Starbucks, you have the coffees and espressos. You got your seasonal drinks down with ease. I come here for the easy location to meet with friends. If I'm feeling lucky I get a flavored latte with a plant milk. Otherwise I stick with something iced. (I'm always skeptical if they care about ppl who have milk intolerances/allergies here. Especially with hot drinks.) During COVID19: ok spot to enjoy a drink early morning. They open at 5:30! Got here at 6:30am and no one was here. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. Masks were not stated to be required but every patron walks in with a mask. Des Moines as a city has a mask mandate indoor though. My friend and I were the only ones inside enjoying drinks for 1 hour till people started pouring in. Slow service. We were the firsts ones inside at 6:30. One car in the drive through but we waited 25 min for our drinks... What in the world??!! Everyone after us only waited a couple minutes. Would visit again if it is the last resort for coffee. It's a very busy place often with long lines. to be fair to them I think they're having a difficult time keeping good experienced baristas which slows them down. it may be a symptom of the actual company or it could be just a difficulty in getting good baristas. I've been there a few times usually it's pretty simple when you just ask for a black dark roast if they have it, but sometimes I want to dry cappuccino and I had a difficulty trying to explain to someone what that actually meant. I will say after I did explain it to them they got it. Anyway if you go in there with reasonable expectations it's not an independently owned coffee shop and they're usually busy you should be okay. read more

I went to get a coffee and only had a $100 bill. I know it can be inconvenient but I was omw to work and didn't have time to make extra stops to find someone to break it. Money is money. But the worker was very passive aggressive and said she would have to count the drawers all night long now because of my bill. Very unprofessional and I don't believe $100 makes you stay late. Very unfortunate she acted this way, I like to leave nice tips especially nearing the holidays. I'll just have to go elsewhere. Customer service isn't what it once was. read more

The barista had really strong German accent and I literally don't understand a single word she said. This place was really crowded on a Sunday morning. I love the consistency of the coffee and usually the staff working at Bucks is 2nd to none.. They also keep their locations clean and nice.. This trip to Bucks was a little unfortunate! First off it was busy I get it, but there was also like 5 people working, on New Years Eve mid afternoon. First off, the gentleman working the register was kinda oblivious to us walking in. I was like hey hows it going? and Still kinda a blank face. So made my order, and it was a Venti Soy Coffee FRAP.. Now mind you this is 5 dollar drink... Other customers while I was there did not get their orders correct and there was a coffee just sitting on the counter the whole time I was there, most likely another mess up... Anyway, my 11 month old son happened to knock over my Venti Frap onto the floor after I had 2 sips.. This made a giant mess... So a gal sitting at the counter doing homework tells the employees you have a spill.. No one really did anything so I go up and ask if I can get a towel to clean up the mess.. And they were like will get to it.. I was like Ok.. So for over 5 minutes I watch the Frap quickly melting making an even bigger mess. Finally someone comes out to clean it.. I thank them and tell them I'm sorry for the mess. Now I was not expecting a replacement coffee, or even an acknowledgment that I was sorry and offered to clean it up.. But an offer of a replacement coffee probably would have been good customer service.. That along with the other mess ups and lack of good customer service while I was there makes me give this one a 2 stars... Even though my two sips of Frap were delicious! read more

Unbelievably disorganized. Ordered two drinks, one nitro sweet cream and one basic iced coffee. Got the nitro in about two minutes, and waited another 10 minutes for the ice coffee, only to finally have to ask the cashier. She poured it within 30 seconds. Had a great experience here the other day! I am not a fan of starbs cold brew just bc it's soooo bitter, but I was trying to be healthy so I ordered it and had them add some almond milk. To me it was super bitter so I asked Robert an employee to add more and he was super sweet and even asked if I wanted a different drink and that he could make me a different one! I didn't and just got more almond milk but people can be snotty about it sometimes and I appreciated him understanding and being awesome with my picky self! read more

I go to this Starbucks to study now and then and 60% of the time they mess up the drink somehow. For instance, I ordered a venti pink drink and it was filled with a huge chunk of ice so I barely got any of the drink in the end. Another time, I ordered a venti quad iced caramel macchiato and I got milk basically, even though my drink was close to $6. There were COUNTLESS times that my drink was given to me with the drink smeared on the outside of the cup and they didn't even bother to wipe it up. For buying one drink for about $5 each time, I'd expect better quality. I wouldn't recommend this Starbucks location. The only benefit is that it's the closest one to the Des Moines colleges. read more

