather damn sexy cake. It isn't huge, and I've never been in here and it's quiet, you have to spy a seat or wait patiently. read more

Whenever I arrive in a new city, my first order of business is finding a proper cafe - and Mrs. Atha's is just that. I only spent a couple days in lovely Leeds, but this place was like a second home for me. The white chocolate berry cake is heavenly, the cappuccinos are fab, and it's the perfect place to chill with your laptop on a chilly day. Prices are a bit steep, but coming from Los Angeles £2.5 toast almost seems reasonable. The staff is marvelous - special shout-out to my girl Nicole - and are more than happy to sneak you an extra coffee. I'll truly miss this place. If you like your Coffee shops dark and intimate then this is the right place for you. Slightly off the main shopping drag it's an oasis in the craziness of the city centre. Yes it's not massive , and yes it's occasionally full (a good sign) but the coffee is excellent as are the cakes. I'm partial to their bacon sandwiches in the morning as well! They display art by local artists on the walls to the downstairs section, where as the main floor has one wall filled with tongue in cheek 'old masters' the opposite wall is kept blank, which offsets the room nicely. You may have to share one of the big long heavy wooden tables with other customers, but that's not a problem as Mrs Athas attracts a nice friendly clientell. My friend and I had arranged to meet for coffee, but were totally unsure (and, let's face it, completely indecisive) as to where to go. Bored the yawnsome chains with the same selection of cake and cardboard paninis we fancied something a bit different. We bumped into another friend and told him about our coffee-date conundrum and he recommended we try Mrs Atha's. But in a much more enthusiastic way, like: "OOOH! You should go to Mrs Atha's - their coffee and cake is really, really good. I went there last week and I could have stayed in there all day." So we did. We pushed through the door and into the warm and cosy cafe. It's not your generic coffee shop: bare brick walls, wooden floors, low-hanging lights, there's something really quite unique about the place. Inside, it's dark, but not gloomy - atmospheric maybe? My friend ordered coffee and I ordered a piccolo. "What's a piccolo?" asked my friend. I was grateful that the guy behind the counter explained as he did so in a much more knowledgeable (and concise) manner than I could. "It's also a musical instrument." I piped in, trying to be funny. "Like a small recorder or something. But I don't think that's relevant right now." Then we quizzed the staff about the array of cakes on offer. They had three different kinds of chocolate brownie. I chose the triple chocolate (because I don't do things by halves). We were told to take a seat and that our order would be brought over to us. We sat down at a long table that occupies a large section of the upstairs space. Some people are a bit funny about sitting at a table where other people are sitting. You know... Other people - strangers and whatnot - but I quite like it. It all adds to the cosy ambience of the place. Plus, there isn't that weird animosity over the comfy chairs like in so many chain coffee shops. Sometimes, if the comfy seats are occupied, people who really want to sit there get a bit twitchy about it. Then they sit at a table close to you - their eyes burning into the back of your head until eventually you feel so uncomfortable that you just have leave. Anyway, that doesn't happen here, because all the chairs are comfy. And maybe the people are nicer - they're not the sort of chair-turfers you might encounter elsewhere. Anyway, my piccolo was delicious, and beautifully presented in a short glass on a Blue Willow (I think) saucer. My brownie was rich in chocolatey goodness (as you'd expect from a triple-chocolate treat), and all very reasonably priced. It's a relaxing place with a calm and cosy atmosphere - so much so that I really did feel like I could stay there all day. My friend and I are constantly trying to find a spare moment in our week to go again. We've been known to fall out if one of us goes there without the other. Been to this establishment twice the last time was decidedly unpleasant. My friend and I sat upstairs as the downstairs is a cramped white washed low ceiling dungeon would not recommend. I ordered my tea which was £3.85 for a small teapot the tea was mediocre at best whilst I was trying to drink this dish water I was swatting away numerous fruit flies which I thought was disgusting. I asked to speak to the owner who when he came over was decidedly arrogant rude and very hard to deal with. I was basically told he couldn't do anything about the fruit flies as the front door was open and he insinuated he couldn't see the offending flies which upset me and I came to the conclusion I would never set foot in this mediocre establishment again. My quest for Leeds top cup of coffee continues and Mrs Atha's is certainly right up there with the best. Located behind House of Fraser down a quiet-ish side street, it is not the kind of place you stumble upon, instead it is somewhere to seek out. Mrs Atha's offers a range of interesting brewed coffee alongside the more usual espresso based drinks. I particularly like the way the brewed coffee comes in its own dinky little jug, enabling you to top up your cup as you wish. By comparison, the espresso based drinks are a little on the bitter side so I would opt for a brewed coffee if you are calling by. Alongside the coffee comes a range of cakes and savoury snacks. I must admit that I am slightly in love with the treacle tart here which is both sweet and buttery. This often makes an excellent companion to my coffee. The cakes in general come in huge sizes and (providing you come with an appetite) represent good value for the quality on other. The savoury offerings are equally lovely. The soup, at £4 a bowl, is a lunchtime favourite as are all of the breakfast items which are served all day, in particular the scrambled eggs which come with optional bacon or sausage on the side. After seeing some positive reviews for this place across Yelp I decided I would treat myself to breakfast here this morning. The decor is lovely, the coffee tasty and the cakes looked incredible. I didn't go for one (something I am still regretting now) but instead scrambled eggs on toast. Deep yellow buttery eggs and tasty toast certainly filled a gap! There are not enough places in Leeds that do a good breakfast that isn't greasey spoon themed. It's not very obvious that it's there from the outside but I get the impression from the hipsterish vibe that the owners would quite enjoy the 'need to know' about it exclusivity. It lost a star only because every other customer in there this morning seemed to already know the staff and I felt a little like I was missing out on the cool club. I'm sure that was just coincidence and I'm probably just being picky. I shall certainly be back and will be singing the praises of this new little independent delight far and wide. read more

