If you walked down Central road (behind House of Fraser) you'd be likely to miss this place as it seems to either be part of Little Tokyo or just doesn't stand out- well, appearances can be deceptive. I met the lovely Rowena here Tues for coffee and a catch up. I'm not a massive coffee drinker so I asked the server for his opinion of a refreshing Tea- he recommended the Jasmine Che and i ordered some sourdough toast to go with it to deter me for the eye bogglingly gorgeous cakes they offer! Sadly, most contain nuts which are my arch enemy so better to be safe than sorry I decided just on toast. £4.50 for both. Being comforted that the staff actually have knowledge of the field they are working I sat down and took in the wonderful quirky setting with the chintz and fab 'feature' wall. An eclectic mix of people were eating/having coffee or just generally having a catch up and the staff don't seem to want to rush you off. The tea was served in a wonderful T-pot with a jug of milk and gorgeous crockery- all felt very grown up and civilised. My toast arrived shortly after. Rowena had coffee and big fat juicy syrup and blueberry pancakes which i could have stolen off her plate they looked that good!! The T was just as described and it didn't take long for me to polish both T and toast off. The staff are attentive without being pushy and the menu offers a good selection of coffee and Tea options as well as breakfast and sandwich/lunch options. Everything served looked fresh and tasty so I'll definitely be heading back to sample more. There is plenty of seating on the first floor and apparently a downstairs offering more space. The decor is very interesting and quirky so you have to go just to nosey at this.

I called in Mrs Atha's today after a reccomendation, looking to escape the cold in Leeds however I left dissapointed and still looking for a coffee shop. The staff didn't stand out to be friendly or help me out find a table, I wasn't even greated, it was like I wasn't even their looking at the menu. They isn't a lot of seating upstairs as it was packed and felt crammed with most of it being down a flight of stairs, I didn't fancy all them stairs and it was hard to move about on the top floor because of the counter and when someone is ordering you can't really get past. Mrs Atha's has received so many 5 star reviews so the coffee must be out of this world but the service and crammed nature for me, left me looking for somewhere else to go, I found Love Coffee but that was even worse. I feel 2 stars is fair for this place because my experience was very bad and I don't feel it is fair to give one star as I didn't try out any of their food or drinks.

This white chocolate berry cake has officially ruined all other cakes for me.

Whenever I arrive in a new city, my first order of business is finding a proper cafe - and Mrs. Atha's is just that. I only spent a couple days in lovely Leeds, but this place was like a second home for me. The white chocolate berry cake is heavenly, the cappuccinos are fab, and it's the perfect place to chill with your laptop on a chilly day. Prices are a bit steep, but coming from Los Angeles £2.5 toast almost seems reasonable. The staff is marvelous - special shout-out to my girl Nicole - and are more than happy to sneak you an extra coffee. I'll truly miss this place. If/when I'm back in Leeds, it'll be my first stop!

+ Trendy café in Leeds city centre + Very good selection of cakes Mrs. Atha's is a trendy café in Leeds city centre. Inside this small café, you are immediately greeted by the smell of coffee beans and a display of a number of delicious-looking cakes. The café has everything that a trendy café has, rustic wooden tables with uneven surfaces, blackboard with hand-written menu and the aforementioned cake display! Yes. I'm totally sold. Rather rare for these trendy cafes that pride themselves for their superior skill of coffee making and expensive haircuts, they have a very good selection of teas. As a non-coffee drinker, I always feel awkward when I order tea at these places that are clearly catered for coffee lovers. So it was comforting to see this café shows at least a gesture towards poor minority of people that I belong to. I ordered a masala chai tea and a slice of lemon/ berry cake. The cake was very tasty and refreshing. But the texture was a let down. It was very crumbly and hard to eat. The weird baby folk (imagine a folk the size of a tea spoon) they gave me didn't help either. When I stopped by at about 2pm, there was a little queue so I went out, did my chore and came back about 4-ish. It was still busy but not unbearably so.

    They have a Slayer!