As other reviewers have said, this location just completed a renovation which added much more seating! My only complaint is the lack of lighting at the bar type seating when it is dark out. Makes it hard to study, but the staff is always very friendly! read more

I'm not a huge coffee fan but I do love the sugar or free or "skinny" iced vanilla lattes with soy milk. I've tried it at other places like Friedrichs and Smokey Row and it just doesn't taste quite as good. I see lots of people that use the free wifi for studying or meetings although I use drive thru pretty exclusively. Kathy is always there to greet us (it's usually my two year old and myself) and she is so friendly. read more

The Starbucks Coffeeshop at 3830 Merle Hay Road in Des Moines had its grand re-opening today after completion of the inside remodeling. All of the furniture is new. There is more seating for customers. There are several long tables which can be shared by customers as desk space. There are many electrical outlets for customers to recharge laptop batteries and smartphones. The showcase for the retail sale of one pound bags of coffee beans and coffee mugs has been reduced to a only a small space directly inside the front door. New white wall tile and new fixtures have been installed in the bathrooms. The baristas have been trained to remember customers names and remember what they like to order every morning. Also, if you have a Starbuck's receipt from a purchase that morning, then you can get a drink that same afternoon for a reduced price or any bakery item for $1 less. I think Starbucks has a very carefully thought out business plan. read more

I had a drink at the one in Hy-Vee on S.E. 14th and Park Ave. The staff was rude. The drink was supposed to be cold but it was luke warm. It taste like they made it earlier and just handed it off to me. Never waste my money there again. read more

I ordered a flat white via drive thru at this location and it was totally inconsistent from all the flat whites I've ordered at any other starbucks between the west coast and midwest. Im probably going to go out on a limb and say this location cares more about pushing out more volume versus consistency. I felt like the girl at the window was less than half-engaged at taking drive thru orders and inputting into the system; the baristas that make the drinks also failed to keep the recipes consistent as mentioned above - so overall, I'd say the entire team/staff here need to pull it together and step it up. Honestly, despite the inconvenience of having to park my car, Id rather go an extra 200 feet and purchase my drink at the Target Starbucks than at this location. read more

Went here because I had a free drink to redeem. As I parked I saw it was quite busy. I got an iced venti white mocha with cinnamon dolce and a bacon Gouda sandwich. The drink was out pretty fast, and I waited a few more mins for my sandwich. It didn't come out so I went up to the counter. The lady making all the drinks asked if I was waiting on something so I said "my bacon Gouda sandwich". Waited maybe 10 to 15 mins total for it, for it to be placed in front of me on the bar. Didn't really get an apology, or anything in fact. I understand that it was busy, but at least apologize for forgetting half of an order. I don't think I'll be going back to this Starbucks. It sucks since this one is 6 minutes from my house. I'd rather drive 17 minutes to another one for better service. read more

It's bad enough that this town has so few options for coffee that we get funneled through a Starbucks, but this particular location has to be the worst one I've endured. I regularly spend 15+ minutes waiting in the drive thru (with 5 cars at most in front of me). Most of the staff have no clue about customer service - and a couple are a borderline inappropriate image for Starbucks (or any company). I treat myself to Starbucks every other Friday. I usually hit up the one on 86th but that one is right off the interstate and if you don't hit it just right it is crazy busy. I get to this Starbucks around 6:25am and am usually able to get in line and have my drink within 2 minutes! Love this, and they always get my drink order right without much question especially when I'm making a bunch of substititions. Great service & Great Coffee! :) read more

I recently visited this location a few times in the course of a week. It's the first starbucks with a drive-thru that I've ever been to. I went inside the store. The drive-thru really ruins the experience inside of the store. The drive-thru window and activity is completely visible, and all the employees (partners) are wearing head-sets - so you know they aren't fully listening to you. It's like any fast food restaurant - no longer a special experience. Also - I ordered warm food each time, and noted that my food was placed lower in the queue than the drive-thru food - so I ended up waiting much longer for warm food than I would at other locations. read more