I've been back loads of times for coffee (always a five star experience for me) but this time the lady and I were hankering for some lunch! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, she ordered a goat's cheese and beet sarnie, and we finished things off with a brioche and treacle tart. My sandwich was good, if not great. The bread was perfect and the meat was good but I wish there was more of it. My sides definitely left something to be desired though. The crisps were standard faire and I'd have loved to have some interesting (or any) flavour options for them but c'est la vie. However, the coleslaw was downright dreadful. I'm sad to say that it had no flavour whatsoever which is pretty much the worst mistake you can make. So much of good bbq relies on killer sides to compliment the slow cooked meat and Mrs. Atha's (sadly) lost major points with me due to lackluster sides. The goat's cheese and beet sandwhich was nice and tasty though. The absolute, stand-out, winner was the tart. I mean, seriously, how do they do it?!? This thing was moist, delicate, and went down so sweet and smooth. If I could nick the recipe, I'd do it in a heartbeat. So, at the end of the day, I love Mrs. Atha's for coffee and treats but will avoid their bbq due to weak sides. Next time I'm going for French Toast or Pancakes! read more

Mrs Arthas also boasts some of the best coffee and lattes the city has to offer. A wonderful little gem found tucked away from the busy city it provides a great getaway for a meeting with friends or a quick coffee date. Good food. Good treats and cakes. Now that Dock St Market is gone, this may be a new favorite. They have all the cute stuff of hipsterness without the annoying stuff. Good coffee, good tea, I haven't tried most of the food but I'm really excited about it! You are in for a treat at this independent, family run coffee/tea shop in Leeds! I think the only bad thing about it was that it is quite small, so it can be tough to get a seat. Everything else was unique and made our visit quite special! It is dim inside, but that makes the interior feel sort of calm and relaxing after coming in from the busy street. I like the brick walls and the general hipster-y rustic touches. The menu looked amazing and was written on chalkboards. I wish we'd been hungry enough for a meal, but instead we got a nutella brownie and I split a large pot of chamomile tea with my friend. My boyfriend got a decaf latte, and my friend's fiancé got an espresso. They brought it all out to our table - on real plates, and in real china teacups! I mean, where on earth can you get that? When our teapot came, they brought out a timer and said once three minutes had passed, the tea would have steeped to the proper strength. It seems pretentious, but honestly it's brilliant. Tea that's too weak or too strong can be nearly ruined, and you want to taste it as it's supposed to be tasted. I was disappointed that chamomile was their only herbal tea (though it was lovely) - even their mint tea was 50% caffeinated green tea. My boyfriend's latte had some nice foam art of a tree or a leaf, and my friend's fiancé's espresso came with this hilariously tiny bottle of water. Not being an espresso drinker, I'm not sure why that was necessary, but it was quite the charming touch! Our brownie was quite big and I think only £2, and we devoured it happily. We passed a very pleasant hour here, drinking from our china cups - pinky up of course, how can you not? Despite some of the excessive touches like the timer and the wee bottle of water and the china cups, this place is not pretentious at all. Two or three visits now and i'm still loving this place. As much as anything else i love that it exists. This type of thing Leeds doesn't seem keen on doing. It's what makes places like Manchester livable and places like Dublin extra special. Tea Houses are brilliant. They're not required to do extravagant food as far as i'm concerned. Good cake, great tea and coffee. Do this, in a comfortable environment and i'm content. Atha's ticks all those boxes easily enough. Inside this small café, you are immediately greeted by the smell of coffee beans and a display of a number of delicious-looking cakes. The café has everything that a trendy café has, rustic wooden tables with uneven surfaces, blackboard with hand-written menu and the aforementioned cake display! Yes. I'm totally sold. Rather rare for these trendy cafes that pride themselves for their superior skill of coffee making and expensive haircuts, they have a very good selection of teas. As a non-coffee drinker, I always feel awkward when I order tea at these places that are clearly catered for coffee lovers. So it was comforting to see this café shows at least a gesture towards poor minority of people that I belong to. I ordered a masala chai tea and a slice of lemon/ berry cake. The cake was very tasty and refreshing. But the texture was a let down. It was very crumbly and hard to eat. The weird baby folk (imagine a folk the size of a tea spoon) they gave me didn't help either. This place came recommended by a barrista at another coffee shop (cheeky I know). He was right the coffee is delicious. As are the cakes (gluten free too) and breakfasts. I love a good bunch in cute cafe with character (reminds me of a few places in Manchester's NQ). I'd describe the staff as unassuming. Very friendly, not in your face. I think they let the menu do the talking. My only change would be space. Knock through into next door and the atmosphere with more space to move would be perfect. read more

