Mama and I stumbled into John Mannion after perusing a few other tea room windows and noticing that they were far too crowded to squeeze into - school holidays, who'd have 'em?
I liked the atmosphere in John Mannion, all chalkboards and trays full of hunks of bread around the place, but overall I thought it was a bit of a meh experience (sorry previous Yelpers, I hope I don't drag the stars down too much for you!) There was a good choice of sandwiches but no real menu, only my beloved chalkboards; hard to read when there's a lady head infront of it and even harder when you're supposed to wear glasses but never do. I eventually opted for a ham & cheese sarnie because I was feeling simple. That and I dislike most sauces, which alot of the options here come with. The sarnie itself was lovely, big and chunky, with a sweet tomato/onion relish, and a dressed salad on the side. The bread was a real high point in that it was herby and garlicy, but, suprisingly, white - possibly there was an option for brown but it wasn't given. Given the wholesome nature of the place I would have considered this as standard, but maybe that's just me! The service was okay, staff seemed to be really good with children but lacking connection with adults, meaning we felt a bit left to the side at times as our plates were cleared quickly with little comment rather than the lengthy-in-comparison conversation about the meals at the table next door.
Desserts and cakes looked mouthwateringly good and I reckon they would've upped the star - shame we had other, wine based, plans in mind! read more
