Coming here for lunch was a great example of how local knowledge can be much more useful than any Yelp listing or Google search. I've searched and ranked and canvassed opinion for lunch spots in York many a time and this place either never came up or definitely wasn't top of the list. But a friend who lives in York brought us here and it was really great.
Odd observation: a lot of cafés in York seem to do this thing where they just have various types of salad and deli items that you can mix and match to make a plate. In my experience this isn't as common in Manchester. Or am I missing out on all the deli counter goodness, if so please tell me where it is! Because I love this way to eat: lots of different flavours and textures on one plate.
I had a fig and Stilton puff pastry tart which came with a green leaf salad and additionally I chose tomato & beetroot; fennel, pea & courgette; and broccoli & strawberry. I was v skeptical of broccoli & strawberry but with the natural sweetness of roasted broccoli it really worked! The whole plate came to something like £8 which I thought was excellent value. Part of the beauty of this for me was that I could imagine making it all at home, and yet I hadn't ever thought to make any of it, eg. my friend had a salad that contained very thin slivers of lemon peel that was possibly pickled or otherwise marinated. We both reacted along the lines of 'cool, this is something I can try at home now!'
Service was great, quick and really friendly. There are I think three branches meaning in a small walkable city like York you'll never be far away from one! read more