If your idea of a perfect coffee is one served by bespectacled hipsters then this is the place for you! We had a flat white and an Earl Grey and both were great, but the highlight was the delicious banoffington cake. Downsides? While the busy place does have a good atmosphere it can feel a bit cramped, and despite the number of people working there service seemed a tad slow. I've been a long time customer of Mrs Athas and it comes with the highest recommendation possible from me! All of the staff are friendly and knowledgable, and since I visit so often, we are all on first name terms, with many staff members remembering my favourite drinks, food orders and personal preferences. I adore the decor, it feels like a little haven in the middle of a busy city and is always full of wonderful, creative people! I recommend the salted caramel brownie! It's so delicious! I adore this little gem in Leeds city centre. Squirreled away behind House of Fraser, it is not to be missed (though I don't want to rave too much and never be able to get a table again!) They serve phenomenal coffee, hot chocolate and home made cakes. They also cater for vegetarians and vegans which is a rarity in Leeds. The staff are super friendly and quick and the vintage decor is gorgeously quaint. I love the mismatched tea sets and long benches so you have to sit with strangers (who you may leave as new acquaintances). The lemon, almond and polenta cake was my favourite last time, but they change the menu so often I need to try what's new! The toilets are also a novelty and the ladies loo has a vintage Vivienne Westwood corset in a gilt frame. I'm going to try the lunch menu next time as it looks delicious. The coffee at this place is *really good*. And, the people making the coffee are quite knowledgeable and talented. Atha's is, along with Layne's, the home of the best coffee in Leeds. If you want great coffee done correctly, then this is your place. The upstairs space is quite attractive, with high ceilings, shabby-chic decor and gorgeous reclaimed wood. There is a large table that is quite nice and several smaller tables going toward the back. Additionally, a lot of thought has been put into the small touches: the cutlery and tea cups are all worth a careful look. They are little wonders. Some might find the lighting a bit dark on the main floor. Others might find it really pleasant - a sort of hideaway. Downstairs it is bright and cheery but maybe a bit cramped. I accidentally discovered Mrs Athas the day it opened. Since then my life in Leeds became brighter and got a better taste. Let's start with the coffee. With at least two available blends (house and guest) every week, the quality of the coffee can satisfy the most caffeine-wanting maniac! Usually the blends are citrousy with a playful palette. If you want to give yourself a coffee treat, have the espresso flight, a cappuccino with a small espresso on the side to try the full potential of the coffee's taste. What can I say about the food. One dish is better than the other. If I was a zombie, the food at Mrs Athas would make me forget about brains. The sandwiches are amazing, but the scrambled eggs are simply spectacular (yes that was a Spiderman joke). Try the pulled pork sandwich, try the pancakes, try the eggs, try the soup, try the eggs, try the salads and try the eggs AGAIN! Oh let me tell you something about the cakes. I'm pretty sure they make them of unicorns dipped in rainbow sauce. They are out of this world (hint hint try the mocha cake but if you get the last piece I am going to find and make you regret it!! The place itself is very cozy and stylish. Various artists exhibit their work from time to time on the side of the staircase and in the basement. The music is great and simply on the background in order not to interrupt interesting conversations over coffee. Yes internet addicts, they do have free wi-fi. Last but definitely not least, the people who work there. Even if the coffee was bad and tasted like ink, if the food tasted like McMutants, I would still go there because of the great people. The people working at Mrs Athas are fantastic, go there a couple of times chat with them and they ll make you feel like they are old friends. In addition to that, really awesome people hang out at this place (exhibit A the person right this review), so if you drop by don't hesitate saying hello to anyone sitting across the table. I accidentally discovered Mrs Athas the day it opened. Now I go there at least 4 times a week even for a quick coffee, and the days I don't, they simply feel wrong. Great coffee, amazing cakes and a big shop (finally a Leeds coffee indie with some seating space!) mean this is the best place in the city centre to sit with a warm drink and chat away to your mates. Nice decor that's maybe a little bit too fussy, but just about works, usually raises a chuckle for newbies which I guess is part of the idea. My only complaint was the low level of lighting, that can make it difficult if you're gonna kill an hour in there with a book or newspaper. read more

Perfect for long lunches or quick catchups. Again this cafe is a welcome alternative to chain coffee shops. My friends and I love the atmosphere, we've been here at all times and all seasons and it never fails to suit the occasion. We love the pancakes and the cake options. Indoor seating for the colder months and outdoor when it warms up. Tucked away round the corner of the main shopping street, so away from most of the crowds and noise.
