Strata Coffee Bar - Lavender Latte

Located…read morenear the Medi Park area was Strata Coffee Bar, a catch all spot that functions as a coffee shop, bar, and brunch location. When I walked in, the place was absolutely packed with TTUHSC or TTU Vet Med students who were celebrating finishing their final classes for the year. It was quite busy with a large line in front of me, and since I was staying for a while, I was not in a rush. I ordered a lavender latte, and after waiting just over 15 minutes behind the gaggle of people who ordered before me, my hot beverage was ready. I really liked the cup they served it in. It had a cute mountain gradient with their logo on top. The coffee itself was pretty good. It was not anything groundbreaking, but I enjoyed it for what it was. Having to briefly hop on a call with my boss, I went out to their small outdoor patio and took the call. It was also a pretty decent spot for getting some work done. They serve a ton of different options, and it is probably a popular stop for people in the surrounding medical district to get a quick coffee boost. There were also plenty of people drinking beers and mimosas when I came in, celebrating their semester coming to a close at 9:30 in the morning, so good for them. You love a catch all spot. I have just recently been getting into brewing loose teas instead of tea bags and was delighted…read morewhen I found there was a place in Amarillo I could purchase loose tea although I know it is not the only place. They definitely had the largest selection though. The girl who was working there was very knowledgeable about all their various teas and I learned a lot that I hadn't previously learned from watching YouTube videos and passed on a little bit of information back. I was going to limit myself to $20 but ended up spending $50 because I found so many items that looked interesting, plus wanting to order a drink there to try out. The place is very nicely laid out and the teas are sold by the ounce. I like that because I could buy a little bit of this and a little bit of that to try out and then I can always go back to get more if I like one better than the others. The atmosphere was very comfortable and welcoming. If you don't want to buy loose teas they have drinks available you can buy, everything from your basic flavored teas you can pour yourself in the back room out of standard dispensers to specialty teas using the loose teas they offer for sale. The place is very easy to find and visible from the street. If you need a landmark it is across the street from Dickey's Barbecue and The Lazy Gator shopping strip. There is parking available right in front. The only reason I took off one star was because I got home and found that there was no receipt in my bags. Most places if they aren't planning on giving you a receipt will ask you if you want one and I always say yes please. If I'm going to spend that much money in a store I'd like to have a receipt to compare against my credit card bill and remind me how much each purchase was. It may be the girl just forgot because we were talking so much or they may not be in the habit of asking. Later I found I had received an email with the information but I'm old school and would rather have a piece of paper I can look at. If you want to break away from Lipton tea bags and try something special, check out their large selection! In fact, I found teas here that I didn't find at Natural Grocers and Market Street and there isn't a blessed tea bag in the store. Oh, and they also have tea making utensils, pots, cups, travel cups, DIY tea bags and strainers you can put the loose tea into and a few more exotic Tea Brewers & dispensers, even some of those honey sticks that you can put in your tea to stir it around and sweeten it at the same time.

Ever since my first adventure to Amarillo, I have made a point to visit Palace Coffee Co. This place has always been there for me, and I have always thought they do a pretty bang-up job. I had not been back to Amarillo in a few years. After graduating college, there was not much reason to make the trip until I started dating my girlfriend, whose family lives in Amarillo. Wanting to be present and involved with her family meant making the drive up from Austin, a 7+ hour trek that feels like one for the history books. Since I was back in town, revisiting Palace felt like an easy decision. They have never done me wrong. I have always liked this café. It has great energy, solid music, and a clean space. The darker, almost matte black aesthetic was comforting back when I was still in school and visiting Amarillo. I had gotten work done here before, so while working remotely during this trip, Palace felt like the right place to be productive. We arrived on a Wednesday morning. I logged onto the Wi-Fi, plugged into one of their outlets, and got to work. My girlfriend was there finishing up some schoolwork for Texas Tech, so it was shaping up to be a productive morning. When we ordered, she got a cappuccino with chocolate, and I ordered a lavender latte with oat milk. I also grabbed one of their cinnamon twists for breakfast. Not long after, our drinks were brought to our table. From where we were sitting, we could see the roasting, packaging, and preparation of coffee for distribution in the back, which was a really cool view. There was also a new barista being trained on different coffee methods, which was nice to see. As for my lavender oat milk latte, it was good. I genuinely think Palace makes some of the best lattes in Amarillo, and I still have not found another place in town that tops them. That said, I am not sure if it was nostalgia or just an off day, but it was not quite as good as I remembered. The espresso did not feel as strong or forward as usual. It was not bad at all, and they still did a great job, but I remember it being more comparable to some of my favorite coffee shops across Texas. This time, it felt just a step below that memory. That said, it was still very good, and it could have easily been an off day or my own palate. The cinnamon twist was big, filling, and excellent. I liked it, my girlfriend liked it, and everyone was happy. Palace clearly knows what they are doing and how to create a great experience alongside a great latte. For that reason alone, it remains a must-stop when visiting Amarillo. RIYL: coffee in the Yellow City

I always find it interesting how many medium sized cities have a localized coffee chain that is so deeply rooted in the community. In Round Rock, it is Lamppost. In Amarillo, it is Roasters. There are quite a few Roasters locations in Amarillo, but the true OG is located off Georgia Street. I got there around 8:30 in the morning and it was capital B busy. Every table except one was occupied and the drive thru was wrapping around the building. By the time I got inside, I only had a short wait before ordering. I ordered a simple vanilla latte with oat milk in a medium size, along with a pumpkin spice muffin. For how busy it was, I was expecting to wait a while, but they churned drinks out pretty quickly. The barista even signaled to me to come grab the drinks for my girlfriend and me because I did not believe they had been made that fast. The coffee itself was pretty good. It leans on the sweeter side and is more focused on flavor than being espresso forward. It is clear why this place is such a staple in Amarillo. I also really liked that they had coffee sleeves that looked like Christmas sweaters and flannels for the season. It was a cute touch. It is a cute space and feels pretty traditional. One random thing I noticed was the pictures of Ronald Reagan on the walls. I do not know the reason or if it is some sort of long running joke, but it exists, along with books about Reagan scattered around the shop. There is only one single use bathroom, so on a busy morning it can take a bit if you need to use it. Every day, Roasters offers a coffee of the day on drip. I went to another location later in the week and tried it there as well, and it was good too. I think Roasters is a great option for coffee in the area and proves why it has been a staple for Amarillo residents since the 1990s. Regardless of the Reaganomics for whatever reason, Roasters can trickle down some coffee. RIYL: coffee and pictures of Ronald Reagan
