It was about a 30-minute wait for a table and a fairly long wait for food, but it was all worth it. Tiny little place with abput 24 total seats, so larger parties are probably not a great idea. They do their best to turn tables, but diners, by and large, seem to linger. Rude, but that's people. The staff was very friendly and the food was great! We tried the Corn Fritters and then a special Asian Pork Belly Benedict... both excellent! Good coffee and tea and some nice-looking lattes, etc. Oh, and some great pastries and brownies! We needed a quick bite to eat before our train ride out of York. I saw this cute place and read some positive reviews. This review is for the cafe and not the full shop. The service was good. It was not very busy when we arrived at 9:00 am in a weekday. Inside is cozy and they have most of the items on display. The sourdough bread was very good and no complaints about my toastie. My espresso was a bit acidic for my taste but minor complaint. I liked that this was a local and independent shop. Pay first then sit and you can get items to go if you are in a hurry. A very good place in York and I wish we could have tried their larger other location with full menu. read more

Really enjoyed this quick breakfast spot. Service was quick and we were in/out of this location in under an hour. I ordered the latte and 3 cheese toastie. Everything I ordered was very good and would recommend you trying either items. The ambiance is casual with several people working in laptops while we enjoyed our breakfast. Super cute charming cafe. Tiny little flowers and decor is also charming. I noticed some art on the walls that appear to be for selling. They did some coffee art for us. You need to get flat white for the art. I also tried a desert which I dont know the name too. Breakfast dishes looked very delicious but we settled for coffee and desert only. My recent trip to York was, somewhat naively, during the peak of Christmas shopping so (naturally) it was rammed! Luckily, thanks to some research from my always organised mother, we made our way to Brew & Brownie. Set off from the main streets, it was busy but nothing like we'd seen at a number of chains and pubs along the way. Inside is well sized with lots of natural light and a delicious looking cake display by the window. There was a 10 minute wait for a table, as there was for most people; there's only a small 'waiting' area and you'll certainly get mixed up with people waiting to pay or order take-away coffee / cake, but the staff do a grand job of managing everyone with a smile (the essential accessory for surviving the festive period in hospitality!) It took a little while to get a menu but we were able to look at the special blackboards in the meantime, and it came not long after with that aforementioned smile and an apology for the wait. We decided to share - in classic mother daughter fashion - a halloumi & roasted vegetable sandwich and the 'eeh bah gum' small board, which consisted of a pork pie, roast ham, three types of cheese, piccalilli, chutney, some salad and bread. The board stayed firmly on my side of our table throughout and I think we both agreed that it was a perfectly put together combination of items. The chutney was especially delicious paired with smoky cheese and the roast ham, and the pork pie converted me instantly due to the focus on meat and pastry as opposed to jelly. The sandwich was really good, with plentiful fillings and served on focaccia, but sometimes you just want to pick & mix. A really nice spot for York which I'm sure will continue to thrive. Brew & Brownie was EXACTLY what we were looking for... a full breakfast place, with enough variety to please our family (me, my husband and two grown kids, 20 and 24) It was walking distance from our hotel ( Hotel Jorvik...another great recommendation ) and close to York Minster. The restaurant is really nicely decorated with a cozy ambience. Our waitress was lovely, and attentive. My husband ordered the full breakfast with "the works"! My son and I ordered the pancakes with bacon... 4 large pancakes with bacon on top, served with blueberries and syrup.. soooo delicious. It was a lot of food, but I shared with my daughter, who also thoroughly enjoyed the porridge. It was the perfect start to our day of walking around beautiful York! read more

I was looking for a place to grab a nice breakfast/brunch in York, and was so pleased to find Brew & Brownie a short stumble from the York Minster. This place gets crowded, so be prepared to wait a few minutes during peak hours. The breakfast/brunch options here range from eggs and toast variations to sandwiches and salads. Add to this the smorgasbord of delicious fresh pastry and you won't want for options. Happy to say we stopped by here twice during our visit to York. All in all I think we tried the savory muffins with tomato chutney, eggs, bacon (streaky! smoky!), smoked salmon, scones, croissants, chai, and a ham and cheese panini. They even served us off the brunch menu a bit early so we could get it takeaway and make our bus. Lovely staff, delicious food. Would be a regular if I lived nearby! read more

Definitely recommend a visit to anyone who lives in York or is visiting. I chanced upon this jewel when I was in York for business and I loved both the coffee and the breakfast there! Super delicious and fresh ingredients combined to a healthy morning treat. The coffee served is well balanced and fruity, not one of the bitter concoctions other places call coffee! The only downside is that the cafe doesn't open in time for me to catch breakfast there before work. Is that not a thing in York? I also wouldn't mind if they kept open a bit longer. I would have certainly come more often had I had the chance. read more

The pancakes here are among the best I've ever had. And I speak as an unshamedly 'I seek them here, I seek them there, I seek them everywhere' lover of pancakes. Warm and moist to the point of verging on slightly (but not) uncooked and subtly flavoured, I devoured them all too quickly. The coffee is good too, the staff friendly, the space warmly lit, the prices reasonable (just over £2 for a flat white I think, while the pancakes range from £6-£6.50) and they have free wifi. Loved it. I'd definitely suggest trying to get there juuuust before it opens - my husband and I went one Sunday and arrived about an hour before it opened. We went next door for a cup of coffee and, about 15 minutes after they opened, the place was full and there was a line to be seated. The pancakes were great - we both got them and we both thought they were fantastic - and the service was a bit harried but very nice (and who can blame them? the place was packed!) It's definitely one to plan to swing by for breakfast if you're in York. Next time I want to try the cakes - they looked fantastic. read more

It was a sunny blustery autumn Sunday, the type where the sun is shinning, the air feels crisp, your cheeks are slightly pink and the leaves are all shades of red and golden.... OK I am not a great story teller - just setting the scene about how I discovered Brew and Brownie. As I no longer work in town I very rarely have the chance to wander into new places and I am so happy I did so today. Brew and Brownie was there to give me an alternative for my coffee to go fix (by alternative I mean lets support independent people of York!). The place was packed and smelled delicious! They offer a selection of delicious looking food (think Swedish bakery style eatery for healthy and wholesome food) alongside some divine baked goods. The deco is cool without being characterless and offers seating on wooden tables with a cafe/baked good stand to the front and large windows to observe the world. Alas I was only in to grab a coffee and sit outside in the sun (there is no outdoor seating but it is conveniently close to the Museum Gardens!). The staff are very friendly and efficient despite the bustling of the place and the mocha I had was very yummy to the taste buds! Would certainly return here to try out some of those rolls I set my eyes on. You get the gist- we have to get to know each other a bit better! A productive Sunday all around me-thinks. read more

This place does great coffee centrally in York. The staff are friendly and and the cakes are good. When I'm working I'll gladly walk past lots of other places in the vicinity to get myself a coffee. The food is good and big portions, but you pay for them. I tend to limit myself to coffee here, and the occasional cake, but I come here first most of the time when I get back to York. read more
