This is the kinda coffee place I can get used too. Located in the light near the escalators for the vue cinema this place has just opened to rave reviews. I always make sure I have at least a pound in my pocket for my one true coffee vice the espresso. The staff are very welcoming and seem to know what I want before I walk into the door. Sadly at the moment they aren't exception card payment still waiting on BT but when that comes round this place will and should but the other coffee shop in the light out of business( a guy can dream cant he). They also do food and a plethora of drinks for your coffee and non-coffee needs. The food looks top notch and people have been raving about it on twitter. they also started doing a teach you Italian and drink some coffee night as of late. So for gods sake check em out they will blow you away with their customer service and coffees and try not to go downstairs to that over priced over marketed coffee store just slip away while your friends order that complicated drink you secretly make fun of them for getting and go get a relay cuppa upstairs. read more

I've walked past this place many a time but not had the opportunity to go in. Well it finally arrived last night when car failings meant we went to see a later showing at Vue. It's all open so good for people watching if you're on your own but you can go hide away if you want. They cleverly do espresso Wednesday which is two for one coffee, coinciding with Orange Wednesdays so generally a bargainess night. Prices are good even without the deal and food was very flavoursome. The staff were quirky but helpful and happy to hold off on making my second free coffee. Excellent stuff. First time visiting today - very nice coffee and great prices but could have been a bit warmer in my opinion. The rise and rise of quality independent coffee in Leeds means everyone is going to have a favourite, and mine is certainly La Bottega. If their Classica is darker and more Italian-inspired (and *sharp intake of breath* contains some robusta!), they always have a guest coffee on as well, which more often than not caters for the more artisanal, lighter-roasted, "third wave" end of things. Their espresso is consistently good, a reflection of the dedication they apply to dialing in their Sanremo machine each day. This dedication and variety extends to food as well; an ever-growing collection of pastries and cakes, the best sandwiches in town by far and a selection of cold drinks and teas extends along the counter. Go often enough and they'll remember your order, start recommending new menu items and suggest you attend one of their occasional evening events (often licenced and liable to involve prosecco and Aperol spritz...). You'll find yourself dropping in before going to the cinema for a quick espresso, calling in after work or before catching a train, dropping in on your way back into town after being away for a while... read more

Finally a cafe in Leeds that stays open late at night! If there's one thing that Leeds lacks it's late night cafes (not everyone wants to drink every night....). And finally a cafe that has not only has excellent coffee but great food (especially desserts). They also have some good deals if you know when to go (reduced sandwiches in the evening). And the service is always friendly and attentive. My only issue with the place is the atmosphere... I mean I love coffee shops and I wish more in Leeds were like this one. However, I like my coffee shops to be places where I can go sit and read my book for as long as I want, or have conversations with people without being constantly distracted by the people beside me. So while I'll choose this place first when I just want a coffee or something to eat, I'm more likely to go somewhere else for a conversation or to read my book. read more

For those who can't get enough of that magic Milanese stuff, fear not. The bad boys of hot Italian coffee, Leeds style, have a spanking new venue! Located a little more centrally, in The Light, La Bottega Milanese has off-sprung a brand new sister shop and it's bigger and just as best-est as the other. With its open front and gleaming gold lettering this new coffee house fits in seamlessly amongst the other outlets, yet stands proud to proffer the people of Leeds a taste of proper Italian coffee and gourmet sandwiches. With extra seats, and a super cool lay out, it has an array of minimalist tables at which to sup - solving the one critique one might have for their smaller counterpart. Win! In a flying visit I flew in to grab a latte before starting work last Saturday. The staff were fantastic, happy to banter and yet swift at service, which is exactly what you need when you're starting the day: caffeine, and quick, so you can rely on your refreshments being made at speed here. Parfait! And, of course, the coffee was just perfect. Strong, full of flavour and a pick-me-up like no other. I've left room to manoeuvere , simply as I've not yet eaten here, but I would be willing to bet on my return that the sandwiches will polish off the whole experience. Having never heard of this place until my introduction to Yelp I decided to give it a go. Now where coffee is concerned I am a little bit of a snob. I hate sour, bitter coffee that's been over roasted and burnt to a crisp. This was definitely not the case here. Located in the modern setting of The Light, La Bottega Milanese sits next to the escalators leading you up to Vue Cinema. A small unit where what you see is what you get with the serving area/food to the right and chairs to the left and front. As you walk in past the happy looking customers sipping their drinks the first thing that hits you is the increasingly attractive looking food. Salads, sandwiches, cakes, pastries, nibbles and more. All vivid in colour, all enticing me to another day of syn. The next thing that grabs you is the MASSIVE smile on the lady behind the counter serving. While I was there it never left her face. What a change to see a happy person serving instead of the usual bored looking people in 'other' places. After a small peruse I plumbed for my usual cappuccino (this is how I rate a coffee house) and 4 of the small pastini's - small little bite size pastries with different flavours and fillings. WOW, they where good. Not only was the cappuccino hot, smooth and perfectly formed but the pastini's where crisp, delicate and full of lip smacking, hip building, thigh grabbing flavour. Chocolate, almond, butter, sugar and vanilla cream. All perfect flavours and all perfect to accompany the wonderful coffee I was now drinking. So as time slipped by and I finished my drink I noticed that no-one in the building look unhappy, and why should they. This is a place I know I will be returning to, if not just for the pastini's but definitely to try the other amazing looking food. As I always do, I returned my empty cup back to the counter and low and behold I was greeted with another massive smile. This was a good day. So, I hear you ask, why have I given it 4 stars and not 5. I want to try the food. If it tastes as good as it looks then that score is 'Moving on up' as a certain Heather Small would say. read more