As…read moresoon as you enter the modest downstairs area you can see the huge board of options laid out before you, and a list of 10 special named choices that I presume are their recommendations. As I entered the shop there was already a bit of a queue but it seemed to be swift moving and they had about four staff members on so it was all looking good. I opted for the mozzarella, basil pesto and tomato panini and asked for chorizo as an extra. It came to £4.10 with the added chorizo, which is a little pricier than expected, but still comes under the "lunch for under a fiver" bracket! Whilst I was waiting I noticed some rather intriguing milkshake drinks, so I'm thinking I may have to treat myself next time I'm in. The panini took about five minutes plus to arrive, which was not a problem as I had a nice seat to sit in whilst I waited. You can opt to eat in, upstairs and peruse the free wifi if so inclined, but on this occasion I wasn't stopping. The staff were lovely and friendly and the service was really swift given the volume of orders that were coming in. My sandwich was really delicious, a generous amount of melted mozzarella was the real highlight, but my only complaint was that the tomato made the bread a little too soggy to eat in places. Just something to consider for next time!

They pride themselves on using fresh, healthy ingredients to create unique sandwiches, and they succeed for the most part. You can order by phone, online or simply go in and pick your sarnie up. Or, if you've got too much time on your hands (like I did) go and eat your sandwich in the lounge area upstairs and take advantage of the free wifi. You'd think that such a place would perhaps be on the upper end of the pricing spectrum, but there are no such issues - the most you'll pay for a footlong sub (just one of the many choices of bread) is £3.50. One final point - though it brands itself as a fresh, healthy, classy sandwich shop, its best offering is undoubtedly the down-to-earth and shamelessly unhealthy cheese-dog. Mmm.

As I'd not been here in ages, we decided to seek out some delectable sustenance here, as that is precisely what I got my friends. I had heard tell these guys do a mean burger, and since I've been banging on about seeking out Leeds' best it seemed only fair to tackle that for lunch. Oh. My. Word. After an enticing wait the food arrived and what lay before me was some kind of demi-god, as far as patties go. A beautifully baked sesame seed bun, with all the fluffy, crispy, freshness you could hope for in a bread cake. The accoutrements included a wonderfully fresh bit of salad, perfectly melted cheddar, and a delightful home made piccalilli. The meat? Seasoned to perfection, juicier than I've known, and cooked like a dream. Slightly pink, like a real burger should be, and a right ruddy messy affair. I was in heaven. Of course, you know all about their award winning cupcakes by now, so I needn't wax lyrical about the white chocolate as raspberry nirvana that I polished off at home, but what you probably didn't know is that I've found a contender for one of Leeds' finest burgers. The outside of the shop is painted a sumptuous deep plum colour and the sign features gold, hand-painted lettering with a quaint feel. Inside the walls are covered in oh-so-vintage pink flocked wall paper...but to be honest that's not exactly what your eyes are drawn to with all the tasty treats on display! Anyone with a particular predilection for sweetmeats will be literally drooling all over the shop! The cupcakes cry 'EAT ME' with their generous helpings of many-coloured icing and array of flavours. There are also such delights as champagne truffles, as well as slightly less exciting (though very delicious I'm sure) savoury items including sandwiches and soups as well as tea and coffee. There is a lovely atmosphere at The Sunshine Bakery, with friendly, smiling staff, and the customers seeming very happy to be there and oh so close to their next cupcake fix! The choices range beyond the dullard standard, and they've no beef if you want to mix and match some ingredients. I admit to only having had a bite of one of their sandwiches, which at the time tasted amazing but this was at stupid o' clock in the morning with a rumbling tummy after a boozy night so I suspect most anything, especially containing melted cheese, would have tasted pretty good. The main thing that stood out for me was the customer service. There were a bunch of hyperactive drunken waxed-chested low cut t-shirted lads whooping and gallivanting around the limited space inside Challenge Sandwiches and generally exhibiting that notorious student lack of awareness of anything other than their own hilarity.