This is a lovely place to catch up with friends on an evening. Great coffee, great cakes, nice staff, and it stays open late. Cake really should be a 24/7 thing. Hopefully binge-caking will come to Leeds; I'd much prefer to hear blokes boasting at how many banoffee tarts they downed last night. It's also the only place I know in Leeds that does an Affogato. Take two things I really love - short intense espresso strong enough to launch an unmanned space probe, and Italian ice cream - and then do what no one expects; combine the two into a tiny cup shaped piece of heaven. It's a bit like the Pan's Labyrinth of coffees - a dark fairy-tale of a drink that only adults should ever see. I really like the open-air feel whilst perched on one of their tables (as you're basically sitting out in the Light). You can pretend you're on some busy Italian terrace surrounded by beautiful passers-by; even when the weather is distinctly 'Leeds' outside. Their dark chocolate cannoli is also highly recommended but tests even my sweet tooth when ordered alongside an Affogato (but the guilt passes eventually so don't let that stop you). read more

I'm not generally a coffee drinker, but the other day when walking past La Bottega Milanese I got the urge to pop in and order one, I don't know whether it was the airy open shop front or the sunny weather, something just told me I had to go in. Im glad I did as I can safely say that this was the finest cup of coffee I have every tasted. I went for a flat white to go, and for the next 5 minutes I savored every sip. I was in a bit of a rush on the day I called in for something for lunch so I didn't really appreciate the staff passing the time of day with other customers (flirting sounds so judgemental) and having problems remembering what I had ordered. I chose from a delicious looking display of sandwiches and went for porchetta and apple which was tasty but a little light on filling for my liking. because I was in a hurry I suppose I should be grateful that my latte was luke-warm as that meant I could down it in one. It was evident that they were training a new member of staff and I really don't have a problem with taking things a little slower whilst learning the ropes but I left wondering what excuse the other staff had for their tardy service. read more

Oh my giddy Aunt, how glad I am to have stumbled across this divine little eatery whilst shopping in Leeds today) As I wandered in twisting my face, trying to view the wares and prices and was met by a friendly young Lad who greeted me with a big smile and a "what can I tempt you with today?" As I quizzed him about this, that and the other, he patiently dealt with all my silly queries in a lovely manner. His knowledge of the offerings was great and he helped to reach my decision. My choice was the lasagne with salad and it was truly fantastico!, really top notch stuff. The portion was just right for a small lunch and was reasonably priced. The Staff changed over as I dined and the incoming Lady smiled and greeted all the Diners in a relaxed and personable way. There was a fine selection of Italian cold drinks, very special types of real Italian favourites I hasten to add(after making enquiries) I sampled a couple and they were divine, especially the Amaretto type soft drink. The standard of food, refreshments and the way Customers are treated like old Friends re affirms my conviction that this place is outstanding and right up my Street (I wish) I will certainly be back. My favourite coffee place in Leeds. I love the décor (grey! Subway tiles! Swirly light bulbs!), it's SUCH a lovely place but also, the coffee is awesome! Especially accompanied by a sneaky chocolate pasticcini. (If you've never had one, try one at your peril - so addictive!) The service is excellent, for some reason I usually end up there in happy hour by accident, meaning the drinks are cheap, but the prices are pretty good anyway. Other than the pasticcini I've not tried the food but both the savoury and sweet food available looks fantastic - trying some lunch is next on my list so I'll do an update then! My only gripe about indie coffee places is they don't tend to do big coffees, (and sometimes I just need a massive coffee!) however I would chose a regular from La Bottega over a large from a chain 99.9% of the time anyway. My initial impression of Leeds as a coffee wilderness populated only by the ubiquitous Starbucks et al is proving to be far from correct. My coffee at La Bodega today was well extremely well made and the accompanying toasted sandwich was equally delicious. The only downside is its location in The Light which makes La Bodega feel a bit soulless. However, when you are making coffee this well this hardly matters. read more

I've been a fan of this place from the real get-go when a tiny little La Bottega Milanese first ventured out into The Calls. Room for two members of staff and if there was 4 customers it was very 'cosy'.....and I'm sure I was one of the very first customers, things have certainly taken off for this establishment but I do have to say that the intimacy of the tiny espresso bar has been lost and for me I think that was definitely part of the draw. I have been to the Light branch a number of times, and 'yes' I think that the coffee is of the same standard, and the range of food has definitely increased but if I was able to turn the clock back and revisit the original Calls bar then that is exactly what I would do...... read more

I can't get enough of this place! Staff are pretty much always really friendly and willing to help. We arrived 10 mins before closing a few nights ago but they were happy to serve us. Their coffee is DELICIOUS. It's not bitter at all, and although it's only 1 shot so not very strong, I really haven't had a nicer coffee in Leeds yet! Their food is yummy- I can definitely vouch for the arancini and the aubergine parmigiana, both of which come with a side salad. Tasty although not necessarily unforgettable enough for me to come back here just for the food. All their cakes are nice (I've probably tried at least half of them haha), and my friends and I love getting the small pastries filled with Nutella-type chocolate (only 60p). They are delicious dipped into coffee! Coffee-wise, the latte, cappuccino and Nutella espresso are AMAZING and if you are looking for something caffeine-free, the chai latte is nicely spiced & not too sweet like some other ones made with syrups. You won't find a caramel latte or any type of super sweet coffees that are popular in other coffee chains, but you will find authentic Italian coffee that will keep you coming back over and over again!
